I have mixed feelings, but now's a good time to give TF2 a shot if you've never played it before.

As long as you can still craft the majority of the items and they aren't being douchebags and forcing us to buy them, then I'm sort of OK with it...just a little pissed that I paid for it a while back...and that there's still no Meet the PYRO VIDEO!!!!

All the items are still available as crafting items and random pickups & achievement rewards.

I paid $20 bucks for this, and now its free?!?!?! wtf, I want my fucking money back. And I'm not the only one.

I demand $20 in shop credit.

I sort of thought the same thing, but this actually happened back when TF2 was lowered to 5 bucks.

The cost of the "premium" game hasn't changed, since you have to put a minimum of $5 in your Steam wallet to use it. Either way, you're shelling out $5 to play with a "premium" account.

Non "Premium" players such as me (once I manage to get the content downloaded, anyway) have less perks, as seen in the FAQ. If you've payed for TF2, you get all the stuff. Not that it matters. Look at it this way, though; when Valve made Portal free, nobody complained. Why complain now?

I played TF2 so much I would have spent 100 dollars on it. Easily.

It's cool that it's free now. Stop complaining.

Yeah, I really don't see what the big deal is.
I mean, maybe if you bought TF2 the day before it became free or something - that'd be a bitch, but most people got it as part of the Orange Box which was what, £35 for 5 of the best games that year? That's £10 cheaper than one copy of Black Ops. And look at Modern warfare 3 - it's STILL going to be £45 and will charge a subscription fee to play online.

You have no right to be angry at Valve for making their games free when companies like Activision are fucking up the entire market - charging £10 for 3 maps and getting away with it? Shocking.

Be happy that a dying game (in terms of player numbers) is going to get a massive population boost, and that the micro-transactions will continue to support mappers and modellers just like you.

Portal was free for THREE DAYS, not everybody got that for free.
You still have to pay for Portal now.

Although, it'd be great if valve made Portal completely free-to-play as well, it could definitely stand out as one of those 'free-to-play indie games' we seem to be getting lately, even if it isn't really indie.

The non-neoclassical business model of a larger entity paying for a smaller entity seems to be what's happening. Like a casino's extra revenue paying for an animal shelter or a free clinic.

Valve likely makes enough money from other things to do this. Adding micro-transactions in the game to get items also gains revenue from existing players who had already spent the money in the first place. The revenue from that likely covers the cost to buy the game. Also the micro-transactions are continuous and not one-time deals. If the problem of complaining is large enough, they will deal with it appropriately.

I paid for the game... four years ago. I got hundreds of hours out of it. I'm estatic that it's free, now all of my friends can join me!

The only downside is I'll probably be getting more strangers sending me messages offering to buy my Searing Plasma Prancer's Pride.

You can still earn them, but if you're too impatient to wait you can also buy them to get them quicker if you so chose.

That's how it works I believe but I don't play TF2, but that should still be roughly how it works.

Yup, that's the way she goes. And if you buy so much as a hat, I'm pretty sure you get the "Premium" (read: Pre-Update style item management) Account.

For all those having a umad over this. Would you rather have waited all this time to get it for free? Opportunities abounded to get Team Fortress 2 for a STEAL. One of the biggest ones being the orange box itself.

Most of the people complaining aren't really considering that they paid for all the time they played before it went free, from what I can see.

And for lots of players, that time came at a major bargain because they played for hundreds of hours. That's a steal.

Yeah, the way I see it, there really is nothing valid to complain about. We also do get premium accounts on top of it. And a hat or something I think. (Whoop dee doo. But I'm just saying.)

The hat is a jip. It's just a Brodie helmet. They could have at least put a LITTLE effort into it.

For those of us with no salaries and mountainloads of patience, this is certainly a good thing.

I feel like the amount of patience is directly proportional to salaries.

All I can say is, glad I didn't buy it back then.

If you don't care about all the stupid crafting/trading thing, there is absolutely no reason to ever pay for a "premium" TF2 account. The only items that you will miss out on if you don't pay for them on the store are the ones that do nothing!

This is great, because the people who waste their money on hats and other rubbish are allowing the actual game and subsequent updates to be released for free. This is far better than Activision's "$5 per map" way of ripping everyone off.

And to people who are complaining and want their money back: Screw you. You do not deserve ANY compensation whatsoever. You paid for a game FOUR YEARS AGO. If you didn't get your 20 bucks worth out of it in four years, then why do you even care now? It's like wanting your money back after a game is released to the public domain 60 years after release.
