Would anyone be interested in mapping your house, and at the end we can arrange them on a street, i.e. urby may be neighbors with tetsu0?

If y, i would be willing to accept entries from any hl/hl2 engine game, and port them to csgo classic casual map.

Note: to people who may live in a tenament building, it makes it a bit more difficualt, but i would off you two suggestions: 1. map the interior of your home and then make up an exterior or just map the whole building =P

Anyone interested post your work and/or ideas for this here, and when we get enough houses or enough time has passed, i'd volunteer to combine them to a TWHL neighborhood =)

Damn, looks like I need to get CS:GO.
And I'd be up for this. I once mapped out my kitchen accurately, after taking a load of measurements. I measured a few other rooms too, I'll have to try and find the paper where I took it all down.
How accurate would it have to be? If I am to do it like that, I won't be done for quite some time. College takes up all of my weekday time, and I have a big house unfortunately.

that's great tjb, but remember, you do not need csgo to participate ;)

As far as accuracy goes, it's really up you, and i would continue that thought to say you don't have to build your actual home if you don't want to; you may choose another whichever residence you like, or the "perfect" home in your head =)

I prefer mapping things, especially real-world things as accurately as i can, but keep in mind in you use hammer inches/centimeters, your gonna have to re scale it up and out so it looks/feels right in the game. (you can get by using hammer units as a start, but corridors for example will be very cramped)

I started playing with my entry, should this coop project get off the ground:

It's an actual house i used to live in, where the bottom level was originally an old milk house, which was convereted 2 a two-car garage and workshop, and 3 floors above were added: living area, Master Bedrooom, and a loft/attic, which had it's own shower and small bath.

Well made...at least from the outside :)

As for mine...I am up to nowhere with it. >_<

Dude! Sounds like an awesome idea!
are we mapping the outsides or the insides?

Inside or out is great, BUT in any event i would say to those who plan to build the inside, I'd highly recommend building the exterior first, and only start hollowing* after it is proportionally correct.

*I don't mean using hollow tool! =P

Another idea i had to add to this, was one of those old strip motels converted into monthly rental apts, and let people claim a room to decorate should they didn't want to build the whole house. (could do the same thing with a fancy condominium)

Captain Terror pls. Every time you make one of these community projects you just forget about it :P

name one I "forgot" about. I only ever stop participating when there is no interest left from the community. I can't do it by myself and it still be a community project, yes?

also it's funny you mention "forgetting", since you and stokens were supposed to design layout for teem mapping 2, and you didn't do shit. :P

You mean the project that had pretty much no updates for over a month, the one where I wasn't told to do anything and eventually everyone gave up on it?

I'm sorry but I have too agree. CT has, on multiple occasions attempted to get the community busy and more often than not, nobody has given a fuck.

I remember getting excited about the TWHL themed mapping contest but stopped working on it when I realised nobody else was. :(

I didn't forget about it, I was just unable to continue. I was mapping on my old laptop, then my brother had me lend him the screen so he could get files off his laptop (which had a broken screen). He still hasn't given it back.
I was so pleased with that map too, JeffMOD had an ant colony called 'Colony 42', Soup Miner had a minecraft mine attached to his room that had a minecraft chest full of soup, you know, little puns like that. You and Archie had a secret tunnel connecting your rooms, Skals and Blitzkrieg shared a room after their tryst in the TWHL Big Brother House. There was a secret room where the Big Brother Gnome watched you through hidden cameras, plotting his revenge.
These were meant to be things the player would have to discover for themselves, but by the looks of it I'll never get to release the map. :(

Also for this one I hope to create an entry, but I have a big house that was built by drunk builders who have never heard of the 90 degree angle, so to do it accurately would be quite complex. So while I would like to, I am afraid I cannot commit to the project as of yet. Perhaps I will do so eventually. :

Better organization maybe?
Rewards are nice, but it needs to be organized.

Plus, not all have CS GO. Im still stuck at 1.6 :)

Captain T has awesome compo ideas that i love to look at, bud sadly cant participate.
And also lets not forget that some times we can be busy with real life activities and such.

Dude, i EVEN said i would be willing to port anyone's map from any goldsource or source-based game to CSGO, and people still don't have fucks to give; it doesn't matter everyone has an excuse..

A Big yes on the need for better organization though. The Cstriker literally saved the first team mapping project by bitching about a lack of said organization(and then i re-did the rules and everybody jumped on board), and since then, it try to make them as clean cut and organized as possible ;)

And totally yeah don't get me wrong, i totally understand RL gets in the way....

yes read the first post all the way through ;)

For textures just include your jpgs/png/whatever, and i'll convert them. Same rules apply as gs, or must be 1x1 or 1x2 ratio in size and divisible by 16(e.g. 256x256, or 256x512).

As far as transparency goes, if you include an alpha layer let me know so i can include that in the vmt.

I've tried making my own textures at least 3 times and I've failed to get the colors as realistic as possible. Everything looked like a funny cartoon. That's why I am using only stock content if you guys have ever noticed that... :crowbar:

I'm listening urby, now explain me normal maps and and that other vmt hoodoo!

bojidar4oto: ya, making something realistic from scratch is ridiculously tedius, so you better off using cgtextures as your base.

Another tedious, but kind of intriguing way to make your textures from scratch would be to make the said texture from brushwork, light it, and THEN in the game use a orthographic(straight-down) screenie of it as your base.

Do you have a Tardis across the street?

What I'd like to know is how would different urban environments blend in this project. What I mean is, houses in some neighbourhoods (possibly like Captain T's) are several metres apart from each other, whilst in other neighbourhoods (i.e Manhattan) there is no such space in between buildings and their facades line up forming a (mostly) continuous and uninterrupted surface. Or people that live in apartment buildings.
Posted 12 years ago2012-12-17 01:36:42 UTC Post #311608
yup it's a tardis that i enclosed a t spawn in for testing, so i'm not getting shot while playtesting. (i since learned you can just type bot_quota 0) =P

you bring up a good question. the answer is i will be responsible for blending all the homes and environments together, but i don't expect it will be too hard, i.e., if someone builds a skyscraper, i'll build a little city for it to blend into, and place like urban stuff there.

if somebody lives in an apartment building, they are free to just build their flat or their whole building, it's simply up to the user. (in the case they just built their flat, i'd build the exterior of the building to complete it)

Source accepts MUCH bigger environments, so i'm not worried about space or resources being an issue ;)

I have a house ive made a while ago. i'll tidy it up and ship it out.
The textures are stock, but im short on time due to finals and RL.
Feel free to slap any siding or wood texture you want onto the house.
