Someone suggested I start a thread for everyone to post the stuff they've been drawing to get feedback or just to show off.

So I started a thread for everyone to post the stuff they've been drawing to get feedback or just to show off.

I say it don't matter whether or not it's mapping related, but if it is, naught wrong wit' that.

So go ahead, whatcha been drawing?

Myself, I've been spending the wee hours of the past handful of days drawing this.

link

This is pretty much the first thing I've ever drawn to a standard I was willing to put up anywhere. That's also why it's such a stock pose, I was just testing the drawing waters.
I realised while drawing this that despite me not being into the genre of anime/mango, I really don't mind the style; it strikes a fantastic balance between cartoon and realism. At least, for me, anyway.

Nicely done, Scotch!

I've never been able to draw people/figures and admire people who can! I will try to sketch something in pencil/ink soonish, and post it up :)

Edit
Tried and failed, and den tried to pen-in all the mistakes.. The perspective is better than I'm usually able to pull off, so that's one thing :P

Scotch. That's pretty good! Eerily similar to a girl I once dated...
CT, reminds me of Sin City. Some of the ink mark looks like blood spatter :)

Dankeschon!

I'm working on the next one in the set, and need some heads up on anything that looks particularly wrong about it. http://sta.sh/01dwg3l0ihm8

(Her left hand isn't behind her, I just haven't drawn it yet. Same goes for hair, clothes and any other details. She'll be wearing heels, hence the tip-toe look.)

EDIT: Why does this post keep becoming empty when I edit it?! That's really annoying! EDIT 2: Seems trying to put in the o with an umlaut that dankeschon should have was causing it. Swear that never used to be a problem.

Body type, jaw lines, part in the hair. Wild.

Heh, I guess I can see the similarities. Frankly, good! If it's comparable to actual people, I feel like I did I really good job :D
Though if her name is Jessie (or Jessica), that's starting to get a bit freaky :P

Feedback, please? It got a bunch of views but no-one offered anything up. Just some general "her ___ looks too big" or "her ___ doesn't look quite right" -style responses would be very helpful before I try and move further with it.

Her right (our left) thigh seems to go behind her left leg at too low a point. For that perspective to work, her left leg would have to be quite far in front of her right, and not so straight on. That thigh angle is more like if we were looking towards her left shoulder rather than straight on.

Ah, this is true! I knew something wasn't right there, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Dankeschon!

Am I right in thinking it doesn't look very much like she's clicked her fingers? I was looking at my own hand and working from that, but it still doesn't look right. Suggestions? (At the moment I'm thinking raise her pinky a tad, curve her index inward a little and maybe move the thumb outwards.)

There we are. I don't like the style as much, almost exclusively because of the less clean look the way I did the lineart gives. So I won't be doing it that way again, and go back to the way I did it in the first one. A bestie said this looks somewhat Disney. I've never been that into Disney myself, so it didn't help its case :P

@Rim: That's quite the repository you have there.

I personally think the hands and legs are too manly. Perhaps the legs are not as womanly curvy as they could be. Still probably better than I could have done myself, though.
Posted 10 years ago2014-07-17 03:37:30 UTC Post #320381
Same, I can't draw figures, so I don't feel qualified to judge them... The face pose from your original post somewhat reminds me of the android number 18 from DBZ, which is good ;)

I do agree with Stu that the legs should be a little more streamlined on this second one(or mabye just reducing the size of the ankles/feet a little would do the trick) :)

It didn't seem that wrong to me, but even Mom's first reaction was negative towards the legs.

Looks like I'll have to put a little more work into the lower thirds from now on. I won't argue with the observations, I'm not great with legs or feet yet :zonked:

It was intentional to make the legs a bit manly, as this ain't just some random woman I'm sticking to. Just a bit though, and judging by reactions, I think I overshot that slightly >.<

Just got myself a tablet, which'll make things a lot easier. (Actually a friends, who was selling it at a respectable price.) Created quick doodle to test it out: link Given how much of a pain such "quick doodles" were with a mouse, I'm somewhat taken aback by how much better the tablet is at this.

Time to get back into it! (After I have a crack at some of the ideas I've been getting for the Colours Minicomp, that is :P )

I was under the impression that there were some TWHLers who drew a lot; the lack of activity ITT suggests otherwise?

I've not been drawing long, but so far I can suggest (apart from the above "Practice", which goes without saying):
Comfort - if you're uncomfortable, you won't enjoy it at all, just like anything else. Good lighting, so your eyes are comfortable. Not a problem with digital art, o' course. Physical comfort; be where you can get nice and relaxed. A comfy chair, perhaps a bed if you're able. And, y'know, temperature, and shit. You know what comfort is.
Music - to distract you a tad. I find silence can get you to be overly critical about what you're doing, not to mention more irritable whenever you fuck up (and if you're new like me, you'll fuck up a lot, just like any new skill). Find a good OST or something that gives plenty of background music. Having to stop every now and then to change music ruins flow. I've been sticking to this myself, and yes, I'll take any opportunity to push Castlevania.
Oh, and if you want to draw, don't give up. Simple as that. I've tried getting into drawing several times over the past 6 or so years, and am only now just starting to have some success, almost certainly just because I didn't stick with it enough the first times round.

I used to draw when I was a bit younger, but I started getting irritated because I couldn't break from the childish, anime-esque style that I somehow developed, or do anything other than straight-on faces. I wanted to do environment art, but could never get perspective down. You guys are making me jelly. :P

Though now I'm tempted to try again and see what happens.

Pro Tip

My eyes see brown as the most comfortable color to look at. I color my background a nice soft 60% brown then draw on top of that. Experiment to see what colors are pleasant to look at and use that. If you use white and draw with black, you can hurt your eyes.

Colors between 40% and 60% brightness range work best, but everyone is individual.

I draw upwards of 8-10 hours a every day and have been for many years. Trust me on this one.

Glad I could help

Uni and sickness have been severely impacting my desire to draw, and I know me; if I don't try to keep it alive, I will not get it back so easily. So smacked this one out just now. link Went for a sort of self-portrait, given that this is more or less the situation I've been finding myself in a lot lately. (Lying around doing nowght, that is.)

I've had a half finished sketch on my desk since my last post, just sitting there, judging me.

Not sure whether to just finish it or if I've left it too long. Might start anew. I can rarely go back to a drawing if I've left it for a while.

I wish I had a tablet if I'm honest.

Like mapping, SFM-ing and writing, I haven't had much time for drawing. At best I've just been doing little scribbles every now and then, such as thus.

Had a plan for this, hence the weird dimensions, but didn't go through with it. Either way, there it is.
Was an interesting little experiment in more pixel-y art. I may do some more with a little more structure, maybe scaled down to be more like proper pixel art.

Yeah, I know no-one else is posting here. And I don't care.

Picked up OpenCanvas 6 last night, and gave it a whirl this morning. So, so, so much easier to use and better than paint.net, which was what I was using before.

Aforementioned whirl.

What I'm currently working on.

The somewhat stilted pose/angle (and assorted body parts scattered around) is because I'm making a 2.5D animation with it: it's currently being rigged in Maya.

Just to bring this topic back on track, I'll outline some of my own drawing tips.
  • Drawing is a skill, like anything else. I don't believe in natural ability: anyone can become a good at drawing. Practice, practice, practice.
  • Expose yourself to the work of a variety of artists. It's tempting to try and find work that you feel is aesthetically pleasing or close to what you feel your style is, but you're limiting your knowledge. You never know what you'll latch onto as a style. You must do this ALL THE TIME - I can't stress this enough, even if you think your drawing style is perfect.
  • Once you start settling into a style, start imitating the work of the artists you really like. You can start off doing direct imitations, but keep advancing it until all you're taking is just little pieces of their style (perhaps the way they draw a nose, or a mouth or some other feature). You'll find that your own style will start to emerge.
  • From a technical point of view, if you're going to imitate an artist, try challenging yourself. Instead of doing a direct copy of the line art as you see it, break the composition down into rough shapes. That way, you get a sense of how the original artist reached their own result: I don't know any artists that don't rough out their work first.
  • Developing drawing abilities is a fairly autonomous task, but there are courses you can do that would help: stuff like nude drawing, perspective drawing and still life painting help a lot. There are a tonne of reference books for human poses and shapes that are well worth investing in. Understanding exactly what gives a human figure its form, weight and balance is the path to understanding how you can exaggerate those features and make them feel believable.
  • Don't get bogged down in tools and equipment and programs, at least not at an early stage. A good set of pencils, erasers and paper still can't beat a computer. I generally work digitally, but everything I produce starts out life as a rough sketch on paper.
  • There are certain rules and techniques with drawing (and art in general). Always remember that these 'rules' are just guidelines. Sometimes it's just fun to go nuts.

Nice work, Jessie. I would say to look a little more carefully at the shape of the arm, as they generally taper a lot more at the crook and the wrist than what you've demonstrated. Secondly, a hand pressed up against a hard surface like will not create a hard line as you've got it depicted there - I would put in a curve away from the glass at the point where you've got the shadow on the arm, rather than where the arm ends now.
