I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a bit of a procrastinator. I won't really start working on mine until the final week probably ;)

I've been studying colors a little, but instead of mapping i'm applying color to toy design... I may still get something together to enter though.

I feel like a nice abstract house will be a good idea, and fsr I keep imagining working door knobs. I just imagine them being sexy full bright.
Posted 10 years ago2014-08-02 17:05:55 UTC Post #320955
I've had to start all over again. I didn't like my first idea, it was too stupid and kinda nonsense.

So yeah, I'm a bit like CapT too (procrastinator).
Also, ideas starts going in my head few days before the deadline. So I don't think you'll be able to see a WiP of my map anytime soon (also because my head is currently full of fuck tbh...). :|

Mini in the sense that not all aspects of mapping is judged and you can 1 month instead of 2. You also only have to worry about how your map looks, hell you don't even light it :>

This minicompo is not dead by a long shot, if that's what you mean ;)

There are far more impressive WIP posted for this one already than the previous minicompo, so if anything I would guess we'll have a better turnout this time, and don't forget dem prizes doe! (including yours if you enter, I'm guessing 7-8 entries minimum)

The only thing I would say for the future is to keep the time period short, a fortnight or a little more MAX, to help keep everyone focused :)

If you want, maybe we can ask the GoldSource Engine Ambassador at GameBanana to advertise this, since there is plenty of time left?(unless you want to keep it strictly a TWHL thingie)

It'd be fun to see what people all over the net would do for goldsource, or source now that we have the materials made for that.

Also I updated the materials so the renaming thing isn't necessary. Kind of a derpy thing to have to do that. OP needs updating too when someone can.

I really like the parameters involved here, really interesting.

When I think of color I think of mood to go with it i.e. music, sound, ambience, shadow etc. Without custom sound and shadow these stipulations cause me to think uniquely in a way I don't think I have done before.

If it weren't due to stress from work, I think i'd have something in mind.

Hi, this is CapT, just wondering info if you think it would be a good idea to pimp a thread about the minicompo on GB? Rim seemed cool with it, but I would double-check with he and Atom before plugging it ;)

Since they're both ok with it, then let's do that.

If you could please prepare a description with proper english I'll be grateful, then I'll make the thread with all the info needed (since my english is not perfect, I like things clean, ya know...).

I think it's freeform Rim, he just has to redo the links and headings, because GB doesn't accept our bbcode.

Some progress last night

The weird rainbow sky is done by using giant rotating cylinders, 4 length-wise and 2 crossways on each end, with the rotation such that the left/right/up/down all rotate into each other.

This creates a quite interesting Warp-Speed effect, and acts as a nice backdrop for the spaceship, tho I will probably limit the palette to blues and purples. Hopefully, the ship will turn out good enough to offset the gimmicky background :)

Would this be considered a mini competition or a regular one over at GB?

Also, a lot of the stuff is verbatim, except some of the bullet point stuff and text colors. That's GB specific.

EDIT: TWHL'ers have had a head start. Maybe we should wait and have GB hold a seperate compo only to be fair. Also, our prizes aren't much and maybe when they host their own, they can have their own prize pool for their community. I wouldn't mind sharing the compo idea, put it out there.

As for an official GameBanana competition: Yes.
As for a random one made with a thread in the GoldSource section: No.

Basically, once an official competition/contest is set up, authorized admins and moderators only can write the contest rules, prices, and all the text with the information (like your first post, Rim).
It has to be professional, it has to be worthy enough (prizes) compared to the competition difficulty, it has to be a specific deadline, etc...

And, of course, this will take time for me to convince them to make a competition for a GoldSource game. They rather make competitions for today's games or anyway more recent ones.

Just tell me if you prefer an official compo, or a simple one set by me in the GoldSource section. You choice. :)

2 things:

1: I would love to see this reach an amazing number of games and engines.

2: Our prizes are not worth that much TBH. My Art prize has an ambiguous value and I don't know the worth of a Minecraft code.

For now, set it up as a non-official compo for Source/Goldsource.

Posted 10 years ago2014-08-05 01:46:01 UTC Post #320995
A Minecraft code is good enough I think. I'll ask the GB bosses. If it's good enough then if you want we could easily set up an official one.

And, I almost forgot, a compo must have at least 3 winners and 3 different prices (which the first one receives the best one, obviously). So if you have 2 other things that are less important than a Minecraft code, then it could be set up easily I think.

Also, setting up a compo that is for both Source and GoldSource engines requires a thread to be opened in a generic section (e.g.: Steam section). I can't just open a thread in the GoldSource section while Source is involved too, unfortunately. :/
TWHL'ers have had a head start. Maybe we should wait and have GB hold a seperate compo only to be fair.
I completely agree. People would get mad if just one of them knows that some of us have already started this on another site. I recommend to wait until the next compo commence.

I was thinking more of a unofficial plug to the minicompo, so peeps at GB could decide to join if they wanted, but that's neat to know they would possibly allow us to host/sponsor an official compo there someday? :o

I have to look into it. I have to speak with SkyppySDK, which he's the contest moderator.

I agree, this one should stay on TWHL, and next transition to GB then again who am I to say when I probably won't finish an entrance for this one. Just been too busy and already spent a lot of time mapping recently on the last mini competition.

It's a shame because I really like this one. :aggrieved:

@CapT: I like the blue version (maybe use white/grey/black at the middle instead of purple if you go with that version?)

Done some small additions to my level, nothing worth posting an update for. Other than that, i've been slacking on my entry as well, been fiddling my time in EQ's level editor - landmark, since i got a beta invite couple of weeks ago.
I'm free 'till late september tho, so plenty of time to work on my stuff next week when i get back home.

I agree Kachito :)

The reds/oranges/yellows/magentas look way too Looney Tunes for the theme. So many ideas for color variation, so little time. Btw rebuilding the ship, but I think I need to start over again and make it less round ;)

Question
Is anyone dropping out because of the gulf of capabilities/resources between GS/Source engines? If yes, maybe we should consider switching this back to HL1 only?

I would be willing to switch my entry back to gs if that's the case, and we could add an extra week if anyone needed more time..

It just seems like a lot of people lost interest after we included Source?
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 10 years ago2014-08-07 21:10:00 UTC Post #321060
I think people were losing interest before that. We included source to open up more potential and let more people join if they wanted to.

Also, the gap between the two engines, given the parameters of the compo, isn't very apparent unless you're using engine specific things.

Ok then. I would disagree with your second point though, as my current minicompo map isn't even possible in GS, and I'm not using any Source-specific entities or 3D Skybox so far.

In GS, you make anything too big or too complicated it just gives up, spitting out the AllocBlock:full error when you try loading BSP ;)

[i]SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT[/i]
I said a while ago that around August 6th, I'd make a special announcement. It's the 8th and I have a bit of time over the weekend to do this so here goes.

Any of you who have seen Face Off or Jim Henson's Creature Shop knows how this works. Lyssa and I will give a little half-way help where you privately send me what you have so far and I will make some comments/suggestions about your work so you can improve it before finally entering. This will not be biased in any way and it's a great way to make sure your idea is fully realized or at least feeling like a completed idea.

Email your WIP's to windmasterben@gmail.com and say a few things about it so I know from you what's going on. You get one email in return from me with my response and feedback. This help, of course, is optional but it is recommended.

Hope to be talking to you guys soon!

Lajron and I agree that you gave us too much time for this one Rimmeh-Atom! I heartily recommend no more than a fortnight or a bit more for the next one :)

Mine will easily be done with time to spare, and I've only worked on it a few half days max... 11 days left people, that's still PLENTY of time to build/refine your entry!

Don't blame Atom and I for giving you too much time. I know things get in the way and this is exactly why I gave a lot of time. Learn to manage your tasks and time better if you keep having problems, it's a good skill to have.

Posted 10 years ago2014-08-11 14:49:07 UTC Post #321101
It's not about blaming anyone, it's about keeping people's attention.

If there's only a couple weeks, anyone intersted in the minicompo will get started right away. If you KNOW you have an entire month, more than likely it will get put off, and/or forgotten, or replaced by another task.. [/2 cents]
