So I'm bored and I want to make something. I was thinking of a 1-Hour build Video series for Source or GoldSource.

Start from scratch and map a scenario in one hour or less.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Sounds cool, but if I were you i'd do a one day map build and time lapse it.

Maybe a counterstrike map or surf map or something.

A split screen video of you making a rats map of your room would be cool too because it could show you measuring everything and converting the objects, shelves doors etc. into hammer at a larger scale.

Not sure I want to sit and watch real-time mapping for an hour. I'd certainly be interested in watching that hour in timelapse form, however.

Perfect. Timelapses are easy.
I could do source, GoldSource, models, etc etc.

Is there something you guus would like to see in particular?

If you're set to finish a level in 1 hour, well... It's going to be "underwhelming" no matter how good you are.
I'd say focus on something smaller: a prop, textures/materials, vfx. Or maybe a timelapse video showing the progress of your level over time, like Crypt suggested.

But a map rushed up in 1 hour, meh. I don't like the concept of speedmapping.
Quality>quantity.

Hmm.. I had a better Idea.
What If i take some of the tutorials on this site and turn them into a video format?

For example, It might be worth exploring Detail textures for HL1 (in under an hour). I've never used them and it doesn't seem like a lot of people do.

I could use timelapse where necessary to speed things up

I think a video addendum would be welcomed if you don't feel too relunctant about it. :P
Maybe Penguin could plaster the embedded videos next to the tuts, once TWHL4 is out.

Ever since VHLT, a lot of them are outdated/incomplete. Take the detail textures guide for example; many mappers/modders think you can only use a grey palette detail tex, thanks to the ones coming with stock HL/CS 1.6.

Edit: Also not much love for SDK tuts around here lately, not that there wouldn't be enough of them floating 'round the web, still... A ton cs:go "tricks" i only see used in top notch maps.

Video tutorials/walkthroughs would be cool! Youtube videos will be easily embeddable in TWHL4, so if you want to, go ahead!

I sort of like the idea of longer build videos, but to be honest, I don't have an hour spare to watch something like that personally. If you can reduce them to 5-10 minutes I probably would though!

I'd like to have a try at this too once I finish with all the exams in February.
Why don't we make this a community project? Create one big map/mod that has "rooms" (not necessarily enclosed space, see how Talos has its levels), each "room" being a demonstration for one tutorial assigned to somebody( I didn't think this through, but you guys can, I'm in a hurry). Then the video tutorials could be linked to each "room", where the author explained how everything was created.

Sounds a lot like TWHL:Rooms, only for tutorials :).

Great Idea striker!
To start that, when I make my first video, I'll put a link to the source material (located here) in the youtube video.

It can be re-organized once TWHL4 launches, but it's definitely time to bring TWHLs tutorials into the mid 2010's

Tutorial videos definitely sounds like something that could be very beneficial for TWHL. Striker's idea sounds good too, if it becomes a group project then it shouldn't be too difficult to get an example for every tutorial we have.
