Learn from your mistakes, try again.

If you keep coming back to it, you must like it in some way.

I said make me quit. And no I never learn because I saw reason. Those reasons are I can't make good art, I can't program, I can't make music, I can't make anything because I'm not a genius, I'm not an artist, I'm not a good speaker, I'm not fast and I failed at my life for thinking that making games where anything near good.

Even if I do succeed, I will fail. I can do a slip or my community is getting just as toxic like anything that ever existed. All I can do is rant about popular things.

And guess what? It's a circle, all of it.

Have you considered trying to get older? As I aged I considerably lost interest in gaming and having fun altogether. Not less sad, let me tell you.

Excellent Screamernail, you sounded just like a pussy would sound.
Now that we know what the problem is it is easy to provide you a simple solution to it:

Finish what you started.

Force your self to finish whatever you started even if it makes you cough out blood. You will never ever find reason in anything that you do not fight for in your life, ever. No falling in love, no wisdom, nothing will ever make sense nor reason the further you progress as you will never be the one who is on top of it all.

Only by finishing what you started will you learn that there is only one way, and one way only, with which only all makes sense and that is Love. (1 Corinthians 13)

I'm not going to make you quit anything.

It seems you're kinda depressed right now, and quitting is never the answer when you're in that state of mind.
I can't program
From what I've seen you've created the basics of a mod. Scripting is a simple form of programming and you need that for doors and triggers and even your model QC files. What do you WANT to program exactly? I'm sure you just mean "you don't yet have the ability to program whatever you want." If you want to learn how to program, try. You will fail. Keep trying, you will succeed.
I can't make music
Do you own an instrument? Have you tried?
I can't make anything because I'm not a genius
False, also you don't need to be a genius to do anything. Do you think the person who built your house was a genius? No, but i'm sure he learned how to swing a hammer pretty well - he had a certain skillset for a certain application.
I'm not an artist
I've seen your mod demo video. The atmosphere of the alien ship is pretty good. I would 100% call you an artist.
I'm not a good speaker
In English? If it's not your native language, that's fine. We can all understand what you're saying.
I'm not fast
Why do you even think that matters?

Without trying to be rude man, have you considered seeing a therapist or doctor? You seem to have this wild, entirely unprovoked mood swings that cause you to make these strange and confusing posts. Why are you talking about PC gaming being overrated - what relevance does that have to anything? Does it matter if people love the content you create? as long as you like it, doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks to be honest. And why on earth do you keep coming back to this site, then claiming out of nowhere that you don't want to be here or don't belong, disappear, then come back with some deviantart apology? Your behaviour is erratic man, please speak to someone in real life, not over the internet. It's concerning.

Maybe the reason you aren't getting support for these things is because nobody can understand what you're talking about?
Games are difficult and take forever to make. There's a reason proper indie developers can disappear for years on end trying to make stuff; it's a time consuming process to do correctly. If you enter expecting to make AAA gold, you're wasting your time. If you enter expecting what you make to be a failure, you're wasting your time. Be an optimist for once, that's coming from me, a nihilistic pessimist.

Are you some kind of people help scientist? Your first instinct was to come in here and call him a pussy, which (ignoring the obvious sexist ramifications) just comes off as jerkish and unhelpful.

I'm definitely no people help scientist, so I guess all I can say is stick with it. You can learn as much from failure as success. It ultimately comes down to what you really value.

Would you rather believe you are something that does not exist or be called something that can easily be changed?
There is no such thing as a genius, which he believes he has to be in order to do anything good with his own hands. A person called genius is some one who finishes what it started. Because determination and sacrifice for a cause are hard to gain without Love , and because 99% of people have no idea what Love is , an term genius was assigned to one who finishes what one started.

One can never be a genius if he does not finish what he started.

From his text it is obvious he has heard all those things you and others wrote already before, he is just simply lazy and uninterested into getting things done.

There are many reasons for a person to find trouble with motivation, determination and self-worth other than laziness. While I do think some of your comments are supposed to be helpful in some abrasive way, demeaning him is not. Not even slightly, so watch how you treat people around here.

Wanting to quit is a completely normal part of the creative process that happens to the best of us. Giving up isn't the end of the world, maybe you'll find the motivation to continue the project in the future.

I have some advice on keeping motivated.

1. Be realistic. There's an abundance of content creators all competing for the spotlight. If you think your project deserves attention, you also need to earn that. Having those goals as a beginner might be too ambitious. Undertake smaller projects, ones that can be finished in a few weeks maybe.
if your project seems too big, maybe put it off for the future when you have learned enough to give it another go.

2. Do something every day. Getting started is often the hardest part. Making a productive habit takes time (8 weeks I think). Try not to procrastinate. If you want to learn coding, learn it, don't put it off for another day. The same goes for everything. It all seems daunting until you actually get into it. Set up small daily goals, or try to learn something new every day, this all adds up in the end. Trading bad habits for good habits is hard and takes time.

3. Show the project to friends and communities, have it play-tested, upload screenshots etc. Having people take an interest in your project is hugely motivational.

Also, Leonardo Da Vinci was notorious for not finishing most of his work and he's considered one of the greatest geniuses ever. The key to achieving your goals is simply being productive, if you want to make a mod, make it every day and don't put things up for later. This is what almost every famous creator will agree on, without the hard work you will not get far.

I must say that I'm impressed at you people. Maybe I shouldn't leave the site because it does help me.

And about the "Uno Prospero" game. It isn't going to be that hard to make. It's a point and click game which I do believe is easier to make than a first-person-shooter. Yes it's on the 3DS but I can get around it in ease.

The game itself is going to be a simple one. (Because Simplicity is my style) this is the characters, and as you can see It's gonna be more different then what you would expect it to be. I've heard the 3DS isn't that powerful but yes, but it mustn't be that weak to handle a game based around 256 pixel sized images. It'll be more of a slideshow game to save space too. It might not be Valve standards but people just have to accept that it's different. It will however feature elements from the cancelled original.

Bless my soul if it won't work.

I've come to a decision to make content on Swedish TV instead.

This is from the Hive Workshop
Now I think.. Maybe I should support my country instead? Europe is in bad shape and needs help from someone competent. I know that if something is wrong it's wrong and that not everyone is a gamer. I think I need to work on something for my country to learn it. I can do slideshows but not program games. I haven't even started making even 2% of Uno Prospero.

Maybe my call isn't gaming. Maybe it's to support the old and the free.

I do believe I've gotten mental problems.

You can't ask someone else to control your desires. Take control of your life instead of delegating it to others. That's not fair to them, and they're not interested anyway.
You want what you want, and you need to deal with that. If what you want is detrimental to your life, you need to exercise self discipline.

But really it just sounds like you're not measuring up to an image in your head. People kill themselves over self pity like that, and it breaks my fucking heart. Learn to exercise some self respect. "I'm not an artist" fuck off with that attitude. There's not some cosmic council that got together to bring about the word "artist" into the world, you're an artist if you want to want to be one. I made this and I know I was a god damn artist.

Now as others have said, you probably hit a road block and are wondering if you're still interested in putting forth the effort to get it from point-A to point-Head-Image. If you're not interested anymore, that's cool. You might be later, or you might not. Artists of all kinds have stockpiles of unfinished work. On that note, I understand how painful it is to come to terms with disinterest when you were really hyped at first. That's just an exercise in managing your expectations. You need to know how to do that because it will help you in all areas of life.
Creativity involves dedication, but it's also a crap shoot. You can't force it. Or if you do, people know. You know how you can hear a song and tell if the creator actually gave a shit?

You also might have let down some people who might have been eager to see the finished product, but that's also cool. They'll get over it.

Edit: it also sounds like you got hyped about your project before you really even knew how you were going to make it. Maybe gaming isn't for you like you said, or maybe you just ran into an unexpected hurdle and thought, "Oh shit, I have to learn this" and got overwhelmed. Or maybe I'm not even talking to anyone at this point because you've already moved on to something else.

"I have to be super perfectly good expert at thing that I just started or else I am shameful and might as well give up"

Nobody teaches people to think like this yet everyone has this idea in their head, isn't that a bit suspicious?

That's because of social media and modern tv/web only showing people when they're successful, not when they fail.
Posted 1 year ago2018-01-14 22:38:28 UTC Post #338646
If you have trouble finishing what you set out to do, try giving yourself much more attainable goals. Start small. Really small. Something you know is within reach. Once you reach that minor goal, move the goalposts. Give yourself a new goal. Again, something that seems perfectly attainable from where you are now. Take each step one at a time, and you might find yourself at the top of the stairs without realizing it.

Like, if your goal was a Half-Life mod, break it down. Make that thing room by room if you have to. You can have an overall plan for the mod, but if you approach it piece by piece, it will seem a heck of a lot more doable. And don’t be afraid to ask for help where you need it! People aren’t likely to do your work for you, but they’ll often be happy to point you in the right directions.

Well. Who am I kidding? I am not smart.
If you're saying this, you're probably smarter than you give yourself credit for. But don't let that go to your head too much. It's very smart to be in touch with your limits. You should base your goals around your limits. If a specific kind of intelligence seems to be a limit, you need to learn how to work around it. That's wisdom doing work for you. I know it sounds circular, but I hope this makes sense.

I don't know anyone who was born an artist or programmer. Everything is learned through experience and mistakes (especially mistakes).

All these supposedly "talented" level designers got where they are by practicing their art over and over again.

Those who give up easily remain unskilled. Those with balls to continue become winners.

Look at it this way: if you think your stuff sucks, that's a good thing - that means you won't get a big head and will (or should) be constantly striving for improvement - unless you give up.

Don't give up.

...or I might have to come over there.

And if I have to come over there, somebody gon' catch these hands.
