OK. I have some custom textures that I made with photoshop and Wally. There is a custom grass texture, and a custom gravel texture. I want to acquire some .wav's to serve as my footstep sounds. I also need a wav that sounds like you are walking over wood (like a wooden floor). I dont need to make custom wavs or download these wavs if HL already has them available, but my guess is there is no grass.wav footstep sound.

My question is: How do I walk over my grass textured brush and hear grassy footsteps! or rocky/gravel footsteps! Or wooden floor footsteps? Or make is sound like the room I am in echo?

thanks a million ahead of time guys (and gals)

It's got all the definitions for the standard definitions. If the file isn't there already, get it from the sound directory in PAK0.PAK using Wally or another PAK-exploring program.

OK.

A. Seventh~ I found materials.txt in pak0, and I see what footstep sounds are available....I assume I need to put the name of my custom tex in there with the proper letter heading to get the sound I want....which leads me to three more questions:

1. This will hopefully work for my preview while using Hammer, how do I transfer this tex information to my map when completing it and playing my multiplayer map in Steam? I went into my steam folders, and found there is no materials.txt in my sound folder (nor in my old HL sound folder...) I only found it in my pak0 file....do I need to extract that file and place it in both my new (Steam) and my old HL folders to make it work for previewing in Hammer/playing finalized bsp in Steam?

2. Does it matter in which order I add my custom tex in materials.txt in that list of tex/sound attributes

3. What if the sound I want is NOT on the list of possible footstep sounds? I see metal, ventilation, slosh, dirt, etc......I want to have my grass sound.....Do I add the custom .wav(s) somewhere and then make a special letter to refer to that sound with? If so, how do I tie a certain letter to a certain sound?

Yes.

I doubt it; never tried myself though.
What if the sound I want is NOT on the list of possible footstep sounds?
Hm, I'm not sure you can do anything about that, it's probably coded. I'd use 'dirt' if you had to.
Does WHAT have examples WHERE already?
Think he means does materials.txt have examples to show the usage, which it does indeed.

Thank you Seventh, changing the materials.txt worked for my custom grass tex (changed it to dirt sounding footsteps, which were close enough), but when I choose wood as the sound for a specific HL texture, it just changed the way it sounded when I hit it, not when I walked on it...is that normal? the tex is TRRM_WOOD2 and the sound letter prefix was 'W' in materials.txt.....

I've never tried messing around with materials.txt... but do you remember ever walking on wood in HL? I don't remember a particularly wood-y sound when I did (the wooden-platforms-on-cliff-edge-with-huge-drop bit)

there is a 'W' for wood....but it only affects the sound of how you hit it...

will the materials.txt replace their existing one? What if soemone ELSE already made a custom footstep sound....I would be replacing theirs! How do I do this efficiantly without getting my custom footstep replaced....also, when somewone DL's my map from my server, those footsteps will not transfer...or will they? :zonked:

Package your map as a MOD, add the materials.txt to the sound folder of YOUR MOD.
That way, the original won't be changed.
If you package the mod then others will have access to the new text.

Small tutorial on materials.txt up next week.
