Basically I need a space ship - nothing too big - about X wing size ... ;)

I've got enough on my plate trying to learn the basics rather tan get in to modelling as well, so I was wondering if there are any resources out there that are worth thinking about. Obviously I'd prefer it if they were free, but I'd like to know in general.

I also got to thinking maybe there are some in the original game (haven't finished it yet so wouldn't know!!) that I could use. I figured these would be stored in the pak file but my computer insists there are none on my hard drive. Would they be buried in the gcf file like the wad file was? do I have to extract it? what is the difference between a wad and a pak and a gcf and a fgd?

Try searching for models, The Doenerking has some free prop models.

I doubt there will be a X-wing model, though. You might want to ask a modeller if he wants to do it for you, or create that X-wing from world-brushes.

.pak files are sorta zip files, with an internal folder hierarchy, used to story the game's content.
.wad contain the textures you use.
.gcf files seem also a sort of zip file to me, however I'm not used to them because I don't use Steam. But I've heard some of the files are stuffed into these .gcf files and you have to extract them before being able to use them for editing purposes.
.fgd files are small documents that tell Hammer what entities you can choose from.

A WAD and a PAK are fairly similar technically. They both share features with good ol' ZIPs. WADs, though, are only used for textures, while PAKs store a large part of the game. Open both in Wally.

GCFs are kinda like grown-up PAKs. They're only used in Steam and can be opened with GCFScape.

FGDs are Forge Game Data files. They just make mapping easier by remembering all the entities you can use. You could actually map without FGDs at all, but you'd have to type in the name of every entity and every property (i.e. you wouldn't have a list like SmartView offers). FGDs are only needed when mapping. They are nothing to do with the game itself! You cannot just use, say, a TFC FGD to map for Half-Life in order to use TFC features as many people seem to think.
