it went through the others bits qwickly but now its hanging on visbuildleafs, is this a magor part of the compile ?

Yes this a major part of the compile. You just have to be very patient. Some (albiet poor maps) take days to do a full compile. I suggest you turn off VIS and RAD if you need to do a quick compile. Your map will have no lights, but will appear in 'fullbright' mode. This is useful for testing entity setups and the like.
