Steam stores it's files in some sort of pak files although they have a different extension. You'll need a browser for these files and probably you'll need to unpack these files.

However, since I don't use Steam I can't tell you what program you need and such. There are some guys around here that do know, though. Just wait for their replies.

You need GCFscape. It opens GCF's, which are those equivalents of PAK files for steam. I think Snarkpit had a link. I have no idea where to look in your GCFs as I don't use Steam, either, but they're somewhere in there.

You can get GCFScape here. Open SteamSteamAppshalf-life.gcf in it, then go to /valve in the GCF (it's like a ZIP archive).

Right-click halflife.wad on the right-hand side, then click Extract. Point it where you want it to go, and voila :)

I'm going to write a tutorial about mapping for Steam.

Good idea on steam mapping, I've seen lots of questions (not here): "OMG HOW DO I SET UP HAMMER FOR STEAM!?!?!?"

Its a bug in the software (GCFscape). Find a new version? Or a different prog.

i needed to download a fix for the prog when i got it (many moons)

if you have half-life previous to steam (retail or otherwise) you can simply use the halflife.wad from that. copy it to ya vhe folder or summat.

Get rid of WON? No way. I can't play bshift then! It only takes up a small percentage of my disk anyways.

Anonymous fella: don't use "Shell execute". Right-click -> Extract. Does something similar to me otherwise.

That sounds right. Just open the GCFScape.exe file.

Then File -> Open, and then find half-life.gcf or counter-strike.gcf or whatever (in SteamSteamApps). Then... navigate it and right-click the file you want.

I guess you need .NET framework.
