I know its unusual to see me asking a question but it's late, I'm tired, and cant possibly imagine the problem's source.

But here goes:

It wont start up the map or compile it.
It eventually tells me it cannot find the map in Half-Life.

Is this becasue the directory is too long because of that stupid Steam?

P.s. Yes, I am making a lego style DM map, and it's coming along well -- apart from this bullshit.

Obviously it's cutting off the end of the directory name made of your email address.

Some suggestions concerning exactly the same problem:
http://forums.thewavelength.net/index.php?s=ddf73adff184221f15b360c51c3422c3&showtopic=10678&st=0&#entry88693

According to that discussion '@' is not well-liked by the dispatcher.

For your info, if you're willing to setup steam again, they changed it and it no longer uses your email address. You can pick just a login name and that may solve the problem with a folder named something@stuff.somewhere.somethingelse.

Right, thanks for your help. I think I'll batch compile it.

Um, i know its a kinda old post, but you dont have to batch compile it.... I had some errors the same, and some other ones... The directory names are too long. Cut and paste your steam folder to your C:/ drive, and then put your settings to run with that. It should work

Probably a bad idea. SUBST is a much better way, so you can map, say, e:Program FilesSierraHalf-LifeSteamSteam to s: like so:

1. Open a DOS prompt
2. SUBST S: "e:Program FilesSierraHalf-LifeSteamSteam"
3. Done.

I added steam after I already had hammer running so I keep my rmfs in c:program filesvalve hammer editormaps and compile the bsps directly to c:sierrahalf-lifemaps.

That way I don't have to mess with steam at all.

To expand upon Seventh's subst suggestion, what I've done is made a batch file with the following contents:

subst G: C:ValveSteamSteamAppsRabidMonkey777
subst H: C:ValveHammer
subst I: C:SierraBlue-Shift
subst J: C:Editing

This file is in my startup directory as when you shut down your computer, the current substs get erased, and it makes it convenient to just run G:half-life instead of having to type C:valvesteamsteamapps etc. each time I need to get into the HL dir. I've also substed my Hammer, Bshift and Editing dirs for convenience :) .

Hm, that's rather easier than the way I set it to run at startup in the XP Pro policy editor:

A screenshot for anyone who wants to see how it's done is here.
