I just had this pop up in my mind. How do the phases of a game progress. I know it goes Alpha then Beta, and then I guess there's the final product.

Now what I want to know is what the game is during these phases. For example, is the Alpha phase just the game designing stage where mappers make the well, uh...maps! Can anyone clear this up for me?

Beta is, from what i know, the first testing stage, where people test the map and fix bugs, make last touches, improve what the tester thinks there should be, ect.

Alpha stage is when the people who make the game get to play it to see if it works - a new feature or something... beta is when you get a team of people to test your product for bugs.

Quite often when people get a chance to play the beta,they have a silence rule, and they arent allowed to speak of the storyline, or anything else included in the rule stated by the company, untill release date.

Alpha-stage means the game is not yet completely playable. Parts of the game are done but much still has to be linked together, and lots of things have to be finished yet.

Beta-stage means the game is playable, all things are in place, the game can be played from start to end. Although things still can be changed and such, the game is pretty close to it's final shape.

That's how far I understand it at the moment. There should be some articles on this, perhaps you can do a little search?

After beta I think it goes to Release Candidate, which is about where HL? is now, where the publishers' approval is seeken (sook? Seeked?)
