If they will shoot the strider the whole combine army will come down at them. The combines will come even if they wont fire, the strider cry is very very loud. S even if they can drive under the strider the combines will soon come and destroy them for sure. I still say A for there is less chance that they will be hit! :)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-30 16:42:49 UTC Post #144494
who says the entire combine army will come? Remember Elon there's en entire resistance here waging guerrilla (is that spelt right?) warfare upon them. And how is the strider going to be able to react to them quickly enough? If they're going to fast there is probably no chance that the strider will hit.

"Drive under it" said Amber, calmly

"huh?" responded Josh

"get up fast enough and go right under it, if we hit a leg it will just lose its balance, we will be fine." Amber said, still completly unfazed by the weight of the situation.

"This better work"

The APC started moving toward the stider, Tom asked "Mark, put the rocket in the stiders belly, quick!"

Mark didn't ask why, they were only 30 yards away and speeding up. He grabed the rocket Tom had modified and shoved it in the breach of a launcher. 10 yards and Mark pressed the button to pop the hatch. The hatch openend, Mark stuck the rocket laucher out, pointing it strait up. The strider's body was just ahead, Mark fired. The rocket shot up, its momentum still carring it forward. Mark saw it strike the belly of the strider as they passed under it. as they sped past it a disipating Jet of flame could be seen coming out of the top, along with a viscostic blue goo bleeding out the bottom. It's legs started to go limp, but Josh took the APC around a corner and Mark lost sight of it, so he ducked back into the APC.

"I should make more of those," commented Tom "they seem to work really well"

Mark looked at the main screen and saw a rear view had been brought up, so they all could see the strider's demise

"Ya, they do. That was a good shot to Mark." said Dan as he patted Mark on the back

"theirs no chance of the strider following us now." said Tom

"And the other one?" asked Dan

"To slow and far away, we have noting to fear from it." answerd Tom

"were there anyway, no need to argue now," interjected Josh "Some of us will have to walk ahead and tell them not to shoot though, seeing as were in the very well know combine APC.

"why don't Me and Mark go," suggested Tom "Mark?"

"sure" Mark replied

He and Tom jumped out, and Mark started following Tom. The APC was hidden, in a dark corner behind a dumpster. The dark made mark realize how dark it had gotten, so he looked to the sky, seeing it as a dull orange in the distance, Night was comming fast. The dark shadows everywhere were cast from the old buildings, Mark thought they were werehouses or factories. He caught up to Tom as he turned down and alley and knocked on the door that was there.

"Who is it?" came a voice from inside

"Its Zorro" Tom told the voice, mark assumed zorro was a password or something

The door swung inward and two men were pointing their guns right at Tom, but they lowered them when they saw there were no combine near by.

Tom spoke first "hey, guys. I got a combine APC full of ammo and a few guys, so could you guys open loading bay door so we can park it where it won't be seen."

"eh, a combine APC, whatever you say Tom, we trust ya." said the man on the left

"but how did you get it here without us knowing, our lookouts should have informed us." said the other. he took out his radio and started talking into it.

The man on the other end replied "well, see...we heard the strider and thought it would be best to stay out of sight. So we really didn't have a view of anything"

the man with the radio mumbled something about them being idiots. Then yelled to the other side of the building to get one of the loading docks open and a ramp out. Tom told Mark to got tell his brother to drive the thing in, so mark started walking back. He had trouble spoting the APC in the dusk light, but when he got close enough to where it was he saw it. He knocked on the hatch and jumped in when it opened.

"your all clear, one of the loading docks is open for you." he told Josh. the APC began moving, turning down a road between the buildings, it was short, maybe 25 feet, ending in a closed courtyard that had loading docks in the back. one of them was open and two guys were hauling a wooden ramp out of it. They layed the ramp down, giving Josh a way to get into the elevated door. Josh pulled up and parked inside, he shut down the APC and opened the hatch. Mark followed Amber and Dan out of the APC. He found himself in a garage area, their were a couple of cars in the back, and a few guys dressed like mechanics in the area. A group of rebels walked up the APC, one went in once Fitz had gotten out with the help of Josh.

"Hey, guys, word is spreading about me and Tom being here. Were ah...well know for our standup comedy. So we are going to check in with Mr. Deuce, the guy in charge. He has the latest news, so do you guys want to come?

A) go now, mingle with local resistance members later

B) go mingle with local resistance members now, get the news second hand later

hey, I give realistic choices. if you want me to ill give you every possible choice Mark could make, and if I included the illocical ones you would see over 50 choices.

so, what would you rather have? The 2-4 most logical choices a person would make, or as many as I can think of?

And I mean, come on, what is he going to do other then go or not?

about the horibly formated one eairlyer, i just realized that I just looked at it and realized that I had copied it from notepad with wordwrap on. so sorry about that. but anyway, here you go with the next one

"I'll come" said Mark

"Me too." said Dan

"I'd come, but I should bring Fitz to their medics." said Amber

"Come on then" Tom told Mark and Dan

Josh and Tom started walking away, Dan and Mark followed. As they walked Mark saw that the large building that they were in was just a loading dock for an even larger building attached to it. as they walked past the many oversized doors to the main complex Josh stated telling them about this place, and the resistance's past.

"These complexs were part of the biggest industrial park in the city. It was abandoned though when things went south, the Portal storms started, creatures ported in everywhere, Buildings disipeared, world trade went to hell in a handbasket. The economy failed, resulting in a bad depression for a few months. Communication was hell, nothing in this world was ready for the EM spikes and the lightning. Then the Combine Universal Union came, and the seven hour war started. We might have stood a chance if the world had the ability to unite, but without communications that couldn't happen. Nukes couldn't be launched, militarys couldn't be mobilized fast enough. After the war every country had surrendered. But for 40 days you still had a huge amount of resistance, Gurrilla warfare all over the world. But every force was crushed. Then we formed up by uniteing those who still had fight left in them under the Black Mesa symbols, the BM icon, the lamda, Freemans name. Eli did a good job with this, He, Kliener, and Breen were supposedly the only 3 Major Scientists from Black Mesa who survived, and we all know which ways they went. Now, after a few years of resistance most of the Western European resistance is under the Black Mesa Flag. We have no clue what Asia, Africa, Austrialia, or any of the Americas are up to, all the A's. But here we formed our groups. Black Mesa East was built by the town of Ravenholm, which was 100% agaist the combine. Eli and most of the rest of our smart members went their to try to get a good base of opperations established, and to reconstruct a teleporter. the teleporter was supposedly to get Freeman from wherever all the vortigaunts came from, apperently Freeman went their and stoped the things that were enslaveing them. This means he saved a world from the Combine, and that is why everyone rallyed to his name. He's a Hero and Messiah to many. And he returned, without the help of Eli, which further made him an Icon. We got dozens of people contacting resistance members trying to join up the instant the news got out. They all hope he can save them, all hoping for a new, combineless, Life. I will admit that I hope for that too, but I don't belive one man is going to do it. Freeman maybe powerful, but Mr. Hev suit can't stop an army on his own. Which is why were all here. Now that he's back its inevitable that an uprising is going to start. and we have been preparing for it for years. And I feel bad for the hundreds of people who are going to lose their lifes within minutes of it stating, but I think that they know that too, and it is what amazes me about that image of freeman. This resistance is built on it, and has people willing to die for it, and these buildings have weapons to arm every person willing to fight for it. We have SMG's, pistols, snipers, pulse rifles, rocket lauchers, weapons from 20 years ago, and 50 rounds for every combine bastard on this planet. But anyway, ill let the General fill you in on the rest of the details, since we will be their in a jiffy."

Josh walked down a service stairwell with Tom and Dan behind him. Mark almost triped on the steap grated stairs because he was pondering what Josh had just been telling him. The stairs lead to a walkway under the main complex, Storage tanks lined it.

Tom spoke up as they began down the hallway "these tanks stored oil and water, they wern't very full when we converted them, but it still took a few days to empty out the oil ones. we use them now as confrence, or storage rooms. their is a stairwell at the other end near the control room, but it faster to go this way then get through the din of people above, and quiter to."

They were at the other end in less then a minute. there was a control room here along with a few offices attached to it. The control room was filled with safty valves and lights that Mark knew wouldn't ever be on again. Mark followed the others into what seemed like the largest office. The first thing Mark saw was a hand made plack on the wall that read 'Welcome to StalinCity'. Then he saw that behind the desk was a man who was clearly in his 40's but looked much older. he had an aura of calmness about him as well.

"This is John Stalin" said Tom "we named this resistance complex StalinCity as a joke, allusion, and tribute. Because we all know that if the combine decide to besiege this place we will defend his name. and our home, to our death. Just like it happened back then."

"ya, whatever you guys say" John spoke up from behind the desk. "Its nice to see you Major's, I just got word that you were here a few minutes ago. you didn't run into trouble on the way I hope."

"Just two striders, nothing Toms new rockets couldn't handle, the main thing was that we were running from our barn, it got shelled." responded Josh

"Oh, the barn is lost then, thats sad news. But we do have some good news, so why don't you guys ask whatevers on your mind so we can get that cleared up first. Then ill tell you the rest of the story.

A) ask about Freeman

B) ask about Kaufman

C) ask about Black Mesa East

D) ask about the resistance on the Coast

The history part was incredibley well done. The way you explained the surroundings first and then went on to that enormous paragraph of speech meant that I could picture the men walking through coridors and past noisey machinery with Josh at the front, preaching as he went.

Very well done. Keep it going, I'm hooked on my own story.

hmmm, didn't post the first time

but anyway, here it is. its one of those where the decision is just to give a break for both of us.

But without further banther before it, Here:

"How are all the guys we have on the coast." asked Tom

"Well, I think stable would be the right word for them" answered John. "New Little Odesa is fine, They were attacked by a gunship right after Freeman arived, he's got a steam roller following him it seems. luckily, one of our contacts had recently droped off a few rocket launchers their, Freeman got one and took out the gunship, then was on his way. Lighthouse point was almost destroyed, again Freeman was there to help out. and our base out side of Nova Prospeckt had an encounter with an ant lion matriarch, but there fine. Now about the rest of the news. Kaufman was..."

Just then two slow, blaring pulses of sound rang out.

"...Darn, that means there shuting the main power off for the night. How about I finish catching you guys up in the morning?" said John

"that will be fine" said Tom. "were not in a rush."

John got up from behind his desk and started heading for the door. Everyone followed him. As John walked by the command console that went around the length of the room he flicked a flashlight on, then off again, seeing as the power wasn't off just yet. Mark saw that there was a pile of flashlights on the console, since he noticed that Fitz and Dan had grabbed one, he did the same.

The accened another steep steel grate stairwell into a large, walled off area of the main complex. The walls themselves were only a story tall, leaving another two before the ceiling started. there were doors in the walls every 10 feet or so, and the wall was topped with a fence. Mark assumed that because there were boxes on the other side of that fence that there was flooring, and that there were separate rooms underneath.

The Buzzer rang again, this time with a single blair and not the double as it had been a minute ago.

"You guys have any food here?" Mark asked.

"Ya, we have a buffet of sorts just over there, there probably putting stuff away now, but you should be able to grab something." answered John.

"Thanks, I don't think ive eaten in a few days."

"O, and we store the extra cots up there" added Tom, pointing to the fence walled area above them, "so you can grab some sleep until we get you proper bunking in a day or so."

Marked walked throught the open slideing door nearest to the direction John had pointed him in. The food was easy to spot, there were a few tables with metal heating trays on them. Two men were cleaning things up, but they had a bit to go before they had it all packed for the night. So Mark walked up and started eating some of the chicken in one of the hot plates still on the tables. To him it was the best food he had ever had.

The buzzer went off again and the lights went out. mark saw dozens of lightbeams pop into existence as flashlights were turned on. A radio came on to, and had its volume quickly turned down. Mark grabbed and ate another piece of chicken then started back to the cot storage place. He realized he wasn't very tired though, even though he very little sleep since Todd and Lisa were killed in his apartment. But that seemed so long ago, weeks, months, years ago to him infact. He had seen so much in the last few dozen hours that he had almost changed completly from then. But Mark still felt as if he needed something.

Then it hit him, he felt like an idiot for an instant, pondering such things as he had been he realized he had forgotten that he needed to go to the bathroom. He walked past the stairway up to the cots and started looking for someone to ask. He saw a flashlight beam comming around the corner in front of him. A woman emerged, she looked to be around Marks age, either very late teens or very early twenties. She had tan skin, clearly of asian decent, Mark noticed that she had a very nice figure as well.

"Is there something I can help you with?" she asked

"O...sorry, I was lost in thought for a second..." said mark, almost startled at the realization that he had been stareing for a few seconds, the woman smirked, and Mark finished up his sentence, "...Do you know where the bathroom is?"

"I do, its right over there." she said, pointing to a wall from the direction she had come. Mark started walking toward it, still embarased with his quick lapse in concentration, when the woman spoke up again, "Your new here arn't you? why don't you join me in the loft, its a sight you should see." Mark turned and saw she was pointing to a building practicly built into the roof of the stucture, there were catwalks running there way up to it and some taller stuff around it on the ground floor. The woman started walking toward it, Mark hurried to the bathroom, finished up his business in there and went to the tower as well. He hurried along and was up the catwalk and at the building at the top in no time.

He opened the door into it and realized it wasn't a building at all. The entire roof section had been cut out here, at least a 50 foot long slab was gone. it was missing wall to floor, and a railing was present at the end where the ceiling and floor would have intersected to the left of him. A retractacable canopy made of the old roofing could be seen on the current roof of the complex, clearly to provide protection against both weather and combine Detection. Mark saw that there were some couches and chairs, along with a few tables in the room, which he finally decided should really be termed a balcony.

He heard a framiliar voice to the right, and saw that Josh, Tom and the woman that had invited him up here were all sitting on a couch against the wall with the door he had just come through.

"Mark, I see you have met Cap'n Jess here. Captain Jessica, this Is Corpral Mark." announced Josh.

"Corpral?" Mark asked, realizing that he really had never offically been a private, and wondering what had prompted such a promotion.

"You saw more today then most guys see in a week of heavy fighting, and you proformed...lets say corpal like, admirably if you want a more descriptive term."

"And with that promotion comes the slightly useful ability to make those masses in the rank slightly bellow you do slight bits of your bidding. A very usefull ability in some views." Joked Tom

"But fortuneatly for you, you have the added benefit of being able to come up here whenever you want. We normally don't keep the doors unlocked, this is kinda like a officers hideaway from the yearning, huddled masses below, but we like you enough to give you a key."

"Now why don't you sit down and take a good look at what kind of a view that key grants you. And we can do some talking if any of us feels like it."

Mark sat down on one of the Chairs. He saw a view that would have been very good in some ways, like a picture almost. It was an almost serene view of the city, slightly darkend as most of the lights were out by now. The Citedel lay in the middle of the view, Its Imposingness very pronounced by the distance between them and it. Mark followed its Asymetrical shape up, And saw the moon casting its light but a few degrees right of it, illuminating its side with a milky white glow.

"If that were human technology I would be very proud of Humans." commented Jessica, holding her had as if she was imagining holding it as you would a toy rocket.

A) Ask Jessica about her Past.

B) Ask Jessica how she got to be a captain at so young an age.

C) Ask the brothers how tall the citadell is.

Well, this is going to be less complimentary than the last comment I left.

This is all still very good and very involving. The description of the overpowering citadel in the moonlight was very good. Once again I could see it in my head as I read it. However, the choices you have given are a bit bland. I'll say D.

It was originally an idea of mine for either Mark or Fitz to hook up with Amber. It would have depended on the readers choices aswell.

Also the lack of action...actually its not a bad thing. I had the next few options set in my head before I gave in writing this. Many of the choices led to the death of some of the characters. Hell, when I was writing it in one chapter (with the strider) the voters just skimmed the chance of killing Mark off! The story would have then gone to Fitz's point of view cos Mark and Fitz are rather alike.

Urb, remember the Half-life story, and how this lines up with it. Remember what happens on the night after Ravenholm, which was the day of BME being taken.

But the calm before the storm has lasted a little to long, maybe I should have made the last to chapters shorter.

And don't worry, Id have no problem killing Mark off if it were realistic for him to die.

And some correction:
the "Ask about Kaufman" choice was just a thought of mine that only Mark saw Kaufman dead. read back to the first strider attack if you don't remember.

I meant to say Jessica was late Twenties or early thirties, not what i said.
next one is being written, and the curent printed version is 43 pages long at 10 font. almost a mini novel

Mark sat there for a while. stareing at the citadel, a sleeping monster at this time. Breen sitting in his top floor office, probably ploting some other way to exploit his Earth. The city still quiet, no sound of any combine monstosities could be heard. Mark felt at peace for the first time in two days. And he relished in that for a few minutes. then a thought came to his head.

"Josh, why did you call the general Mr. Deuce when you asked if we wanted to go see him?"

"Well, its his middlename, and officaly hes second in command after Eli. But our higher command stucture isn't really well set. Right now I would call freeman our leader, I think most people would do what he says over anyone elses sugustions. And Barney Calhoun for example, he's technically a Captain, but he really has more power then us."

"Ya, its really..." Tom began adding, but cut himself short. he paused for a minute looking up at the Citadel. Mark followed his gaze and saw that a buzz of activity seemed to be radiating from it, even though its apperence hadn't changed. "...Something is very wrong"

The sky lit up, a bright orange, almost white. Mark jumped up, grabbing his MP7 off the armrest. The .357 he had stuffed in his pocket fell out. What mark saw in the distance was giant. A mushroom cloud of dust and debris became visible at the source of the light. The sky returned to black, but the cloud was still visible as a dark shape in the night sky. The ground shook, as if a small earthquake hit, and a light breeze seemed to pass over them as if fleeing from the cloud.

"That came from Nova Prospekt. Its over 30 miles away, nothing near there could have possibly have survived. Freeman..." sputered Jessica.

The Citadel sprung into life, the giant wall covering two of its side moved up, and from behind them came a spew of Dropships and Gunships. Mark heard bits of Gunfire coming from the City, which had also come alive with lights and movement. Mark looked over to the three others he was with. Jessica had run over to the other corner, and was playing with a panel there. The old roof started slideing down the roof to close off this loft from any outside gazes. Tom had taken out a pair of binoculars and was scaning the area near the Citadel. And Josh had taken a radio out of his pocket and was talking into it franticly.

"Close the exits, we can't let everyone out to scatter throughout the city. We can't let the War start till dawn, we need the few hours of preparation....Well don't let them go, tell them to go get ammo while you get the damn doors closed...I told you, If we let them start a full war tonight we will get our asses handed to us. So just keep them in." Josh put the radio back in his pocket, and quickly moved to the door with Jessica behind him. Tom continued looking out through the shrinking field of view that the roof was covering. As it narrowed to a crack he spoke up.

"I think its begun, you ready to win it Mark?"

"Ya"

Tom turned to walk out, Mark began following him, but his foot hit the .357 and he stoped for a second to put it back in his pocket. he took three quick steps to put him behind Tom and they both walked out together. They were almost moving calmly, but as Mark started walking down the stairs he saw the comotion that had erupted on the ground floor. The lights had come back on and at the far end weapons were being passed out like candy. Tables were being set up and having ammo and medkits droped on them. There was a line forming in front of a structure down below as well. A man at the door of it was handing out vests, heavy vests by the look of them, the kind that would maybe save you from a glancing hit from combine bullets, but not much more.

"you should get some rest. there still will be plenty of supplies around in the morning. You look like you could use it. Nothings going to happen until dawn anyway."

"I guess your right Tom, how far away is dawn anyway?"

"Pro'ly a few hours at least, its sometime around midnight now. And Josh and me are going to be giving a presentation before we all move out, so be up for it."

"i'll be there" Mark finished, he walked over to the cot storage rooms to find that among others there, were Dan, Fitz, and Amber. Mark through a quizical look over to Dan, who saw it and spoke up.

"Josh told us to bunk here for the rest of the night. So since we had already grabbed some stuff we came over for some sleep, same with you."

Mark nodded, seeing the cots lined up drained the remaining energy from him, so he grabbed some water from one of the Water cooler things that were all stored against one of the walls. This quenched his thirst, so he turned of his flashligh, dropped his stuff, and fell onto a cot between Amber and Fitz. He was asleep the instant his head hit the rolled up piece of cloth that was ment to be used as a blanket.

He awoke the next dawn, The lights were on and he assumed it was the sound of a radio playing loudly that had woken him. the radio was letting out some old music that Mark remembered from a few years ago, Mark thought of what Josh had said about whatever Eli had made for the watter countering the Combines memeory stuff in it. And so he mumbled the words to himself as he grabbed his stuff and tie his shoe, which he had just noticed had come undone. "...Think about the chance I never had to say, Thank you for giving up your life that day. Never fearing, only hearing voices calling out. Let it all go, the life that you know." Mark considered waking the other 3 up, but saw that Amber was already doing so, so he continued giveing the song some lip."...You were strong and you belived. Everything is going to be alright, Everything is going to be alright, be strong Belive...Think about the love inside the stength of heart. Think about the heros saving lives in the dark. Think about the chance I never had to say, thank you for giving up your life that day. Be strong belive..." The music was turned down and Mark stopped voiceing the words. Then Josh's voice came over the noise and everyone quieted down. A great Exuberance in his voice.

"Thank you Andrew, that was a very fitting song for this occasion. Now, if you would stop hording all the cds, like the Yellow Card one you just played, that'd be great." This drew quite a loud chuckle from the gathered. He continued "As we all know, or at least should know, Breen really likes curing the pain his ass complains about by inflicting pain on us. But we shall soon remedy that, at least our part of it, Breen can continue with his end." This drew a laugh from everyone.

Tom added more "And guess what breen is saying right now." A screen above them flicked on depicting the whitehaired Dr. Breen, still spewing propaganda to no end. The figure was mute though, and after a second of silence Tom began speeking again, with a clearly half-hearted prod at imitating Breen. Mark also saw that Tom was synching his words to breens mouth. "My fellow Citizens. It has recently come to my attention that a group of highly edujucated insergents have decided to besiege our city. Myself, Im scared shitless, I have infact soiled myself in fear. As im sure every other combine soldier has done. I am sincerely in dought that we will win, so I urge you do not look at my soiled pants for an answer." By this time everyone was laughing heavily, but Tom didn't let up. "If all you good citizens would cease staring at the rebels for an answer to the problem of my soiled pants. These people are nothing but people who have decided to be Trick'sy and make me scared." The entire congregation of people was emptying their lungs quicker then they could brethe. Breen turned as he ending his accuall speach, but Mark noticed that the screen frame froze once Breens face wasn't viewable anymore.

"What is that smell?" said Tom, still in his Breen voice.

"Sir I think you should see this!" Replied Josh

"What is it?" Shot back Tom

"Its a big'un sir!"

"My God, flush that thing down the can already!"

"I tried sir, it just clogged, so I tried a few more times!"

"What do you mean, how the hell did this happen?"

"I think its the rebels sir, they must have sabotauged it."

"the Rebels! here? Oh damn, I think I just soiled myself again..."

"don't wory sir, i'll get you a clean diaper!" Finished Josh. The screen went dark, and the sounds of laughter died down in the croud.

Tom and Josh spoke up together. "Thank you, Thank you, now may we give you our great general, John Stalin."

John walked up onto the stage. His tone was more somber then the twins, but still quite uplifting. The last of the laughter died down almost immediatly after his first word.

"Ok...The day has come for us to finish everything we ever started. There may be failures of some of us, but we would emerge victorious under any conditions. Now I need you all to get In your assigned squads and get your orders from your squad leaders. After that well open the doors and we can all go on our passionate way. And make sure to grab any supplies you don't have on the way out."

Mark had no clue what squad he was in, nobody had told him.

A) Ask, Amber, Dan, and Fitz if they know.

B) Follow the three, and just stick with them.

C) Wait by the exits and just join a random group.

Best. Chapter. Ever.

Only thing i'd say - you should have made a bigger point of how the water helped mark regain some of his memory. The song was a nice way to explain this but you might have gone into a bit more detail.

Nicely done. I got another of those images for a moment. Mark crouching down in the middle of a dark and dingey room next to his sleeping friends with a battered sterio system crackling away. I even imagined the music coming through to be frazzeled and tinny. Nice work. The pre-battle tension comes through rather well.

B)

The other 2 options mean that there's a possiblility Mark will get drafted in with some other group. Remember what happened last time with Captain Holden? Pfft.

Oh wait, he was my character. I'd almost forgotten.
