What now WHAT NOW you ask well!

Because Hammer crashes everytime I put a prop in (for hl2 only, not hl2dm etc)

I had to map in hl2dm!
I placed a hevhint entity in my map, compiled it and it refuses to compile it by just staying on vbsp.exe :/

So i closed it, opened HL2 and everytime i open my map it closes hammer without saying anything!

HELP!

The thing is:

It only does it with this map so I tried making a .map, I copied the writing from the .txt and made a new .vmf!

There is something in my map that the SDK doesn't like and thus closes!
I think and this is a big think! I believe it might be my env_hudhint because when I compiled it refused to do so so I removed it and it worked.
I thought it must not be compiling because I was mapping in HL2DM so I saved with the env_hudhint still in and closed it. I reopened it in Hammer (HL2) and it loads, but then it just closes like poof!

I decompiled the map bsp and it works fine except now all the faces are bloody busted so I can't use that!

Is it possible to delete the hudhint entity using notepad?

Please I worked really hard on this project and I don't want to lose it :(

Try opening the .MAP and/or .VMF in Notepad and have a fiddle. Back it up first, obviously.

i'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Steam is the first of it's kind and has every right to be a buggy piece of shoe. you can't say it sucks because there's nothing to compare it too. it's the most secure way for valve to get their new stuff to the community and it also lets us know that theres a 100% guarantee that no virus is gonna find it's way onto our pc's just so that we can stay up to date. I know it's great, you guys know it's great. it's just very easy to lose patience with.
And on an even lighter note, it means valve can create and release extra areas of half life 2 cough lost coast.cough for free.

remember, steam can't be buggy forever :)

Sure there's something to compare it with ? the way games traditionally have been. Standalone.

Take into account the updating system of standalone games as well (or the lack of one). Steam isn't fantastic, I'll admit that, but it is still a decent to good means of distrubution.

Get a better connection then. I'm on 33k and I don't mind, and I'm still updating the GOTY version of HL1 (which includes 6 other games) from scratch.

I got 2MB cable and yet the amount of content they ask us to download is unfair!

Not really. The recent update for CS:S is a prime example of this. You downloaded through that update:

1. Two new maps
2. New prop models
3. New materials
4. New CT models
5. Engine updates
6. Other stuff

That's quite a fair bit.

Dude, it's fine on 3mbit cable, it's gotta be fine on 2mbit cable.

I'm with Ant - You pay the price for what you play to stay updated. New models, materials, levels, and core updates to the game are well worth it.

Oh, why did you have a hudhint in MP anyhoo ;|?

I can't map in HL2 as it crashes everytime I put a prop in it but if I map in HL2DM then it doesn't crash and so I have to copy the .bsp over to the HL2 folders but even Hammer refuses to compile a DM map with a hud hint in it which I was going to copy over to HL2 instead of HL2DM!

Bah don't you remember I made a topic about this but nothing worked so I gave up and it's not a huge problem!

All I have to do is change configs :P
