does it mater if you make a map and complete it and then compile at the end or is it better to compile as you go and edit any time you like, sorry if I dont seem familiar with all of this but Im new to all this (Virgin maper LoL)

Well if you only compile in the end you will only then discover that there are problems and if you will compile too many times you will be tired and you will stop building that map(if it is a long or detaild one), it happend too me already. :(

I'm almost finished but I get stuck in all the little ditails, like computers blowing up nicely and haching eggs. : Maybe cause I put too many details, I have a map that you enter an aliany kindergurten that wants to take over the world and I even created the elctricity wire that brings power to the building.

One couldn't possibly make a proper map without compiling during development.

Thousand unfinished!!!
LOL...
I have 238 unfinished maps languishing in various stages of unfinishedness :-)
I have only released (to the public) 3 full HL Based levels in 5 years...
Sad isn't it..
More like "ohh look a bright shiny thing" and off I go on another tangent.

But back to the question...
Compile early and often regardless of how good you get...
Best advice I have ever heard.

Three? I've released two :). Excluding Example Maps, of course.

I used to compile the map every time when i changed a texture or changed a name of a trigger, but after 20-30 compiles the compiler started giving errors, so now i compile the map only after i make it all without much detail... :)

Yep, most of the things I learnd my self, using all the tools. I found some help full sites that help me eith the making of doors, rotating doors and rotating doors with transpernt glass. Until I came to this site and learnd from it's tutorials with out rigestring. When I found this site I wasn't a bigginer. After a few mounths I rigisterd.

i used to compile after i changed a lot...but then i got errors that took forever to fix cuz i wasnt sure what i did wrong. now when i compile with hammer, it takes forever. if you have a really long compile time, you should definitely look into batch compiling. its what i use now and it cut my compile time down from 25 hours to 2!! w00t! good luck...

thanx YODEL185, I finaly got my map to compile it did it in just under 30 seconds, maybe because it is only in the begining stages and has not got many textures yet.

ok, I compiled in normal mode, worked ok, then made more changes to the map and tried to compile again, but no changes to the map, can anyone help? after compiling the map it went dark but still no changes ?

The new map file isn't overwriting the old one in the HL directory. Possible causes, in order of likelihood: compile error, bad setup, Windows problem.

I have noticed that I have a file in my documents folder that say's "MAPS" and have noticed that my maps get stored here as well as in the counterstike folder "MAPS" could this be causing the problem I am having, my settings in worlcraft are for the counterstrike folder "MAPS", should I delete the folder in my documents?

That doesn't seem to be causing the problem but try manually copying the new .bsp into the Half life maps folder...

It's most likely if the changes are not occuring, that your map isn't compiling. You can try fixing overlapping, and/or otherwise bad brushes; and hit Alt-P, to check for problems; and make sure none of your textures are scaled below .30, as a start.

I compile a map every time there is a major change. 'Also save older versions that I can use, if the current version becomes uncompilable, and I can't easily fix the problem: A practice that you might consider ;)

I also have tons of unfinished stuff--not like Andy though!!--, and've never uploaded anything to the 'completed' section, except the last compo map.

oh crap>>> I only went and cut and pasted my Sierra folder into my c/programs file and not all of it went over so now I have 2 sierra files :( I think I should learn more before making stupid moves like that....what was I thinking, I expect alot of humourus replys for my cockup : I will load everything back on comp again

the problem is that I have lost my hl.exe file in the transission of folders, so when I went to set up the config for worldcraft I cant insert the hl.exe file, not in folder ? the half-life folder is there but no exe file.....go figure, should I load the program back in ? seems like the only alternitive.....

You don't need to.

Why are you using Worldcraft?

back at ya Monkey! I started life doing modifications to engines, 350, 454 and even some fast 4's, then I went to my first Lan gaming session and someone itroduced me to the art of mapping using worldcraft editor, of course I was hooked on making my own maps ( like a monkey that is attrackted to bananas ;) ) the problem is that I am new at computer stuff's, that is why I am not good at it, we have to start somewhere, like I said before one day i'll get the hang of it without screwing up the comp to much LoL!!!
