Is this what I think it is?
"Texture usage is at 0.17 mb (of 4.00 mb MAX)"
I can only have 4mb of textures in my map?

from Zoners half-life tools:
Halflife was built with a 2Mb texture limit, as was Opposing Force. The ZHLT default limit is 4Mb
There might be a way to tweak that, but I'm not sure

No, you can also have 8 MB of texture in your map. But 4 MB is more then enough. Even for big maps. And if you DO go over that limit, you can use this compile parameter to override the default amount of MB's for textures: -texdata 8192 (8 MB).

And you need to add that compile parameter to all four tools!
I recommend a front end compiler. Very easy to use. Nem's Batch Compiler is one of those, but using it might be a little complicated at first, so you can also go for the Half-Life Compilation Controller, the one I've used since I began mapping, about three years ago. Get it here.

It already has the texture date set to 8192 MB. It has most of the used compile parameters in the user interface.

Awesome, thanks a lot. This makes me feel better. :)

Bear in mind that you're then stopping anyone who uses an old (PCI) graphics card with less than 8MiB of onboard memory from playing the map. That may be fine, but you should bear it in mind.

Then again, judging by the Steam Hardware Survey, that's probably not really much of an issue now.

8mb of on-board memory? Wow, I think those days have long gone. Actually, If I do decide to complete the map and release it I am sort of counting on the fact that people with legacy machines will not have an easy time playing it. My machine is far from "high-end" so I will be using it as a measurment for how over the top its getting. We shall see.

I've been using 16 and 32 texture memory limits in some of my HL1 maps and I never got any problems. (I think one person couldn't run it.) These days it's really nothing to worry about tbh.

Only people whom run in software mode wont be able to run the map if you pu the texture limit higher, and some old cards may go crazy, though i never encountered that problem.
