I'd like some feedback too :)

Spag that is freaking amazing! It looks like a real gun to me. :o

I love the fine detail of things like: the sights, cleaning rod brackets, trigger, and magazine release. All the big stuff looks spot on too.

Your meshsmoothed objects look pristine, except where the forgrip meats the reciever housing.

And All under 2000 polys, which is hard to accomplish with any level of fine detail.

5/5

Thanks, yeah some parts look weird when meshsmoothed.

Congratulations , Spag has won the first competition.

He created a excellent model, especialy for a first time.

Second is rowleybob, he also created a excellent weapon for a first time.

Il post more detailed reports later, it will contain things i liked and disliked about the model + constructive critism.

You should compile it into a Source model, SpaG; then more people could see it :).

i don't know how :o but i bet you need legal hl2
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-07 08:00:41 UTC Post #132911
You compile it blah blah blah and then copy the files over with the same name as the gun you want to replace and voila.

You are wrong habboi, you need to decompile the gun you want to replace first, then look up the reference smd and scale your model so it will fit the bones, then recompile it.

2 entry's in total. Though its probably not bad considering most people on this website dont know how to model.

If there will be a next competition we should probably pick a easier subject, something in the line of buildings. Maby incorporate the texturing part to.

Il post up a screenshot of both weapons here.

Congrats SpaG and rowleybob!! :glad:

Edit: Now I understood, that you got the idea of making terrain with triangles (your tutorial) from modelling! :)

Its not my idea, but yeah that is probably how they got on it, just because working with a triangle gives you so much freedown.

Strange.. When I dled gmax from autodesk - the app installed ms3d 1.7.1, not gmax! :o

You tryed redownloading it?

Thank you again for getting us into modeling, Pepper!

I only started to get really comfortable with Gmax towards the end of the compo, and my model reflected that.

I was also fixated on using splines for a while, and it took me quite a while to realize that box modeling is much faster/easier.

I've learned a lot though, imo, and I continue learning new things each time I fire up max.

Main things I learned In this compo:
-Basic Gmax setup and basic box modeling.
-Extrusion polys
-Vertex manipulation
-Target welding--so much better than collapse!
-Cut plolys to add verticies--super useful! Still have no idea waht Slice does!
-Delete/creating polys--I used to be afraid of doing this!
-Flipping, so backfaces are back, where they belong :)
-Cloning
-Many Modifiers--edit mesh, meshsmooth, surface, cross section etc.
-Extrude edges, which is pretty useful--just figured this one out!
-Spline modeling
-That it's much easier to eliminate interior faces as you go, rather than at the end!
-Maximizing Perspective window--W key--makes editing fine points much easier.
-And many other little quirks/tricks of Gmax.

I look forward to the next compo :)

Slice: you get a plane, only defined by a yellow boundary, it will cut your model in half where you place the yellow plane, mind you that only the edges of the plane are visible.

If you really want a challenge, then i recommend that you model a car, its quit hard to do imo, its the hardest thing you can model.

Thanks alot, SpaG! It downloaded Gmax this time!!
Cheers!

Awesome! I'll start modelling soon! :D

T'is alright, much to be done before it can get it into half-life 2.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-09 17:33:46 UTC Post #133580
Very nice. I suppose the hardest part is the inside
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-09 17:35:54 UTC Post #133581
Not really, i edge-extrude the windows in, then i extrude it down, then i just sew it up by creating polygons and target-welding, it only requires some testing and clear thinking. since you already got the main shape from the windows, the roof is the hardest to do from the inside, and the bonnet is also never easy to do in my humble oppinion.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-09 19:06:31 UTC Post #133588
Wow Pepper...Teh amazingly nice!

Btw are you releasing your M1A1? Even If it's the example one, I'd love to check out your design techniques.

Sure, il post it up later.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-10 06:57:08 UTC Post #133693
Il post it up in a minute, in the meantime i have some serious progress on the renault laguna, all i need to do now is add a chair and a rollcage, obviously also a steering wheel, and then its finishd, the inside is. Il design some pimpage wheel's, maby a spoiler, etc. :glad: .

Is this part just a new block that touches car or is it extruded somehow? But i don't see where can you extrude it from.
User posted image
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-11 03:31:32 UTC Post #133906
It is extruded, though its smaller then the side thickness. It just molds in the top.

I first used the cut tool to cut a extra polygon.

Then i extruded it and moved it back down

then i scaled it on a single axis

Then i extrude it up twice to mucht the rest of the windows.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-11 03:40:15 UTC Post #133907
oh, you can cut stuff?
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-11 05:48:21 UTC Post #133927
Yes, polygon/edge mode, go to the cut tool.

I started this car from a single plane, first making the outer shell, then extruding it inside, then extruded and welded the rest of the inside.

EDIT:

added some wheels and a steer.

Nice, its improving a lot.

And i do not think this is really suited for a next competition, though i believe more and more people are starting to model here thanks to the tutorials. But that doesnt take away that i spend a good 23 hours already on the car, and i dont think most people are willing to spend so much time on a car, and that is only because this isnt my first car.

Cars are considered the hardest things to model, obviously not everyone agrees on this but i definately do.

Wow pepper you're a great modeler!!! It's awsome. :o And so is you're gun SpaG! :glad: Can you give monsters new animations and AI,pepper? :
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-12 13:40:15 UTC Post #134246
AI depends on coding, and im not big shot in animation, you would probably comes as far if you would try it yourselfs as me on that subject.

Ohhh...I just need a model for a mod of mine and give him some weapons and the grunts AI. :| Look in the 'traitor' thread it's in the maps and mods section! :)

Almost done. Just have to finisht the reciever/optics, and stock.

Starting to get very comfortable with all 3 scaling buttons, so now my life is much easier. Oh and btw, wehn's the next compo?

Sorry 'bout the Freewebs... getting hosting very soon.
