Oh, yes. It's happening. :)

I need some comments however, particularly with the lighting: it has had some very mixed reactions. Some people liked it, some people thought it was horrible.

I am aware of the black props, and various other bugs, so there is no real need to tell me about them.

Anyway, without further ado, I give you some very early Abandoned : Source Screenshots!

Post any thoughts, and if you ask politely, I'll send you the BSP so you can have a little run around in it (Only a couple rooms atm, though.)

Ooooh. I've got the disk space now so I may (thats may) start mapping for HL2 as well. From what i can see through the darkness its looking pretty...pretty. :nervous:

The lighting is DARK! And also Source is Direct3D based scum, opengl forever!!!!

Would a door broken hang like that forever?
I think the top should be broken and the bottom left on.

But hey it looks good and darkness? What darkness? It seems mighty fine to me :D

*I am quite the source noobie, so keep that in mind regarding my opinion.

It seems sort of blah or boring, but boring isn't the right word. It's missing something I can't quite put my finger on.

Maybe it's just a stronger central theme. Yes, it's an abandoned something... but what? For example, If your playing Assault--either version--you can tell right away it's a shipping/receiving business of some sort. Near as I can tell from the screens, it's just a generator room for some kind of wharehouse.

The architecture/texturing are fine, just again, missing something. Just a little blah imo i guess. Maybe some more fine detail items besides the rubbish thingies.

To sum up, I will say I think you can do better than this. I've seen your work, so I know your a very talented mapper.

For example, that sample map you made for the Real world Construction compo was freaking amazing!

The little details of the broken window/shade and the pieces on the ground looked really good, and right away I felt I was in the top floor of some old, ratty, abandoned apartment. And that was just something you threw together!

I don't think This map accurately displays your potential.

I am actually feeling the same as you rowleybob, concerning the theme. What made the original Abandoned good was its theme, and the actual machine.

The theme, however, is very difficult to recreate in Source, without using custom materials. I'd like to rebuild the machine, but I doubt I'd be able to texture it properly.

I'll experiment though. Thanks again for the feedback. :)

Yeah, I think Rowley described it about as accurate as I was feeling. It's not really like a bad map, it's just missing something. It's lacking...blah. I don't know what it is but it's not there.

I guess a good analogy is that it's like cookies without the sugar. It's a demonstration of your abilities, but you forgot one element and it doesn't taste good. Find that special ingredient (I really think you can make it look loads better with proper prop placement and more clutter in terms of pipes, and that bright blue env light would work wonders) and it would be much better.

Looks very nice.. Although it could use some more debris... But it really looks like it's abandoned.. Good work! :)
