Im making an outdoor map that will also have some buildings. Im thinking of making a hostage map. Im putting alot of work into the terrain and this is the first terrain map Ive ever made. Heres some screenies. Tell me what you think.

This is only a small part of it and Ill change the sky later so that it matches the trees.

Nice stuff. The grass could probably do with being less blue, though, or more red.

If only I knew where to get that grass texture from Halo.

Meh, the terrain seems really unrealistic to me, for some reason.

I can also see a couple texture misalignments on the grass. Fix that. ;o

And yeah, it lacks.... stuff. Decent start though!

I think its the desert background that makes it look out of place.

The tree line looks quite realistic imo, except try varying the placement of the tree brushes--so you can't see the same pattern over and over.

Nah, it's not that. It's the actual shape of the terrain, you wouldn't see anything remotely similar to that in real life.... not often anyway. :)

Update. Experimenting with different skys. (trying to stick with the original CS ones to save file space) Added what will be a building with rooms and a tunnel in the hillside.

Your terrain looks awfully unrealistic. :|
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-30 01:25:57 UTC Post #130815
How? Lighting? Texture? What? And plus its a long way from being done.
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-30 01:46:00 UTC Post #130818
Well, lighting would definitely spruce it up.

The terrain still looks unrealistic. It's awfully random, going up and down and all over the place and it just looks WRONG. Usually grassy terrain is in sets of hills, or something.

It looks... rocky and pointy.. never seen grass like that in my life.

Just make the terrain less pointy and make those hills a lil smaller... :|

I think the actual terrain looks fairly good for a CS map. Granted, there's some height difference and maybe it's a bit too much (this could also hinder movement) but it's not that bad I think.

Now that building does look somewhat out of place. In the middle of a hilly area I wouldn't expect a building like that. There's too much height difference where the terrain meets the building.
Having that tree texture all around that area somehow makes it feel small and cramped for some reason. I think it's just not a nice way to block the level with a sudden, flat screen of trees. Add some trees (models?) in front of those to mask their flattyness. Add a layer of bushes in front of them or such, to break that unnatural flattyness. Make those trees stulp out a bit, whatever. I know it's the HL engine, but you can improve here.
Oh, and adding some more vegetation with leaf sprites or bush models would be a good thing to do.

Good luck with it. :)

Try a diffrent layout for the terrain is just a square with hills. Try creating a more complicated layout like I did in this example map! ;)
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-30 05:32:51 UTC Post #130838
I agree with Captain P. He sure hasn't lost his touch at offering good advice. :)

Here's some tree models from the SnarkPit, made by Fishy. They're great.

I don't agree with you on the terrain though, Captain. It strikes me as pointy, and the actual shape of the terrain seems unrealistic.

Oh, and Jeremy? I'm trusting you'll do something with that damn atrocious building. Spruce it up with some nice architecture, and when you get some lighting in there, the map'll look a lot better.

Oh, and don't hate me because I seem negative. I can actually see potential and would like you to fulfill it. The map really could turn into something great.

Dont worry about the terrain looking pointy or rough. Im gradually smooting it out. I was also planning on adding trees and bushes like you guys suggested and maybe some other structures to hide behind. And the building will get new textures and have windows. And the tunnel will lead to another area of the map that I havent made yet.

Ill get to it when i get home.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-02 02:09:49 UTC Post #131641
Update: Been smoothing out the terrain (still not done yet) and messing with the lighting. I hollowed out the building and added a doorway and some windows (Do not complain about the building! Its nowhere near being done and I promise I will detail and retexture it)

The grass looks far too bright, and it still needs to be less blue.

Terrain is better. Lighting is... meh. That building really needs detail and retexturing (hehe).

And don't hollow. ;o

and, if you look around in somewhere like a bus dept. there usually like square/retangles anyway..

I quite like it, the grass does look a lil' unusually.

What kind of building are you making? (like a bus dept. Or something)

The lighting is kinda bad, i don't really think the sky suits the lighting level. Either change the sky to something clear or change the lighting. :)

EDIT: i don't get any pop-ups, don't you have protection against them?

The lighting doesn't do it for me, and the trees are still just a square around the map (neither do they cast shadows). Work on those things, add a few bushes here and there and it'll greatly improve I think. A different grass texture might be good too.

I finally got around to working on it some more. New textures! I hope it looks more real now.

Very nice terrain! Now you have to fix the trees. Something you could do easily would be to place some tree-textured brushes perpendicular to the ones you have. Something like this:

No I did the terrain all manually. Piece by piece lol.

That stair tower sticks out like a sore thumb. Just ugly. Any ideas how to fix it? Like make it square shapped instead of sloped?
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-04 01:37:56 UTC Post #139124
No ideas.. The stair tower looks really ugly, tho.
The map looks much better now, although there should be more light inside the building. That door of the tunnel looks kinda ugleh and streched. You should use a texture more like a door.
The building reminds me of the barracks from Delta Force.
You should add some more buildings, perhaps a smaller building, connected to the big building. And maybe an underground passage to make the gameplay and layout more interesting.. :)
Add something to cover behind in the field.. Some boulders or bushes or trees... Just don't make it all so clear.
The sky fits almost perfectly, btw. :o
Good work!

Id recommend making the stair tower box-shapped and adding a smokestack or an air intake to make it look more functional.

I cleaned up this thread.

I'm seriously starting to get headaches by seeing this spam and flame war shit in every little thread I visit. Me + Headache + Forum Admin = Not good. It's unnecssary, too, unless you really get off on causing annoyance to admins or something. (Notably me since like everyone glares in my direction when posts dissapear or threads are locked randomly =/ - I'm really not that bad of a guy) You guys can take this up in email or PM though, cause I'll start handing out temp bans for people who start instigating shit or provoking it in the forum.

A general tip is to give CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM on maps too, and not just go "I can't do better but it still sucks." I think I cleaned up those posts so it refers to nothing in here, but its a good general remark to remember.

Not even targeting anyone in general, just keep it clean and you'll do fine.
