That's three firewalls for those who were counting.

The default XP firewall and Lavasoft's Ad-aware.

Using FireFox and not visiting strange sites is a good contribution to your computer's health. There might be some virus in my PC, but I havent noticed anything strange.
You know what they say, ignorance is bliss :D

I have a strict iptables setup on my firewall (I got a dedicated hardened Gentoo box as a h/w firewall) with a very obscure and locked down network config in my kernel. I can use Win2k with no software firewall and very outofdate hotfixes with no problem :) But Win2k sucks, so I don't use it.

WINDOWS XP HOME
BURN HIM GOOD

Ah, a subject close to my heart.

Anti-virus: avast! (freeware, not shareware, as incorrectly posted by rowley).

Software firewall: Sygate PF, which I only use for app. control. Its packet logging is alright, but not as useful as Sysinternals'.

Hardware firewall: NAT router. WLAN, but 63-rchar AES WPA PSK.

Registry: what?

Browser: Opera(s).

Spyware: Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D.

Processes: the supreme Process Explorer. Nothing beats it!

Startup: Starter.

All freeware. Get it all! Oh, plus I'm on XP Pro.

PS: m0p: there's an article on Sysinternals about running XP in 6MiB o' RAM, too.

I was checking out Process Explorer, then I started wondering "Why would anyone want to know all that information?"

I guess it could come in handy when you're getting attacked by spyware or a virus, but other than that, I am happily ignorant about all the processes and their innards.

What do you use it for? I keep trying to think of an actual instance where it might be handy, but I just can't (aside from hunting spywares).

Ah, return to irrationality ;).

satch: I use the program in general to keep an eye on what's running. Features like handle-handling are useful for when Explorer has decided to stop you from deleting empty folders by locking them.

OS - WXPHome, SP2
AV - Symantec Corporate (Har, 'borrowed' the CD from work)
Firewall - Windows or nothing. Router has one integrated, kind of. hax~
Spyware - Manually remove it myself
Registry - Manually clean it, RegScrub XP
Processes - Windows Taskman and manually figuring out what shit does
Start - MSConfig
Browser - Firefox 1.0.6

Needless things will change once I get my DVD Drive and reformat...Notably the absence of a firewall and operating system.

I'm sorry Alex, I think your actually wrong this time. Because Avast expires in 60 days, it would be classified as shareware.

Freeware, would mean you had an licence of some measure, with no time limit. Pwned :P
Registry: what?
Should I take this to mean you don't maintain your registry?

Er, you can register for free... did you download the wrong version?
Should I take this to mean you don't maintain your registry?
Those things are a con. Do you defragment yours, though? ;)
Seventh-Monkey Seventh-MonkeyPretty nifty
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 11:02:37 UTC Post #132061
There is no 'registration' for either, afaik.

Your avast has a limited licence--60 days--and that's what makes it shareware. Freeware keeps working forever and ever and...

I know, because I just downloaded it, and each time you use it, it urges you to register, whilst concurrently telling you how many days are left in the trial.

Admit when your wrong! It doesn't happen so often :P
Those things are a con. Do you defragment yours, though?
Not a con if your trying to zap all traces of a program, to get a fresh install--for purposes I will not discuss... :badass:

I don't think I've ever defragmented, at least not for a very long time. Anyway, doesn't Dr. Watson or somebody let you know when it's time?? :P
<rowleybob very calmly looks around for Dr. Watson, sweating just the tiniest bit>
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 11:21:14 UTC Post #132064
I create a System Restore (Windows XP) before I install any doubtful programs. If I'm really doubtful, I make a copy of the registry. ;)
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 12:05:55 UTC Post #132092
I use avast!, and I assure you it's freeware.

You 'clean' your registry... but don't ever bother defragging? Get your priorities right :|.
