I am making a map and i want to add in a custom sound i have made and yes it is 11025 and mono and 8bit BUT other tutorials have said that when u place an ambience_genric down it should be a speaker icon when mine is just a purpl block :/ so i do it and then play the map and it doesnt play? WHAT DO I DO??

Well, make sure you checked the right flags, the sound exists, the sound is in the right folder, that you entered the right folder in the ambient_generic, check everything really, ambient_generics are sometimes hard, usually its the flags that cause problems

whether its a block or a speaker sprite means nothing, its just how you've configured hammer and if you have the relevant sprites in your hammer/sprites folder

Also are u using spirit? If so it doesn't use those little icons

ok could some one lead me step by step when i enter a certain area the sound should play no.1 How do i make the area trigger and no.2 how do i get the sound to play. The file is called bb.wav and yes it has all the 11025 and 8 bit mono,ect and yes i have put it as ambiencebb.wav but how do i do it? and this website guide doesnt seem to help me and neither does Jolt,cs maps, and other sites. PLZ A STEP BY STEP VERY SLOWLY(old age speed plz :D )

ok i think i can help (wha me!?!??!). What u want is so that when u enter an area u want a sound to play right? This is very easy.
Create a block. This block must be placed just before u enter the part where u want the sound to play. For example if theres a door seperating this part from the next the put the block in the door. This block must stretch to cover the width of the room before it. This is confusing so I'll make it simpler. Lets say theres a hallway before a big room right? Just before the hallway opens up into the big room put that block. Strecth the block so that it covers the WIDTH of the hallway. This is to prevent u sneaking around it and not activating the wav file. Make sure it reaches the bottom of the hallway to and a considerable distance in height to prevent u jumping over it. In case u haven't guessed, this block will be the trigger (dont worry about texturing ur not gonna see the block). Select this block and make it a trigger_once. Now in the big room place an 'ambient generic'. On the properties for it it says WAV name. If it doesn't, get the new Hammer (3.5 beta) with updated Half-Life.fgd. Select the wav file u want. Give this ambient_generic a name (For example 'bigroomsound'. Go to the properties for the trigger. Where it says target give the name of the ambient_generic, in this case 'bigroomsound'. And i think that should be it. When u compile u wont see the trigger. Walk into the spot where it is and the sound should start. If it doesn't there could be something wrong with the WAV file, i cant help u there. I hope this helps if it doesn't, well, um, be clearer next time!!! :P

THX anthony ill try that now and lets see if it works :D if it doesnt i may go a bit mental and nearly destroy my computer BO SELECTA I TELL YEH!!! and one other thing. You must have all heard of a map maker called SQUALL and he is doing something on his website where he makes ur map for like ?20 an hour or something. Is that legal? and it costs a bit much anyway :

oh he says it took him like 80 hours to do sq_jackass and if u think about it that 80 * ?20 which = U HAVE TO RICH TO AFFORD THAT LUMP OF CRAP!!!

THANKS ANTHONY it worked but there is still a problem :P It plays when i enter the area but when i kill myself or the round ends and i enter the area it will never play :/ it only plays once hroughout the whole gameplay unless i change map then change it back to it again :/ which is pointless. SOMEONE PLZ HELP ME ON THIS ONE!!!

Just make the triggering brush a trigger_multiple instead of a trigger_once. Sorry if that sounds patronising, it's not meant to; easy mistake, I always do it myself :)

In fact, Anthony, why not do a tutorial on this? I was going to, working with kol, and I can now it's the xmas holidays, but mebbe you want a go? I've done one (more maybe, can't remember, lol) before and I'll do it if you don't want to, or if kol wants me to ;)

Shud do. It might play whenever you go through (more than once a round) though - you'll have to try ;)

ANOTHER PROBLEM i have a fence but when i play on the map it has bull bits all over it :/ when i want it to be transparent to make it look COOL :D and this is the same map im working with the sound. I can do the sound now anyway. I will prob send the map into here when it is finished CHAMONE.

are you fully running all of the stuff such as VIS, RAD, BSP ...ETC, i think vis is the culprit, though i'am not sure.

lol kol hes saying in simple words and with no playing with words: DO A TUTORIAL ON SOUNDS AND SEND IT IN TO TWHL SO OTHERS CAN USE IT. :P thanks everyone i can make fences and do the sounds and ill send my very first map in to here and prob Jolt as well. It is called BurlyBrawl cough not MATRIX cough :D im in the middle stages atm and it is my first map so when its finished dont CRITISIZE me :D CHAMONE CHECK CHECK THE MONE THATS RIGHT OII

OK I'll try but i haven't tried making sounds yet. Also i've started a brand spanking new map....second map lets see how i do!!
