I was replaying HL earlier today, and it gradually came to my attention that a lot of the mistakes made weren't major, bad just down-right stupid.

This was quite likely down to lack of testing (due to lack of time) by the HL team and maybe pure ignorance... but away... i just wondered what the worst bit of mapping [i]you[/] have found playing HL?

I'll start: a poster placed about 10 units away from the wall. I know its definately not the worst in the game, but its a start!

Xen is the worst mistake...it's so blocky...ick... :aghast: ...they should have spent more time on it... : In opfor though it looks much better! :)

yeah... also terrible texture allignment in places... well actually... everywhere. its like they thought "oh crap... the game's too short. oh well... lets add an entire new world in less than a day!"

alexb911 you should start playing Half-Life in OpenGL. :tired:

and everyone knows hl1 has tons of mapping mistakes but do not forget they were mapping in 1997-98 ...And they were not using the latest VHE +they were using the first 3D un-sprite models+Lighting+Entity+...much more...It must been hard to get use to these in 1998...Did you ever played DOOM in those ages. You cant jump, you cannot reload, only red, blue, green, white lights,as entity only door and button. And all monsters 2D..
In conclusion ,plz stop posting these kinda threads.

Wrong quake 1 is the first to use models! After it came hexen 2, blood 2...and many more games. It might be the first that uses both sprites and models but I myself prefer quake2's exploitions, wallpuffs and lightning.(well sometimes)

Doom was the first game with lightning.(I think) But the lightning was based on areas.(a bright area, dark area)

Yeah, the pic works now (probebly a server restart)

I can't remember HL, but I do remember that Xen looked a bit cheap.

If you search for such things, you'll find them. In every game. It's funny to see some sometimes and speedrunners are often very good at finding more 'rewarding' problems in maps.

Personally, I think it's no big deal. If the overall game plays nice and if those misalignments aren't really distracting or disturbing, then it's no problem. Most player will not play searching for things like this. Some people even say the devil is in the detail, meaning that spending too much time on details and fixing this sort of 'problems' may harm the overall project because more important issues don't get the time they deserve.

As for Xen, I think it looked best in Blueshift. HL's Xen didn't look so good to me and I think it wasn't worked out as well as the rest of the game either. HL was a realistic-feeling game and the sudden change to an unrealistic world didn't really feel fitting to me.

@ Saco:  Whoa man, calm down

@ Every1: Im just talking about stupid mistakes. Not the 'glitches' that allow speedrunners to 30sec a map. The image I posted is soo obvious to any tester, but im not talking about the quality of the game, etc. sorry for misunderstanding!

alex, I see anything from these 'stupid mistakes' to 'glitches' as not so important. Nobody is ever going to create a perfect, flawless map and that's not the goal of a game either. I understand you want to know what sort of these mistakes we found, so I gave my opinion about them because I don't think they're important to find. :)

I think Alex just want to proove something of himself. Some people strive to find anything wrong with what someone says or does...

yes, its interesting to find mistakes, but it doesn't really matter...

so obviously, I agree with Captain P.
