This was mentioned a little over a year ago, and I'm wondering what everyone thinks. My thoughts:

-Models are relatively small file sizes, so bandwith/space shouldn't be a huge issue.
-They're much more useful than a prefab that anyone can make...
-TWHL user-created models only, so it would be almost impossible to flood it with trash, methinks.

What do you all think?

They'll get overused just like prefabs are as you can see in the current HL2 maps, but it might be nice to give a place for modellers to put their stuff in to encourage it somewhat. Might be a nice way to teach people how to model as well.

Alternately, there's the links page that could do with some links to model resource sites.

It was also mentioned in TWHL3 thread methinks. And i agree with Captain P.

Hm. An interesting idea, having made my first HL model now :).

It would be indeed a good idea.

I think it's a great idea. There aren't as many modelers as mappers so it wont be spammed alot! :)

Now I can put my models somewhere! :o

Twas discussed many, many, many times before..
Anyway - it would be cool to have such a section, imo.. :)

Random bits can go in the MV imo, still. How 'bout a new area and we just make the link the file vault or something.

Sounds neat! Make it so! :)

If a model section is implemented, I do not see the trouble in making a prefab section aswell...

Im tired of discrimination againted BrushWorkers! We have to stand up for one another! TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Prefabs are cheap and take no effort. Models are something which many mappers can't do themselves.

Sounds good, Rabid.

Only difference is indeed that models are more rare since not many mappers know how to make them. Other than that, the same overuse-problems exist.

Though perhaps not as much in HL as in HL2 since HL isn't very straightforward with using models for details.

Everyone here values your opinion Captian P, since you are an ?ber-80th level mapper, but I must say you're seriously stuck on this overuse-thingie.

Also, I think your outnumbered + overruled on this one ;)

I think it's a good idea.
TWHL would pwn every other HL/HL2 community if we had one!

Still I don't think it will be spammed as a prefab section, not only that most people don't know how to model but also it takes alot of time to make a model. :tired:

I would like to ask whether this model section will be kind to the humble 'skinner' as well.

I'd hate to have to edit a mesh in some way just to put a skin in the vault.

I think most people here still map for HL and therefor model overuse isn't really an issue for them. In HL2, the generic industrial theme and the same props get pretty old after a while. Seeing an explosive barrel isn't yet the same as seeing a prefabbed crate, but HL2 only exists for a year so it hasn't been around long enough to get really overused yet. Anyway, I'm not going to use props that are already widely used unless they really fit in a map, because I place high value on a distinct theme and feeling.

Of course, others can value different things and that's no problem. It's just my point of view and the reason why I create my own props and details rather than downloading some prefabs or models.
Then again, I'm also the type that wants to do it all by himself causing long development times, so my way surely isn't the best in every situation.
I like it however, learning things in a lot of different creative area's, and that's why I originally started mapping, because I like it, so, yeah... ;)

I can certainly see your point for Source, but, as you say yourself, it's a different kettle o' fish for HL.

That's probably the first time I've ever typed that, heh. Plus in gloves.
