I'm looking for a good 3D modeling tool so I can create better and more detailed objects in my maps. Lightwave 3D was recommended to me by a buddy, but Im lookin' for something free. It needs to be compatible w/ Hammer 3.4 and I'm mappin' for CS 1.6.

Can anyone help?

I and pepper use Gmax for modeling and blender to compile the models. Ask him for an advice he's the best modeler in here. :glad:

Milkshape is a good one for low-poly models, plus it comes with a HL model compiler. I'd go for Milkshape if I were you.

It's not free though, but compared to other modelling packages, 25 euro is almost nothing.

I'm afraid G-max isnt availible anymore, though if you google around you should be able to find a download somewhere. Milkshape is very advisable for starters, though it's 25$.

I suppose it would be quite illegal for us to setup a mirror :(

Dont worry, there should be enough hacks and all around the web. Dont mind illigal in this case, they actualy got a whole frickin community jumping on them.

Thanx for the help guys

I'll look into hunting down a "free" version of G-Max, but I'd say Milkshape isn't an option at the moment as I'm not lookin' to spend any money, let alone $35+tx&ship (I'm Canadian and Proud, 'cept of our dollar : )

Maya is f**king good, no doubt about it, but yeah... it is necessary to have quite deep pockets! softimage i've never used, and 3D studio max is at the top - most complicated.

I wouldnt necissarily say that it is hard, it has a high learning curve, but once you get the flow it allows you to produce stuff really fast. For me myself, im looking into blender right now, a free modeler.

I'm currently toying around with the Maya 7 PLE and must say it's great. The 3D Buzz video tutorials are a great help.

pepper, ya, look into blender, it is very powerful. you might want to look into the import/export scripts for it though. it doesn't nativly have the ability to export to many programs.

Yeah, max8 is quite nice yes. Havent tested the peltmapping yet.

il look into the exporters, cant be as bad as g-max.

Um, I'd be wary of downloading Apps though; much of that stuff is crawling with creepy viruses :(
