Map of the Month winner for January 2012!

Apartment X2

(Link fixed 24/1/2012)

Based off the original map, Apartment by [OEdc]ThatGuy

I don't know why, but Apartment won Map of the Month on TWHL for March 2011.

I was very angry with this, because people had done bad and let great maps get ignored and let a(no offence) a first-timer map which had some serious flaws win. Not just minor ones, but big obnoxious ones. It should have not won MOTM.

So I've recreated it into something at least slightly worth of such an award. Apartment X2 is also an apartment in space, but now it's not floating on some f*#king plasterboard and made of cinderblocks. X2 is practically the exact same layout with some nicer archiecture and some serious redesigning. All this was completed in approx 7-8 hours.

Seriously guys. Don't do this to me again.

Enjoy.

P.S. I know it's not an apartment, but that's what HE called the map, so: Screw you guys, I'm going to bed.

I kind of want to vote for this as MOTM, just to see what Urby would do. But I suppose I should at least play it first.

Definitely a major improvement, I liked the space style of it. the fridge was funny, and the "Plasterboard Sucks!" thing. Great map, would love to play on it in DM.

Glad to see you didn't drop gs entirely. Guess it took you getting mad to pick it up. This was a nice little map, clean and simple. Pretty cool stuff. It is actually pretty awesome! What made it play so laggy for such a small map though?

I loved the floating furniture but it would look cooler if it was slowly moving up and down or a pendulum.

Btw, I know you didn't come up with the name, but this is a house not an apartment lol.

The map has been improved significantly. Plus, I think you might have discovered the cure to the infamous 'Mappers Block' by using anger. :)

Detail 8/10
The detail is pretty much on par with most goldsource maps. However, the map is tiny so much more detail could be crammed into it, I know it took 7 hours to create it but surely that bland hallway on the second floor could of at least had a curve to it.

Layout 6/10
You had to recreate the map from another so this can only be similarly bad to the predecessors layout. It is very bad and gains nothing from not 1 room containing a window to the outdoors - I know it's in space but the front door doesn't have an airlock (only the rear door) throwing realism out the window, ho ho ho. One thing I tend to avoid in a DM map is doors that open slowly, especially doors that open slowly with a button; automatic doors that open on approach would of been fantastic and create much smoother gameplay.

Ambience 4/10
All I heard was the overly loud sparks Wave file being played from the bathroom...all over the map. The forcefield that blocked the hole in the roof had an ambient, even that was a little loud. That's about as far as the ambient goes apart from the doors. :/

Atmosphere 9/10
It's in space, it has planets on the skybox texture, a sweet looking shield surrounding the little floating island and a mailbox. Minus the rather hilarious mailbox due to it being an apartment and not a house (nice touch though) the map does give the sense of you being in well, space. Not much to critisice on apart from ambience.

Textures 7/10
The textures are a fresh touch to this map, the textures give give a sense of you being in space with the futuristic metals and light-hovering tables n' beds. The textures are all there but I do feel as if some things were missing like the lack of futuristic technology, not enough screens, computers and those neon lights that we find ourselves calling futuristic in Neo-Tokyo.

Lighting 8/10
The lighting was between 'good enough' and 'lacking flamboyance'. The green underside of the hovering furniture and pink glow from the explosive...crates (I suppose on a SPACE apartment) but what let it down for me was the typical futuristic syle of choosing electric blue, it's not exactly original. Still gets an 8 though.

Placement 9/10
Placement is as good as it gets in DM with powerful SMG grenades being hard to reach and moderately powerful weapons being everywhere else.

Gameplay ?/10
N/a

Overall 7.2/10 (4 Stars)

Note: IMO.

Thanks for the comments guys. The layout was a nightmare to work with. In the end I just didn't know what to do with it.

I also didn't want to crowd up the rooms. If you put too much in a room, it might get a bit cramped and distracting.

This is brilliant Hotdog! and you did all this in 7 hours?! Dam impressive sir...Bears no resemblence to the original map and i must say, i'm just blown away.

Lovely construction, interactiveness, ambience, and just everything worked together greatly! This is the first time i think i smiled today thinking about your map... just really great sir. This would make a great minicompo after 2012 maybs, to redo apartment or some-other map!

Superb stuff sir! cheers! :P

Excellent map, can't really find much to complain about. Though the map is a bit small that's due to the fact you were working with the original so I'll let it pass. The refrigerator was a neat silly idea and I really enjoyed your portrayal of the damage between the floors. Fun small map, has a nice few elements for gameplay, looks fantastic, and for a few hours of work that's quite the feat. 5 starts for me.

8.8/10
Architecture — 8
Texturing — 9.5
Ambience — 9.9

Gameplay — 8.5

Exclusive Video Review:

"I just love that this even exists."

Bottom Line:

There's not a single polygon in this map that doesn't have a superb sense of tongue-in-cheek humour and that combined with a really solid design makes it a very worthwhile MotM.

"If you give nonsense context and a nice wrapping it works just fine."

Bottom Line:

On the whole I kinda like this little killbox of a deathmatch map. It just serves to show how to pull off something ambitious and unusual.

Not sure if "inspired" is the right word.
