Last nite i was installing this windows update (or rather, the update was installing itself without my consent) and the next day the computer went blue on startup.

A system restore to 2 days ago solved the problem immediately.

Seriously steam microsoft, get some dam BETA TESTERS before you install this crap.

Does it occur to everyone that the update installs to or just specific machines ?

Micro$oft will get a big d1ck up their ass when steam for Linux comes out as well as other things.
Flash went gay and doesn't make any updated for Linux.

I don't even know what Micro$oft wants to accomplish with their new half assed windows systems.

Yeah my father got this as well, and people yelled at me for having Vista, ha ha!

i know i'm going to receive flak for this, but i shut off windows update completely like 3 months ago and forgot about it. Everything works thus far and i haven't died yet, so maybe i can just leave it off?

Change your update preferences to notify but not download or install. I thought most people did this already...

@CapT: Make sure you keep your anti-virus up to date, or at least be very careful about what sites you visit and what you download. People who make malicious software analyise the patches to find the exploit and specifically target people who aren't updated, so you should probably do an update every now and then.

I do what PB said. I've lost count of the amount of times I've lost work due to going to get a sandwich or something, and when I've come back my computer has restarted itself.

Although with my most recent install, I set it to that, yet it would still automatically update, which was both annoying and perplexing. I can't remember how I stopped it from doing so. It may have been due to Norton being automatically installed with Windows.

I have them on and they are nothing compared to flash or java updates, they don't ask whether you want to install them or not they just do that when I turn off my machine which is very convenient.

This update put half our office out of action this morning. My home PC wasn't affected, even with the update.

WOW OFFICE OUT OF ACTION?!?! DAMN, thats awesome (no offence) but I think thats a pretty neat update to get out of work...

Yeah, but when you're out in the real world, rushing to meet a deadline on an £8,500 project, it can be pretty fucking annoying.

Surely if you lose money due to a fuckup on Microsoft's part you'd be entitled to some form of reimbursement?

The clients are the issue. They see a room full of people working on computers, therefore nothing technical should EVER be allowed to go wrong.

No worries. No offense or insult taken. Just a shame that had I still been in school or college then it would have indeed been awesome. Sadly those days are long gone, and now I have a sad.
