Mind blown. Too much win.
Brb, need to let this sink in.

EDIT: The ending (along with the last part of the final battle) has got to be the most rewarding sequence I've ever experienced in a game. Ludicrously good.

On to the dev commentary!

A small tournament with only as_ en es_ maps might be fun? It'll be fun trying to actually work as a team and giving these lost gamemodes of CS a night of revival.
Gonna absolutely back you on that one, I love those game modes & there's actually a shitload of old official CS maps for them that were cut during version changes. There was even a detailed changelog on those maps w/ a full list & some great in-depth comments. I'll try & dig that up.

I propose a night dedicated to CS beta/alpha maps (think de_rotterdam, cs_arabstreets, as_tundra etc.) - kind of a retro history trip.
As broken as the maps were gameplay-wise, there was a certain charm to them. They were such a huge early mapping influence for me too.
but it takes more time than a month(not that it should, but it seems laziness is at the order of the day in everyone's life nowadays).
Very true, most collab projects do end up taking ages. I'm pretty busy myself, this being the end of the term and all, so I suppose that one's not really viable for now.
For wasting our times on the server in a more entertaining way, I propose the SuperHero mod, or the Respawn mod(I think both are amx plugins).
I never liked those mods, especially superhero/wc3. A bit of CSDM might be good for some quick aim practice, but I don't think we should dedicate our server for that. That's just me anyway, and I'm not that frequent of a player.
It'll be best to put them up if the majority wants it. The decision's up to you lot, let me know if you want those mods enabled in the thread.
I'm taking the red area. Lol.
It's just a random layout to serve as an example, we'd have to work on a proper one for the project.

For how long will the server be kept alive?
It should be up for another month or so. I'll be putting it back to normal later today (disabling some tournament plugins, etc.)

For now, if you have any ideas on what else we could do with the server, post them in this thread. Be it maps you'd like uploaded/playtested, or new tournament ideas, etc.
This ask for a HLDM or TFC tournament or something. Hehe.
HLDM is definitely next on our list. We'll be hosting something similar to the retro tournament for that eventually.

I should also note that the demos registered everyone's in-game voice conversations for some reason, which sound like garbled static when played back. So you might want to turn down your voice receive volume before watching those.

As you probably already know, we're hosting a TWHL Retro Map Tournament on a CS 1.6 server Archie provided. And since it was rented for a month (which might be extended), we figured it should be put to good use as long as it's there.

For example (just a random layout to better illustrate this)..
User posted image
Imagine a rooms-like TWHL collab project, where we split up a pre-determined Counter-Strike layout (it can be as strict/rough as we want it to be) into a number of sections (6-8?), and anyone taking part chooses one area in that layout, which they would map in their own style.
Since this is a single-map project, the brush/custom texture amount per-area would have to be restricted, etc. to work with the engine limits.

Then once the project's finished, we could host an all-in tournament on that map with those who made it. Sort of a "Mappers Trophy".

It's just a random suggestion anyway. Let us know what you think.

And of course, if you have any ideas yourself - post them here! Be it another themed tournament, or just a map you'd like playtested - go nuts. If it sounds good - we'll do it, keeping the server online for as long as folks keep coming up with fun stuff to do on it.

cs_urbanbend
de_dome
De_Dragos
De_space
de_splinter_clan
de_watertower

We're still accepting new maps. The map pack will be updated with any new submissions.

Feel free to join in and get familiar with the (sometimes incredibly weird) maps before the tournament. Should there be any problems, please get in touch with me or Hunter.
I'll be adding AMX & stats sometime this week.

The tournament date isn't fully set yet, but we're leaning towards 8pm GMT next Saturday (16th of April). Let us know if this suits you. We can move it if there's many of you who couldn't make it.

Finally, let us know how the ping is on your end.

Other than that, GL & HF! :)

We first check their desktop screenshots and analyze each for repeating patterns in icon layouts. If anything suspicious is found there, we go through all the maps they've submitted (decompile if necessary), and look for patterns in the mapping techniques/style. Identical texture packs used are always a dead giveaway.
If that research backs up our suspicions, we proceed to ban both users permanently.

Try looking it up on Wikipedia in romanian and seeing what the english equivalent is. I'm sure that'd help the ones helping you.

This looks a bit beyond what we've been taught in matrices, but any matrix raised to a negative power would probably have to be its inverse raised to the modulus of that power.

Stojke:
This is not a clan match running on CPL-approved maps. It's not as much about competing as it is about the maps submitted. The main point is to dust off your oldest projects, giving them a shot in competitive play just for fun. Anyone can hop aboard a random CM for d2/inf/nuke play - no point in organizing one ourselves.
As for ping, seeing how you're from Europe, yours should definitely be playable.

Soup:
Most of these maps have never been playtested for competetive play, and will most likely favour one team over the other. This can be easily solved as long as you swap the teams after half the rounds have been played. I'm probably thinking after 15, out of a total 30 rounds per map.
As for fighting over kills, I'm sure we can figure out some sort of rule to encourage teamwork/fighting for map objectives. Say, every round won by your team adds 1 to your kill count or something. We'll figure it out.

Psilous:
The tournament will be in vanilla CS, no mods, no bullshit. We might get AMX/stats up for easier score tracking, and maybe HLTV for demos (depends on the turnout). Definitely no CSDM though.

Striker:
I'm sure we'll manage to filter out obvious randomers registering just to cash in on the prizes.

Submitting..

User posted image

Once the server goes up, and once we have a decent number of submissions, I think a few practice nights should be hosted for everyone to get accustomed to the maps in play.

EDIT:
Also, we've changed the map submission date from Jan 2007 to Dec, allowing entries from more recently joined members (a.k.a non-old-farts).
Submit away!

Psilous: Let's keep it TWHL-only. I don't think any of us is a pro player, and I'd hate to see random well-trained outsiders that have nothing to do with the community rushing in just to grab the prizes.

Migrating steam shouldn't cause any problems at all.

As for the system drive, it really depends on what your needs are. I think 32 should be more than enough for casual/gaming use.
Although personally I'd go for more than 32 just to be safe, but that's coming from someone who gave his system partition 18 gigs to work with. It just sucks having to scrap it all purely because your system's not getting enough space. ;D

Heh, had an issue with this just a few weeks ago.

Definitely go for more than the minimum Win7 asks for. Keep in mind that all your temp/user data files (which is usually a fuckload of data) will be stored in your sys drive unless you change the default locations in the registry (if so, do it immediately after installing to avoid any initial clogging).

If you want to go through the trouble, I think ~30gb would be a safe bet. I know someone running win7 off a 32gb solid state drive without any problems.

I gave mine 18 gigs at first, started running out of space in less than a day, and eventually had to scrap it all and reinstall again. Running on a single partition now, figured it's not worth the bother given the already tiny HDD in my laptop.

And you should be able to move your steam apps easily, did that when reinstalling myself without any trouble.

Just wait for the next big holiday if you can't afford it now, really.
I've more than doubled my game collection over the course of December for a relatively tiny price (Black Friday/Xmas/New Year sales on Steam for the win)

I'm sure they'll be doing another massive spring sale soon enough.

I do understand pirating when it comes to professional software though, as there's really no way for a student to get it legally without skipping on rent for a month or two. Stuff like photoshop, etc.
Even though there's reasonably powerful free alternatives, they really don't cut it when it comes to creating quality material within deadlines.
