For Steam, the paks have been replaced by steam Game Cache Files (.GCF). Use nem's GCFScape to extract stuff from them (they're in your steamapps folder).

Muzz, you really ought to stop advicing people to look in their pak files... no one uses WON Half-Life anymore. There's no reason to.

I don't really watch TV, I just download stuff. House, Futurama, Simpsons, House. Just watched "One Day, One Room" (S03E12), kicked much ass. Reminded me of Mindwalk in a weird sort of way.

Movies, I'm not really looking forward to anything. Downloaded "Bender's Big Score" yesterday, apparently that's supposed to be good (meh), but I dunno, straight to DVD movies suck, as a general rule.

in Survey: Violence and videogames. Post #238477
Age: 17
Children: No
Country: Sweden, Stockholm

1. Types, hours? FPS, Strategy, RPG, Adventure, Action... anything. And second, around 1-2hours a day (~11 a week)? I spend a lot more than that using the computer, just not playing games.

2. Hobbies? Does web design count? :P

3. Violent? No. Not at all.

4. ESRB? Age ratings suck, et all. I think it should be up to responsible parents to decide which games their kids should play. Recommended ages are fine, but in some cases they're too high. You don't need to be 18 to pretend to shoot people in the face.
Simply banning games like in Germany or Australia because of violence is ridiculous and nothing more than censorship.

5. Children? I'd let them play whatever they wanted and observe the effects. If suddenly, my kid would start acting out GTA I'd probably be concerned. But as long as they displayed a healthy mental state, I'd be fine with whatever.

6. Parents monitored? Not really. I did have time-limitations and stuff, but nothing because it was too violent. My dad bought me Red Alert (with a Mature-rating) when I was 7.

7. Media held liable? No. It's up to the parents. We can't go around censoring the media unless there's firm, solid evidence that it causes brainfuck in kids. As far as I know, such evidence is pretty rare.

in How to make a beam hit on an area Post #238148
That's not what radius means... radius basically means how much it will deviate on the way to its target, similar to the noise value. Noise, however, means how much tiny arcs and cracks the beam will make. A high radius would mean the beam makes big turns and arcs on the way to its target.

To achieve a sense of randomness, use several info_targets with the same name and the beam will strike a random one. Not tried this myself, but I think that's how it works, anyway.

in Buying comp. for hl2 Post #237595
It's pretty simple.
CPU
Choose from:
AMD or Intel? (Pretty much equal)
There's all sorts of new processors (CPUs) coming out all the time, I really can't tell you what to get. There's a huge selection, varying in frequency (measured in GHz), number of cores, etc.

Mobo
Consider:
Socket - depends on CPU type. Different CPUs uses different sockets.
PCI-e - depends on graphics card. All new graphics cards use PCI-e.
SATA or IDE - depends on hard drive. All new hard drives use SATA.
RAM Slots - how many RAM sticks do you plan to stick in there?

Graphics card
Choose from: ATi or nVidia. Again, pretty much equal.
Consider: DX10 compatability. Does it have it? Getting a DX10 card is a good investment, seeing as how most new games take advantage of it. However, the prices are still a bit quirky, and both ATi and nVidia are releasing budget versions of their prime DX10 cards.

Then again, for your price range, maybe a last-gen graphics card would be optimal? Very powerful, but not DX10-compliant, cards are available for as low as $80 these days. I'm talking Radeon X1800 and the like. They're more than enough to run source and most new games (they do have SM2 support, probably 3 too), so one of those might be a better choice.

RAM
Consider: How much do you want, basically? Anything less than 2 Gigabyte can't run Vista, but 1 Gig is more than enough for Source.
Brands: Corsair is considered the best RAM brand around (afaik). There're a lot of generic brands out there.

Peripherals
  • Sound card? If you have a good sound system (5.1 setups and stuff), you might wanna invest in a good sound card. If you don't, just go with the onboard mobo sound, in my opinion.
Use guides and reviews, like on Tom's Hardware when choosing hardware components. For instance, their graphic card comparisons and recommendations are great. Their "Best-hardware-for-your-money of the month" thingy is especially great when hunting budget cards.
It's a jungle, I know. But there's really not that much to it when you get down to it.

If there's any mistakes or embarassing omissions that people notice, please do correct me. Hardware never was my strongest point.
