I agree, to go nuts and attempt to make a 'mod' of sorts is big work, and took more than one mapper to make HL, and look how crappy some of that game is..

Can you link us to teh Map from here, please.

When posting, take your time to make sure it all makes sense; and make sure you give us:

* The full compile Log
* A description of teh problem in english
* Screenshots of teh problem happening if possible ( www.imageshack.us )

I'll look at the map.

Meh, I have two books on c++ now and I'm looking into gettign a compiler (I'd still like a link to d/l teh one taht you guys reckon is the best), I've been playing with some simpel caclulator style programs, but I need to run them to9 see if it all works.

I don't want to learn coding to make a mod, I just want to learn as much about c++ as I can so I can go get a job as a programmer, or even get an unpaid job as a mod's coder, and get into teh industry like that.

I'm just doing it all, and seeing which glove fits best.

Thanks for your take on the whole thing, I'm glad to say we have a very similar philosophy, so perhaps I'm heading in the right direction.

I ain't a big fan of some people's idea of what a puzzle is, I prefer to not be running around the same part of a map for longer than 10 minutes.

Start removing things from your map (mainly the missiles and lights) until you find teh cause.

you started the map from the console?

have you made any maps before?

have you tested any of your other maps?

have you tested the halflife maps? (single player and multiplayer?)

have you uploaded the .rmf to the map vault (under Problem Maps)?

Start by testing out some other things, make sure you can run maps, and it's 100% not a HL problem.

Test some other maps, try making a cube with a light entity and compile it, see if that works.

When compiling with Batch make sure you have Full Vis selected, and make sure the HL box (on teh far right of the Batch Compiler screen) is not ticked.

UnrealEd may be hard, but I personally love that engine, sure the specs are wallet destroying but hey, that's the price you pay for the best of the best.

Source will be the best around for a long time though, I can't see too many people suddenly switching to Unreal to mod, when VALVe have made it as easy as possible to switch over the Source, I read an article, probably on VERC or SteamPowered taht they've designed it with the community in mind. They've learnt from all teh things that people have been able to do with HL1 engine, and have made an effort to have everythign as accesable (spelling) as possible.

Big thumbs up to VALVe for that tbh.

It almost makes up for taking 7 years to release teh sequel.

[edit: at this time, Unreal pwnz HL's engine, and any other imho]

Most Paint programs have an RGB colour scale you can use...

Rowley, are you trying to decribe texlights in the switchable form?

If you wanna go nuts you can add a line to your fgd to give every entity the possibility to emit light, and be switchable...

(I found a great little "tutorial" while searching after I posted the 'gay little aim map' in teh vAULT..........)

Hammer 3.5 has the option to view the pointfile line in eh camera screen, so you need that to follow Rab Himself's advice.

And I meant he should open the steam installer, and go through the motions, it seems as if he's got this far, so all he/you have to do is strat downloading the games, if you;ve gotten as far as the Play Games window, you can download games...

I hope there's a genuine reason that your Steam is playing up, because I have a friend who is also completely f**king useless at this kind of thing.

Reading the installation guide is like, way too much effort for him, not saying you're like that, but just warning you I have no patience for inbreds, how about you give us a couple of creenshots, so we can see exatly where the problem is?

Thanks alot, it's pretty much what I started to do anyway, the biggest problem I'm having is compiling teh programs, so I guess I might just buy a decent program with all the frills.

I can't use geocities links as my gateway at work blocks them.

You sure HalfLife isn't there? I had to download it and it was there, just double click the blacked out game, and download, CS is a stand alone mod, so you don't need any HL products to run it, if youi want HL it's there, just look harder :P

It's a 2d version of HalfLife, you have the option to download it through Steam, it's about 50MB

Get it if you liked Earth Worm Jim on teh megadrive..

no no no, trust me man, seriously, if you're having problem,s just do it that wya, get the Steam installer and let it download, Steam (teh steam installer) is 600kb (absolutely tiny) the biggest thign is Counter Strike at 136MB ish.

You'll be wasting ya time re-installing, and you might f**k up your CD Key :o

Yeha, it looks liek a great game, people can be too biased, those guys spent years making that engine and that game at least give it a frickin' chance, I'll bet that game lives on as a cult classic!

Do you gusy liek Unreal? I swear their engine pwnz0rz HL, HL2 will give it a kick in teh ass though...

You know how to get it to push you in the right direction etc?

Tbh, I'd wait for someone like Captain P or 7th-Munkeh to deal with this, they probably know exactly how it was done.

Right, where it says 1.5 seconds change that to 0.2, don't ask why I wrote 1.5, I have no idea.

If you need an idea of what is happenign, here is an overview:

Player opens door, sees ak, moves towards it, triggers teh trigger_once, which fires teh multi_manager, which fires teh env_render that makes the ak47.mdl in the locker disappear, teh multi_manager (at the same time) fires the game_playerequip which "gives" the player an ak47 with 4 clips of ammo.

To go nuts, you could aquire some models of ammo clips (I have some funnily enough) and link them into the env_render if you wanted to go nuts.

You can do this three ways, I may however forget the other two on the way to describing the first.

Make your locker, with a door etc. Right behind the door (don't have it in any way poking through the door) create a trigger_once and in it's target field/line enter akmm.

Now place a cycler_sprite inside the locker, this will be the most awkward task. In the sprite line enter: models/ak47.mdl, now you can either, have teh gun lying on the floor of teh locker, or open up teh model in an editing program (ms3d) and change it's origins so that teh gun faces with teh barrel pointing 'up'.
Or you could try tweaking the Black Circles with wee lil' white lines in the middle (also known as Pitch, Yaw and Roll) in teh cycler_sprite's properties and position the model how you want it.
Name teh cycler_sprite: akd

Right next to the locker (it could be all the way across the map, but for tidiness put it next to the locker) place a multi_manager
Open it up and name it akmm, turn Off Smart Edit and click on add, then enter this:

Key: akd (short for AK Disappear)
Value: 1.5 (this is 1.5 seconds, adjust it as neccasary)

add again, and:

Key: akg (short for AK Give)
Value: 1.5

Place a env_render entity, name it akd; open it's properties and set it's render mode to solid, and it's fx amount to 1.

Place a game_playerequip entity, open it up and name it: akg

Scroll down through it's list of guns and select: ak47
Turn Off Smart Edit and click add:

Key: ammo_7.62nato
Value: 4 (gives four clips)

I've been doing other things while writing this so if any of it seems sketchy just ask and I will clarify.

Yes repmac, I know, I do believe I explained that in teh section on armoury_entity's; the problem with doing that is when you first spawn, you can press 'g' rapidly and you will keep dropping the deagle (or whatever gun) until you have 5 of them, now this ain't a big deal, but for the sake of professionalism and eradicating bugs it's best to just equip ammop, I mena, you can't drop ammo...

Seventh:

Good idea, but hold on before you do, or be prepared to include a list of all teh ammo and weapons.

It might be a good idea to have a complete list of what each type of ammo is used by which gun, and a list of the gun names themselves.

There's one teg that fluffed up, a bold tag as you noticed!

If you want the "source" so to speak with all teh [ b ] 's and etc just msg/mail/irc me and I'll send over the notepad doc I was using.

As I said I really want to get it right, so including all teh info I can think of would be great, so if anyone has any suggestions of what other info might be useful to people who have never done this before, please say now. :o

Hmm, not sure about the env_render, don't hold me to this but I remember that jump pad texture being animated, and all you did was use it as a button in conjunction with the func_push, and it changed, can't say I've ever seen an NPC use a jump pad, I figure it's just an illusion and when you look down you see the animated texture "puffed out" so to speak.

Not 100% on that as I've never really needed to use anything like it, let alone re-make it.
