in Security Cameras Post #52294
You could set up a console with Up and Down buttons which would give you, say, a 3 second view from a particular camera. Press Up to go to the next camera; press Back to go to the previous camera.

It wouldn't be like looking at a console; it would be a fullscreen camera view. There would be a fixed time delay associated with each camera view.

It's an event sequencer made of func_buttons, env_globals, multi-managers and trigger_cameras.

I downloaded Glass_vassy from the map vault and copied it into my non-Steam half-life/valve/maps folder and into my ..SteamApps../valve/maps folder.

If I run it in my non-Steam Half-Life installation "hl.exe -dev -console +map glass_vassy", I start with the intro, the monster entities (barney and grunts) are there, but I'm without an HEV.

If I run it from Steam "Play Games-Half-Life/Lan game/etc.," there's no intro, no barneys but I have the HEV.

If anyone gets the intro, the barneys AND the HEV, will you tell me exactly how you run it? I'd appreciate a full command-line.

Thanks.

I searched for 'teleporter' in 'Tutorials' and got no results even though the word occurs in the Title and Descripton of the, uh, "Teleporters" tutorial.

Are titles and descriptions indexed? If not, and it's convenient to re-index or mod the search engine, it'd be a good addition.

Thanks for the suggestions. Of course, hazardous, you're correct. Shoulda' looked at it that way.

Thanks all.

I added steam after I already had hammer running so I keep my rmfs in c:program filesvalve hammer editormaps and compile the bsps directly to c:sierrahalf-lifemaps.

That way I don't have to mess with steam at all.

To get your door to open in the opposite direction, change your func_door_rotating distance (the last parameter) to the negative of what you currently have it set to.

That is, if you have distance as "90," set it to "-90."

BTW, if I run any of the other dmc maps, there's plenty of ammo pickups. However, none of the default maps have ladders so I couldn't tell if that is a limitation of dmc or not.

Anyone know?

Okay, I'm really confused about how to run maps.

I downloaded "oeilvert" from the map vault, put it in my sierra/half-life/dmc/maps folder. Then I run "c:sierrahalf-lifehl.exe -game dmc".

I select Multiplayer/Lan game/Create game --> oeilvert. The map loads. I spawn with a shotgun and the HEV but there is no ammo anywhere.

Am I doing something wrong again or is there a map problem?

As noted in another topic, I see the HEV when the map starts but I don't "put it on." It eventually just drops off the train as I near the platform.

Just in case you're familiar with the fog effect that DirectX and OpenGL are capable of, the hl engine doesn't support parameterized fog, according to the documentation. It's pretty expensive, r_speed-wise.

Obviously it's cutting off the end of the directory name made of your email address.

Some suggestions concerning exactly the same problem:
http://forums.thewavelength.net/index.php?s=ddf73adff184221f15b360c51c3422c3&showtopic=10678&st=0&#entry88693

According to that discussion '@' is not well-liked by the dispatcher.

For your info, if you're willing to setup steam again, they changed it and it no longer uses your email address. You can pick just a login name and that may solve the problem with a folder named something@stuff.somewhere.somethingelse.

in how do u get ids? Post #49493
When you install it, it will ask you for an id.

Make one up, along with a password you'll remember (hopefully), and click "Ok" (or whatever the button is).

If that id is already taken, you'll have to pick another one or modify the one you have. You could try "toonton." If it's already taken, try "toonton007" or something and see if that's taken.

You don't get an id ahead of time; you pick one when you install it and run it.

Let us know it that answers your question.

Maybe just three things, construction, layout, and overall.
Good idea.

I like the idea of keeping it fairly simple. "Construction" covers the artists' and single-players' interests and "layout" addresses playability.

I've observed that SP maps, in general, have (and should have) more visual and interactive stuff -> construction.

Team maps need less visual stuff (excluding lighting which is more construction anyway) and higher layout scores. [I'm a TFC guy] Too much interactive stuff can detract from team play.

"Overall" can address the balance. A really well textured team map with no playability may drop the overall score below the average of the two first ratings. A well laidout SP map with no visual interest deserves a lower overall.

in Survey: how you browse maps Post #48269
Since my system recently changed and I can no longer use 'noclip' when I want to browse a map via Multiplayer/Lan/Create game, I'm curious how others browse maps.

1. What version of HL do you have? [I have 1.1.0.4]

2. How do you load a map in HL, CS or TFC and browse it? Specifically, do you use Multiplayer/Lan Game/Create Game or another method?

3. Do you use 'noclip' or 'fly' to look around the map?

in Can't do 'noclip' anymore. A Post #48267
'noclip' problem resolved, sort of.

Apparently cheats can only be used in single player games now. By starting a game in Multiplayer, cheats are disabled.

After browsing the web and getting some hints, I went to the console in the TFC menu and entered "sv_cheats 1" and "map 2fort" rather than going through the Multiplayer menu. The cheats all work fine doing that.

This will change the way I browse downloaded maps, for sure. Previously I downloaded maps and browsed them using 'noclip' by running them from the Multiplayer/Lan Game/Create Game menu. It would seem that's no longer possible.

I'll start a new thread to get info from ppl.

Well, I've uninstalled Steam, Hammer, HL, CS, OP, TFC, BS and reinstalled just HL and TFC. No luck. Did a system restore from last week and reinstalled HL and TFC. Still no 'noclip.'

I called the technical support number for Sierra (the support center is in India) and got exactly no help. They said it was a "functionality" problem. They even suggested I send an email to support@valve.com, which is interesting because the company is valvesoftware.com. Valve.com is a manufacturer. Thanks, Sierra.

So I also sent an email to support@sierra.com. In my heart of hearts I do not expect any help there, either.

Curiously, the first time I installed HL on this machine (1 month old), the Sierra automatic update listed a bunch of download sites that didn't have the HL update. I found and downloaded HL1100 (which I thought was the latest) and was running it along with tfc5150 or whatever it was.

This last install, I installed HL, got the bogus Sierra update list of servers that didn't work, cancelled out (as I have a copy of HL1100.exe), installed TFC and got an automatic update download to HL 1.1.0.4! Curious.

However, noclip still doesn't work.

Question: is everyone running HL 1.1.0.4?

..running hl with +sv_cheats 1?
Tried that. No good. Actually, I think running the -dev command line param does that anyhow.

But I set "sv_cheats 1" and tried "noclip" and "noclip 1" with no response or results. Somewhere it says "noclip 0/1" is the real command but I never needed more than just the "noclip" to toggle.

Could it be than Hammer or Steam changed the dll that handles that? If so, that really frosts my butt.

'noclip' isn't working any more. This seems to be following a Hammer and Steam installation in the last few days.

To avoid a Steam or Hammer launch (in case one of them is at fault), I ran "c:SierraHalfLifehl.exe -dev -console -game tfc" and still no 'noclip'. (I am running FoxBots but have for years and no problem.)

Makes map testing a little difficult. Have I done something stupid to myself here? Anyone know how I get my 'noclip' back?

As for commenting ... It's not a review after all.
Excellent point, Cap'n. Comments are not reviews, an invalid expectation on my part. Perhaps a moderator could give it a categorized rating review before it comes out of a "newly submitted" or "unrated" vault. I would also hope that a categorized rating could be submitted by anyone (or site member).

Just for grins, I did some quick counting of maps in the vault dated in the last two months. An average of 5/week in "unfinished" and 13/week in "completed." (I suspect that "completed" means "I'm done with it" ) Certainly doesn't seem excessive, although, if a person could only work at them once or twice a week, it might get a little heavy.

My 2 cents worth as a newbie:

This site has several attractions, some of which I can comment on only from a visitor's viewpoint.

Tutorials and other resources
I'm a noob with Hammer. This site is a godsend for a beginning mapper. I hope tutorials, both general and specific, will be well-moderated and well-maintained.

Maps

From the hip -> 90% of the comments are useless. "Awesome!" "Great!" "Good work!" - doesn't tell me whether it's worth the time to download and try out. I'm more interested in why a rating is given that what the rating is. I learned quickly whose comments were worth considering and whose weren't.

I'd suggest giving a recently uploaded map no rating at all. If it gets some responsible comments, each of which includes a star (or other) rating with it, then the more highly rated maps can go to vault consistent with their rating.

A responsible review may be required to comment on several categories: use of texturing, consistency of theme, playability, etc.

in foxbot...won't load up Post #47960
You don't need to mod any of your stuff.

The following works for Windoze XP.

Download FoxBotv697.zip (it contains FoxBotv697.exe).

Download it anywhere, unzip it and run the executable FoxBotv697.exe. The executable is an installation program, not the foxbot application itself. If you answer the questions right, or it correctly finds your HalfLife folder, it'll create a FoxBot folder and load everything into it or subfolders.

Then download FoxBotv698-upg.zip which contains (only) foxbot.dll. Unzip and move foxbot.dll to the ..HalfLife/FoxBot folder which should now exist.

The FoxBot folder should contain the dll, some htmls and a "tfc" folder which has areas, waypoints, etc., to support the default tfc maps (2fort, rock2, etc.).

You shouldn't need anything else. Just the command line "hl.exe -dev -console -game tfc" should do it. You don't need the -dev -console but it's always handy.

From the TFC 1.5 start menu, select Multiplayer/Lan Game/Create Game, select a bsp, click Ok. You'll spawn and, after maybe 20-30 seconds, a screen splash for FoxBots.net fades in and out and bots start to spawn. FoxBots should automatically spawn 7 bots to fill in the (usually) 8 players default, 3 more on your chosen team and 4 for the other team.

I'd like to hear whether you get foxbots running or not.

Nice detailed post, thanks - Seventh

in Map Vault Suggestion Post #47939
2 suggestions actually, as a result of excitedly browsing this site:

1. Add navigation to bottom of map vault pages also ( <prev .. next>, etc. ). As a newbie to the site, I've spent some time scrolling down a page, scroll back up, navigate to next page, etc., looking for TFC maps.

2. Which leads to the 2nd suggestion: along with name, date, etc., sorting of maps - could map type be added? (HL, CS, TFC)

BTW, with respect to etiquette, if, as a newbie, I'm posting too much, please let me know!
