It's like "practice" and "practise", which are both words. "Practice" is a noun (object, thing) and "practise" is a verb ('doing word').

Good on you Kasperg.

Or e-mail me (I can't get on IRC through my router right now for some reason, and I don't have time to sort it).

Loffe, it's not adware, adware is invasive. Opera just shows a GIF at the top, or Google-style targetted ads if you select so.

mop, yeah, I love open-source an' all, but... Opera's plain better.

Good good, I was thinking decidedly along AMD lines myself, if only because they're still slightly the underdogs :).

I'm well aware the graphics are practically non-existent there, but the main aim is to get my family outta my room all the time. I'll get a better one if I can wangle it for when my comrades come 'round so we can LAN, but getting m'own PC back properly is more important.

Right-o, Kasperg, as you asked so nicely, here's Opera's pros:
  • Not integrated with the kernel as IE has been since '98 in a cheap attempt to avoid legal issues (this helps significantly protect against malware, many of which use ActiveX, etc.);
  • Uses HTTP pipelining, which I don't believe IE does, which increases speed (Firefox does also);
  • True MDI (Multiple Document Interface), allowing tiling windows, cascading them, and tabs, all in a single container window - or multiple windows in multiple containers;
  • Skinning (minimalism over IE, saves a great deal of screen space for the actual pages, or style for those with huge monitors and massive resolutions);
  • Adjustable integrated 'searching' from the address bar (i.e. g twhl, by default, Googles for 'TWHL', but not limited to true search engines in this regard - I've added things like 'w' for Wikipedia;
  • Mouse gestures - originally an Opera feature, emulated by many: right-click and drag in various directions to close windows, refresh pages, etc. Sounds strange but it grows on you quickly. Also, right-click and scroll brings up a list of child windows in this parent window (i.e. 'tabs');
  • Decent popup control, which only blocks automatically-launched popups and not ones you actually 'want' (namely, those required by silly webdesigners);
  • Excellent access to cookies, history, etc., for those who mysteriously sometimes want to clear their tracks;
  • Sidebars featuring any webpages if so desired (such as our belov?d ShoutBOX;
  • Fast-forward whilst viewing things like image galleries where the next button is no longer the reverse of the 'back', but actually moves forward in such things where you haven't looked before;
  • Custom CSS to override poor webpages with useful content - switch everything to C=64 style, black-and-white, or your specified style;
  • Pretty much every key on the keyboard being mapped to a shortcut (customisable, of course);
  • A wand, to automatically login to sites if so desired;
  • Aliases for favourites or even groups of favourites allowing you to open sites by typing whatever you've specified into the addy bar (I use 'comics' to open Ctrl-Alt-Del, Garfield and Dilbert, for instance);
More here.

Thank-you for your time :).

PS: That's probably my longest post ever. Yay.

Alex: You could always partition, or grab a new HD and put a distribution of Linux on it. Dual boot.
I plan to do the former; m0p, can one use both IDE channels and add a SATA disk/array if the motherboard supports SATA?

I don't remember deleting them. Maybe you should try in Opera :P.

On the NIX note, people may notice that more and more techie equipment are using wee little NIX distros, things like routers (mine included).

I'd be using NIX stuff exclusively if it weren't for:

1. My family all have to use Windows because most workplaces and teaching courses are oriented around it;

2. The fact that I don't know as much about NIX stuff as Windows yet and so don't feel comfortable administering a NIX system myself.

Even the compatibility stuff is becoming a moot point. Suites like OpenOffice can cheerfully use MS Office formats, and with Cedega and similar. Viva la revolucion.

I beg to differ. Have you never seen a technology news post on security vulnerabilities, standard inconsistencies, Nazi monopolism?
I Use windows because it caters for so much more than linux and performs just as well technically
No it doesn't :P.

Then again, Linux (*NIXes) aren't error-free either. On the whole, though, at least they are free. Not that my copy of Windows XP Professional Corporate was. Nay, perish the thought.
