in Just a sketch... Post #35071
Well, after CP and me leaded this thread completely offtopic, I want to post something concerning sketches.
Guess what! A sketch!
This drawing is about one year old, I drew it when I was still believing that my mod 'Master of Time' had had any chance to come out.
This guy is the master of time, that's why he has a sandglass in his left hand.
It doesn't look very good and I didn't colorize it, but have a look at it yourself:

Hm, maybe you could start making it and when BL returns you hand it over to him. It's better than waiting.

Afaik only func_tracktrains do change their direction. Of course you must build the path out of path_track ents.

in Compo winner chooses next topic. Post #35064
I think we've had this recently, but it didn't go into detail.
So what do you think about this: The winner of the last compo is allowed to choose the next topic. The admins look at it and do the required changes.
It could easily be done via email.

This is something all people who are new to forums or mapping should read.
It often happens that questions are asked in a very confusing way and without the information it'd require to answer in a quick and precise way.
It'd be helpfull though, if someone would reduce this 'how to ask a question'-manual to the most important parts so it can be put it into the forums as a sticky thread.

Looong ago, the env_sprite and env_glow ents could be used for still models. If you do that now, your map will worldcraft cause to crahs. This sux!
The stupid thing about monster_generics is that all hostile monsters will try to kill it. In spirit there is an env_model, but it acts strange too, it often isn't lit correctly.

Good. Now since you're the starter of this movie project, do you allow spirit for it? :)

I didn't mean links to the entries. Just how many entries you've had, yet.

Read my first comment. You could make a train track which crosses the bridge. So the bridge must be movable.

This site is essential for good mappers. This guy who runs the site is really brave, and his stories are nice to read too.
@rabidmonkey777: I'd like to see your photographs, too.

Of course architechture isn't everthing. But on the internet, the first thing people see of your mod are pictures. If they look crappy you can have the best gameplay ever, nobody would download it though.
There are also some examples for good architechture and lousy gameplay, James Bond: Nightfire. Looks great, plays terrible.

you cant see it well from this angle but from underneth it looks great
You seemingly tend to take screenshots from the wrong postions all the time. :) The upper pic was too dark, this staircase looks great from underneath.
When it looks great from another angle, make a screeny from that angle.

I think so, too. It'd be possible without spirit, but spirit increases the possiblities, escpecially for movement management and special FX.
But as long as BL is on vacation (he mentioned something like that recently), we're going to have a problem.

Err, r_speeds do not depend on the hardware. Or did you mean fps?

Good, but I think getting a routine in tying light and stuff to func_walls generally, makes things a lot easier. Btw, can you post the average r_speeds? Just interrested.

This whole thing is getting too bloddy for my taste. It's not that I dislike stuff like that in general, but splatter and huge blood fountains can quickly take the horror out of the game. Image the first time you face one of those zombies you've got no weapon, you're going to be really scared. Next time you've got tons of powerfull guns and BANG!, 'Yeah, I've blown that head away like nothing, COOL!', next zombie BOOM!, 'Haha, there your legs fly appart.', no horror at all. Horro mostly happens in your mind. When you have to imagine things, there is much more space for fear. Instead of a zombie that tears a human into pieces and blood spreading all over the floor, some very horrifying screams and grunting noises seem like much more horror. Just don't make too much visual horror, let the player imagine what's happening behind that door.

I'm very canny concerning praise, so I will quickly get over to the suggestions part.
1st picture: Looks ok. Especially those rounded curves, hopefully not at the cost of r_speeds. The lower floor, with the corpse on it, needs more detail. Some blood traces or so, trashcans, benches etc. And you should put something between the grate and the floor on the upper level, just a single sill.
2nd picture: Boring! There's nothing to look at, yet. Put some signs or ventilation shafts there. And make those lights func_walls, they obviously split the walls and add those nasty edges.
3rd picture: Also a bit empty except for those boxes and barrels. I don't know what it's supposed to be, but if it's a storehouse, you could put some kind of transportsystem for the crates there. An unloading point for trucks might be look good too, or just a big freight elevator.
4th picture: Empty too. And as you already said, way too dark. You could boulder those empty walls with pipes spitting out dirty waste.
The bridge looks moveable. Why? Put a train track there which crosses the bridge to make the purpose for that movable bridge more obvious. The banister looks bit plain too, just add some pillars to it.

For the lighting: I think all the pictures are a bit too dark, make the levels brighter. If you still want some darkness, you could add some broken lights at critical points.

Ok, I hope all this didn't sound too negative, it's not meant to do.
If almost never say good things about the work of other, unless it is really good. Just don't take it personal.
Anyway those pictures look like a good start, keep working on them and the result will be also good.

Still quite dark, but things are easier to distinguish.
You should make screenshots of areas without broken lights. :D Just repair it!

Hm, strange. If that doesn't work, try setting up a trigger_multiple around the door and make it very narrow. When the player runs into it, it'll look like he touch-opened it.

Yes, not only in amsterdam, everywhere in the netherlands as far as I know. And policemen are not allowed to frisk you.
You're allowed to do that in germany too, but you mustn't own more than 6 gramms of dope.

btw: I can remeber one thing from holland, I think. Incredibly good pancakes. I hope I didn't mix up things again. Could've also been in Denmark, it's sooo long ago.

Whoo! Only 600 pupils? Here in Berlin the heavily reduce the amount of school by simply fusioning 3 or to one school. This sux!!! We've got 1200 pupils and the schoolhouse is really really small. Plus: 10 teachers had to leave the school this year. GNNNN!

that's one of the things I was afraid of. The planets.
I'd help you a bit. We could just use some models to make it easier.
the only things to map would be the crater on earth, the rock piece and the place on the moon with the flag. the rest can be done with models.

As for the barney: he just got fired because of improper behaviour.
I just say 'who ate all the donuts?' :)

First you have to upload your image to a web server.
Then copy the link adress of it and post it here like this:
[ i m g ]linktoimage[ / i m g ]
without the spaces between the letters. i made them to avoid twhl from treating this as an image.
