Didn't notice that this thread was stickied. It shouldn't be. Bad Ant.

The appropriateness of the e/o banner in the affiliates bit is questionable, considering that e/o doesn't even link back to TWHL. Considering that I'm the one paying for hosting, maybe I should put my site there instead :P

Maybe if I wasn't too lazy to make a banner for it...

Nice work everyone, we got loads of entries for this competition. We will definitely be doing more like this.

A voting thread will be up soon-ish, but everyone can continue discussing the entries until then :)

Kinda silly, potatis. You spent ages explaining a non-issue on platforms he's never going to be targeting. Any high-level language abstracts that stuff away to the point that you don't have to care about them at all if you don't want to. C++ is high-level enough for this. Only time you need to worry about it is when you're programming on specialised hardware, the x86 processor is hardly specialised.

If you need a UI for C++, the safest option is probably Qt. I haven't used it myself, but it's really the only fully cross-platform full-featured UI framework for C++ that I know of.

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you can try Mono, which is fully compatible with Windows Forms and .NET 3.0.

1. Close Steam
2. Delete this folder: "[Steam]steamapps[username]half-life 2 episode two"
3. Open Steam
4. Run Ep2 (and wait a while)

Have you tried this? This should force Steam to re-extract the Ep2 game files from the GCF.

in Linux, is it time yet? Post #292791
If you want to play games on your PC, you'll need to use Windows in some form. That'll be the case for a while to come, I think.

I go the other way around - you can install CygWin, which is a port of many linux tools to Windows. You get a lot of the power tools that linux provides without needing to dual boot.

If you don't want to play games, there's not much else to stop you from switching to Linux right now. Lately I've been considering putting a distro onto my HTPC box.

Well the 1024 competition is, by definition, small in size. But this is a brush-count limited compo, not a size-limited one. Just want to encourage more creative use of brushwork for this one, the mapcore entries seemed to do it quite well.

I think we should add a rule that this has to be a decently-sized deathmatch-type map - that should hopefully produce some more creative brushwork. Aside from Blitz's entry we've only seen boring tiny maps. You're not going to win a limited-brushwork competition by simply making a limited-size map! Be creative!

We're looking at alternating between smaller and larger competitions in the future. Map from texture pack would be in the latter category, and we want to do a few smaller ones before that. If we get Strider making a texture pack, maybe we'll see a compo for it in a few years, because Strider's really lazy :>

Understand people's concerns about a rep system being abused and not helping the site. Obviously if it were to happen we would think long and hard about a "right" way to do it. Just because it's useless on some other forum you visit does not mean that it'll be useless here.

And I do it for a reason - I don't want any of the rubbish, bloat and baggage that comes along with all the large forum systems. I can do much better if I code it myself.

I don't "like" the idea of "liking" things - it's useless and inane. It doesn't add anything to the site. The concept of "rep", however, shows a quick indication over which users contribute more than others, and encourages users to be more helpful and answer questions.

I've had this debate with Ant and I refuse to associate TWHL with Facebook in any way. Not only do I think it would degrade the site, I wouldn't want any TWHL content to go onto Facebook because that destroys our copyright policy - as soon as it's on Facebook, they own the copyright to that content.

It's possible that the next version of TWHL has some kind of rep system, though.

2) DRM will be dropped because nobody is pirating

Yep, it's just as easy to blame YOU than it is to blame the publishers. Don't try to justify your piracy by blaming somebody else.

Here's some of the tracks in my playlist currently: (EDIT - Added comments)

Toshikazu Tanaka - [Metal Slug 5 OST] - Windy Day
Metal Slug has some of the greatest game music around, especially 4, 5, and 3D. Check them out!

Magical Trick Society - [CADENZA] - Pursuit ~ Cornered
The greatest remix of the greatest Phoenix Wright track. OBJECTION!

Frontier Aja - [Legend of the Scarlet Devil Castle: Scarlet Symphony OST] - Chains on my Right Hand, Madness in my Left Hand [Vs Flandre]
Not a fan of the freeform style in the first minute, but at 1:10, this turns into pure gold.

cobu - [Gensou Shoujo Taisen Scarlet OST] - In Still Time ~ Blue Sea of 53 Minutes
Really nice combination of instruments and tune make this a great track.

Dark PHOENiX - [Arrow Rain] - Plain Asia
Crazy awesome piano stuff here. I really love the tune, too.

Falcom Sound Team jdk - [Ys Seven OST] - Innocent Primeval Breaker
There's also really good stuff in some of the Ys soundtracks, but this is my favourite.

Level 99, Moonlapse, OA - [OCRemix] - Ecco: The Tides of Time - Waves of Stone
Fantastic overall feel to this one.

Manabu Namiki - [Trauma Center: Under The Knife 2 OST] - Encroaching Shadows
By the same guy who did the Metal Slug 6 soundtrack, this is a surprisingly catchy tune.

Yukihiro Jindo - [Ys: The Oath in Felghana OST] - Valestein Castle
Awesome theme tune with some rockin' electric guitar.

Toshikazu Tanaka - [Metal Slug 3D OST] - Coal Mine Mark
See comments on Tanaka's work above, another fantastic entry in the Metal Slug series (the music, mind you - not the game, which was shit).

TAM & Keigo Kanzaki - [Touhou Violin Rock] - Walking the Streets of a Former Hell
I love the violin, this track combines excellent violin work with an excellent tune.

Gaijin Games - [Bit.Trip Runner OST] - Blackout City (feat. Anamanaguchi)
Finish up the list with a good old modern chiptune. The last half of this one is especially good.

Valve have stated multiple times that they have the ability to remove all DRM from Steam games if Steam ever dies. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't do this. However I would bet quite a bit on Valve and Steam sticking around for a very long time.

Personally I trust Valve and the Steam system completely.

I can confirm that FSP is indeed a good PSU manufacturer.

Nvidia recommends a 450W or better PSU for the GTX 460, and this minimum value is always much higher than what you actually need. You have a 500W PSU, which exceeds even the inflated Nvidia minimum.

Also, forum posts suggest that the GTX 460 draws a maximum of 14A on the 12V rail. Your PSU supplies 17.5A on each 12V rail, meaning that you have more than enough to run a GTX 460 on it.

Knowing this, I wouldn't buy a new PSU. The one you have now will run a GTX 460 perfectly well.

Everything you need to know when buying a power supply:
http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Power_Supply_Unit

And to compare performance of video cards against each other (then it's just a matter of choosing the best one that suits your budget):
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Note that those video card benchmarks are ONE metric only, but are usually a reasonably good representation of the performance of video cards when compared to each other.

Agree with Ant/Urby, there's absolutely no excuse for piracy.

I pre-order retail games when I want the collector's edition, and Steam games when I know I'm going to buy them. As such, I have pre-ordered Portal 2 (Steam), and I will pre-order Uncharted 3 (retail) and Mass Effect 3 (Steam). And possibly Infamous 2 (retail) depending on price and availability [of the collector's edition] in Australia.
