First question: I think you add -extra to the RAD line.

Get XP SP1. This includes patches that fix the exploits used by Blaster and similar things. You will also need a firewall.

I found that out by accident when I started, couldn't find out how anywhere either
Well, you can do it in a text editor like Notepad, all you need then is a "compiler" to turn your code into an EXE or a DLL or whatever. Have a look on Google for c++ free compiler.
Few years ago I played the violin, then the keyboard, vaguely trying to start the guitar now.
Or even better, Hammer: Tools -> Options -> 2D Views, tick the second box in the left column (Default to 15 degree rotations). Easier than holding Shift the whole time but does the same thing.
Once you have something(s) selected... click them. Really. Then look at the little white boxes around the edges, at the corners - they've changed into circles! Then drag them and you'll see an outline of your selection rotating. Let go, and voila.
Check if this happens with any other maps. If so, maybe there's a problem with the explosion sprite?
