Forget if I've linked this before but most of the stuff I've been listening to lately is from here: http://vip.aersia.net/vip.swf

...Which is a nice variety of video game tracks spanning quite a range of genres and titles. Some neat remixes and orchestrations, too.

It's not a fixed-width font, so that's out of the question (unless it was limited to only 12 characters, which is stupidly short).

Joe: I'm sure the "new" screenshots of it aren't much better. Goldsource is an old and dead engine - stop trying to convince people that it isn't, because it's not working. (Also, that video is hilarious because the custom crowbar is so horribly bad)

Ant: Worst thing about Source is that it still uses freakin' BSPs. Also, the Source SDK is flaky at best - it is always breaking, never updated on time, etc. Could say that UE3 didn't even have an SDK before to counter this, but they released the UDK which basically fixed that problem.

Jeff: Running on ancient pile-of-crap PC's is not really a good thing, if you don't have a PC that at least matches the power of a current generation console (lets say 360 or PS3), your computer is rubbish and you shouldn't even bother trying to play new games.

Since when? Valve had an agreement with Ati back when HL2 first came out, but since then they've had similar agreements with Nvidia and I don't think they have 'close relations' with either of the two these days. I could be wrong, though.

We've changed the rules slightly to allow mod formats (so you can have an individual folder), but you still cannot have custom code. No Spirit, sorry.

I probably have it installed. I don't uninstall stuff most of the time. Easy to reinstall if it's not on there, though. Mod formats should be allowed, but custom DLLs will be deleted before the mod will be run. This includes Spirit DLLs. If your map doesn't work with the DLLs deleted, your map will not be judged.

I don't know if UAC causes issues, because I never have it turned on. I do know that applications that haven't been specifically coded for UAC (like hammer) fail under certain conditions, and do not pop up a 'grant access' box.

I think that if the compile programs are in the right location, they will work even with UAC turned on, but I'm not sure.

in Can't connect to steam Post #286859
Move the "steamapps" folder to somewhere outside of the steam directory, then uninstall steam. Install it again, and put the steamapps folder back afterwards (do this while steam is not running).

The steamapps folder has all your content in it, so be sure to be very careful with it. When you uninstall steam, it deletes all folders in the steam directory, including the all-important steamapps. So, move it outside the steam directory before you uninstall.

My new place has a big gate at the entrance. No annoying Americanised kiddies annoying me this Sunday!

American holidays are silly and make no sense. In Australia, we celebrate the Queen's birthday! And it's a different date in each state! We have a holiday specifically for a horse race! And one for a cricket match! That's how real men have a holiday. None of this nancy-pantsy "kiddies asking for food" crap.

If those kids had some backbone, they'd be beating up kangaroos and feasting on their intestines, instead of mooching sweets from people who actually contribute to society.

You don't even buy games with OnLive, you just rent them at full price. They are able to remove the game from your account at any time. Also, if you stop paying their monthly fee, you lose any game you paid for. Honestly, it's a stupid system based on a stupid idea. If you can't (or don't want to) keep up with PC specifications, get a bloody console. At least you'll be able to keep the games you pay for.

in Competition 29 Voting Thread Post #285834
Okay, I want to get compo 29 rolled out sooner rather than later. Bring your compo ideas into this thread, and we'll get some voting going.

Some things about this compo:
  • Goldsource and Source
  • Engines will be judged separately
  • Allocated time will be fairly short (2-4 weeks)
For this compo, I would like to see a focus on architecture, lighting and ambience, rather than gameplay, plot or size of entries. But this is just my opinion, so feel free to vote for other ideas.

If you want, you may take ideas from the previous ideas thread.

Once there's a top 5 or 6 ideas, I will put them up in a poll to decide the final compo theme.

Two things:

1. Use sensible thread names. "NO NO NO ..." etc doesn't provide any information about your problem, nor is it relevant at all. I have changed it for you this time.

2. Stop acting so arrogant/pretentious (in your first post). Take less time trying to show off how great you are and hinting that other members are idiots, and more time explaining your problem and asking your question.

The whole "games are art" thing seems to be a stretch of the imagination. Games are the result of combining many works of art together - so a game is more like an art gallery, rather than art itself.

I played through Heart Gold a while back, was pretty good (coming from someone who played through Gold all those years ago). I've never understood why people say that the newer games are shit, though. They're the same thing with different story and better graphics, so they're pretty much the same games with some improvements. Looking forward to playing Black/White once they're localised.

The 470 is about 25% better than the 460. Just do the math - if the 460 costs more than $200, paying $50 on top of that price for a 470 will gain you a 25% performance increase for less than 25% of the cost.

And for the record, there is no blue TWHL. Blue just so happens to be the inverse colour of orange, Urby just inverted the colour scheme in photoshop, or maybe Opera has some feature to let you do that.

I think people just plan for too much - they see they have two months, and create an epic 5-map entry based on that time, forgetting that in reality, you cannot do that many maps in the allocated time.

I personally judge on quality of mapping, not quantity. A single, small map with zero gameplay is just as likely to win as a huge singleplayer mini-campaign with custom models and voice acting.

Direct your attention to Deathan's entry in compo 25. This was a small map with excellent architecture and atmosphere, which stood out from other (larger and more complex) maps as the best entry. If you concentrate your efforts on making one excellent map, rather than 5 mediocre maps, you have a much better chance of winning.
