If you're using Windows Vista or 7, you probably don't have write access to the Program Files directory. Try giving yourself permission to write to that folder, running Hammer as an administrator, or just disabling the UAC through user options in the control panel. I don't know all the details of getting around errors like this if you don't have control over UAC, because I always have it disabled.

Highly doubt that satchmo. SSD's are still way too expensive and not nearly big enough to overtake spindle drives for a while yet. Definitely more than one year, at least.

Over the years I've built computers with a total of 10 or so Seagate drives, none of them have failed (well, one blew up because of a power surge, but that was the PSU's fault!) Haven't gone with any other brand, but I'm sure they're all perfectly fine as well. At this point the quality of HDD's are basically the same.

Why is 5GB such a big deal? These days you can pick up hard drives that could have 250 copies of Portal installed for less than 100 bucks. If you think 5GB is a lot of space, it's time to upgrade your computer.

If you don't mind what game you map for, you could download Alien Swarm, which is a free Source game that includes the SDK (and is smaller than Portal), but to map for another game, you need to download the whole thing. Steam doesn't let you play partially-downloaded games.

Also, why wouldn't you want to play Portal? It's a fantastic game.

Uhh, what? All browsers copy each other. Chrome, Firefox, and Opera have all copied other browser's features at one point. One browser innovates, the rest follow. There is no "one browser" that does all the "innovation".

There is no "stealing features" - if one browser has a good idea, it's only logical that other browsers will want to take advantage of that idea. Only douchebags at Microsoft or something would claim that other browsers are "stealing" their features. Do you even understand the idealogy behind free software? (Opera isn't technically free as in speech, but whatever)

As for the button in the corner that you think is "stolen" from Opera, consider where Opera got the idea from. Have you ever used Windows 7? The button is for Win7 only, and that's because many Win7 applications use that style of button.

Call of Duty 2 would probably be my favourite. 3 and World at War were pretty rubbish (comparatively), and Modern Warfare 2 was a sellout. 1, 2, and 4 are excellent, though. Black Ops will suck, and so will every other CoD game from now on, now that Infinity Ward is dead. Looking forward to seeing what Respawn's first project will be.

No mod folders because no custom code. BspZip/WadInclude as much custom content as possible. Entries that overwrite existing files will be...annoying. You run the risk of ruining other people's entries by replacing models they may have used in their entries. A mini-mod format would be acceptable for entries that want to replace models. Entries containing custom code, UI (potatis), or anything besides in-game content, will be disqualified.

Also: Maps will be judged on Steam versions of all games, no exceptions. If your entry doesn't work on Steam, it won't be judged.

The most important rule of all: Your entry MUST contain your TWHL username and something about competition 28. If you do not include this information in either your map name (BSP file) or mod name (liblist/gameinfo), you will be disqualified immediately.

They cannot sell resources from the game, but they can sell their custom maps that USE those resources. As long as the resources themselves are not included in the download, it's fine. I highly doubt that they can stop you from "stealing" the maps and putting them on your server without paying - in fact, that's exactly what I should think you should do. Trying to make money from maps is downright nasty and should not be encouraged.

Don't know if that's better or worse. It's just so extremely pointless - you say you're going to recreate an entire, (relatively) modern game, from scratch, in an engine that is 12 years old. Not only do I expect you not to have the funding and/or interest to achieve such a thing, I also expect that your target audience is near zero.

And what, I ask, is the overall reasoning behind such a mod? Everybody who is interested has already played HL2. You will not impress any possible employers in the industry. You are taking a new game, coating it in rust, and trying to pass it off as something good. It is, in my opinion, an insult to Half-Life 2, the developers, and the modding community in general.

Projects like this leave a bad taste in my mouth.

This is more of a demake than a remake. And demakes suck. Trying to say that this is similar to Black Mesa is incorrect, as instead of doing all your own media (models, voice, textures, etc), all you'll do is use conversion tools. Not only do they give bad results, it's entirely illegal.

Nintendo's keynote just ended. Definitely makes up for Microsoft's failure yesterday - tons of new games, more info on Golden Sun, new Zelda announced, 3DS reveal, with an impressive looking Kid Icarus game for it. Even a new Goldeneye game for Wii, which looks pretty cool too. I highly doubt that Sony can beat that.

The Microsoft keynote starts in 3 hours. Exciting! Of course, I don't expect much else besides Natal, Natal, and more Natal. Oh, I mean "Kinect".

EDIT: Nobody interested in E3 this year? I'm not surprised, it's been pretty fucking terrible so far.

Microsoft's keynote was officially the worst I've ever seen - full of Natal bullshit. It was even more hilariously terrible than the Wii Music affair Nintendo tried to pull off at a previous keynote.

EA and Ubisoft had similarly mediocre keynotes.

I guess the biggest 'news' so far is the new 360 redesign. Some people like it, some hate it. Personally, I think it's about the same. A hardware redesign might be just what MS needs to stop the RROD's.

Nintendo's keynote starts in two hours - hopefully they're a bit better this year (no way it can be as crap as Microsoft's this year). Probably the one I'm looking forward to the most - I want to see more news on the 3DS.

After Nintendo is Sony. Interesting to see how they go too, although the Move doesn't impress me much (more than Natal, though!).

Yes folks, it's time again for all our favourite game companies to gather in a big building and compare the sizes of their...profits.

Of course, the only thing that can come out of E3 is entertainment and excitement (followed by inevitable disappointment) for us consumers. So let's get excited!

Lets hear your predictions for the upcoming events. Remember that the big 3 will have their keynotes, but also EA and Ubisoft have fairly big events, too. Of course, you can also talk about other companies, but let's keep the wild Valve speculation to a minimum, shall we?

Personally I'd like to see more from Nintendo about Golden Sun 3, which was announced last year, but has had ZERO information released since. We'll probably get some information on the new Zelda game, too. Sony and Microsoft will be busy talking about their new motion control stuff, but might find the time to announce some new games, too.

So; Speculate away! Whoever guesses the most correct outrageous claims gets a prize of incalculable value!

Just because you don't play consoles doesn't mean that nobody plays consoles. There is no "best" platform, each one has their pros and cons.

The PC is, and always will be the best gaming platform.
Because I love shit-stirring, let's knock this up a notch. Not only are you wrong, you are sounding like a complete douchebag.
- Mouse and Keyboard is perfect for shooters, not those rubber fuck sticks on console controls. Of course you have the option to plug in any controllers you like if the need arises.
I agree. But FPS is not the only genre. Third person shooters play well on dual analogs, but consoles allow for other control systems to be used, such as the wave of motion control coming in, the touch screen of the DS, gun controllers for games like Time Crisis, etc. PC may allow you to plug in controllers, but that in no way means that there'll be games that use them.
- PC Gamers have at least some degree of intelligence, having to install / patch a game rather than just putting in a disc and playing from the off.
This is the worst one. You sould like an elitist prick. You're basically saying: "We don't let those stupid dumbass console gamers into our PC gamer club - only smart people allowed! Patches act as a gateway to eliminate people of lower intelligence."

In fact, the fact that you raise this point is actually a point AGAINST PC games - you have the inconvience, annoyance, and difficulty of patches and compatibility. Thankfully Steam has given us the convience of autopatching, and consoles have done this too.
- PC's can be upgraded easily.
They can also NOT be upgraded. This means that PC games have to have much higher compatibility than console games. This adds to development and testing time and cost.

(... skipping a few ...)
- NO HALO.
PC: No Uncharted. No Alan Wake. Heavy Rain, Gears of War, God of War, Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda. The list goes on. No matter what games you like, there'll be many console exclusives that you'll enjoy. Many console players would say that "No Halo" is a big flaw in your "argument".

Listen. PC is also my favourite game platform. But this does not mean that it is superior to any other platform. Stop acting like an elitist fuck and learn to accept that your opinion isn't the one truth.

Otherwise, listen to Elof (and ignore that I didn't).
