in Help! Microsoft has handicapped me! Post #242990
You want something that looks and feels like Windows without viruses, crashes and IE/Outlook? I suggest you use Windows XP SP2, and try not to be retarded enough to actually get viruses in the first place, screw anything up to the point that you crash or use IE/Outlook.

I haven't had a virus in over 3 years and haven't seen a BSOD (with the exception of those caused by overclocking and bad hardware). In addition, you aren't FORCED to use IE nor Outlook, install Opera (or Firefox + Thunderbird) instead.

I used to be THE Microsoft basher around here, often preaching about the evils of Windows, but when it boils down to it, Windows is totally useable and stable if you aren't a complete fucking retard. Yes, there are superior OSes around there (most notably GNU/Linux, of which I used daily for 3~ years and still use today alongside WinXP), but Windows really isn't as bad as some of these anti-Microsoft zealots (just like I used to be) make it out to be.

In short, if you're getting viruses and managing to consistantly make Windows crash, you're an absolute fucking imbecile and shouldn't be allowed near computers.

A 2GHz dual core chip != a 4GHz chip. Unless you have some AMAZING, super efficient form of load-balancing, the only advantage to having a dual-core is having less performance degradation whilst multitasking (or when working with multithreaded apps, but the gain is nowhere near the same as comparing a 2GHz chip to a 4GHz chip). You're not going to see any notable raw speed increase. If you run ONE single threaded application on a 2GHz dualcore chip, it'll be roughly the same performance as if you were to run it on a 2GHz singlecore chip, not a 4GHz one. [/rant]

I'm an Ibanez fanboy
 Ibanez

Though Frank Gambale owns Buckethead in the face when it's comes to musicality, but not neccessarily technique (I still <3 Buckethead though):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cssxcv0xLMs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOF_lZ8v4lo

Shawn Lane is also made of win:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0TyZU8k4lU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5s7uVnaQmU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogoFWACRiV8

As is Wes Montgomery (OMGZ he r teh black):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f402svQhuGE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQRc959Sx1E

Technique is a means to an end, not the other way around. It's all very well having perfect technique and being able to play at 20nps, but if you can't apply MUSIC to that technique, you're not a musician. However, Buckethead does make awesome music, but I'm really talking about morons like Rusty Cooley and MAB who are only known for their technique.

Technique is great, if you use it to create music, not a bunch of random notes strung together. Of course there are various styles of music, and some of them are more technique-centric than theory-centric (though a vast knowledge of music theory helps when working with any genre of music).

But seriously, the garbage that people like Rusty Cooley and MAB (there are others, but those are the two that come to mind) it's disgusting. If you're gonna shred mindlessly, it should at least be musical (like Paul Gilbert, who has both great technique and a great sense of melody and can make even the most mindless shredding sound tasteful).

In short, theory > technique. Don't bother working on your technique if you can't even hear the difference between C7, Cm7 and Cm6.

PunkBuster isn't really a rootkit from a technical perspective as it makes no attempts to obscure it's existence and it doesn't try to take control of the OS, so I worded that a little wrong, however the fact remains that an anti-cheat system shouldn't need to be running at a driver-level (cough PnkBstrK.sys).

While it makes detecting driver-level cheats (they do exist, many private bots now run as service/driver combos just like PunkBuster does) easier, makes updating easier and makes it possible to play PB games on a non-admin/power user account (which shouldn't have even been neccessary to begin with, gg flawed design EvenBalance), the fact is that PB's detection is ABSOLUTELY FUCKING USELESS. I used to play Enemy Territory heavily, and even with PB correctly setup and multiple 3rd party master ban/detection lists on the server, even people with PUBLIC bots would manage to get away with it.

On another note, PB could ALSO be a potential security risk, seeing as it has administrative rights, being a service and all. Pretty sure it'd be possible to exploit it somehow (though I'm just speculating now). Oh and also, have I mentioned how much it bogs down memory usage/performance?

In short, I might actually at least ACCEPT PunkBuster if it actually worked, but the fact remains that as an anti-cheat system, it's close to useless. EvenBalance should take a lesson from Valve, you tend to see FAR less cheaters in VAC2 games than you do in PB games, and VAC2 doesn't have to resort to residing in the background as a driver to accomplish it's task.

One more thing, did I mention that the PB EULA basicly says something to the effect of "by agreeing to this, I accept that PB may be considered 'intrusive' and may collect data found on my system"? As a matter of fact, many people have witnessed PB opening random plaintext files on mounted drives.

Whether it actually uploads any of this to EvenBalance servers or not is another question, but still, the fact remains that it shouldn't HAVE to do that. Essentially all it has to do is check for evidence of hooking and scan running processes and their threads for evidence of hooking/injection.

So in short (for real this time), PB is a useless, resource-hogging, intrusive mess of a program.

I got a silver for "least portals" on the first 2 challenges and that's about it, I know HOW I can get a gold on the first challenge but I haven't actually managed to pull it off yet =[ Overall, Portal is awesome though, EP2 as well.

The Source engine is still looking sexy as hell despite it's age (yes I know they've changed a fair bit since HL2 was released, but it's still the same engine), and the forest areas looked beautiful, despite the some of the obvious lazy mapping (sprites for tree foliage, 2D skyboxes in a few places, etcetera, but then again I assume alot of that is down to performance tuning as opposed to laziness).

I've yet to play TF2, but Portal and EP2 are superb.

At the moment:
'01 Ibanez RG550SA (DiMarzio ToneZone in bridge, Blue Velvet in center and Air Norton in neck)
Laney GH50L + random Laney 2x12 cab (JJ/Eurotubes EL34L pair and JJ/Eurotubes ECC83S quad)
Morley Bad Horsie II
ADA MP-1 (3TubeMod)
D'Addario XL 10-46 strings

RG550's are just plain awesome, they have ridiculously playable necks (not comfortable if you have huge hands however), lovely trems (Edge and LoPro are FAR FAR better than OFR's by far, way more movement both ways, far smoother and far more "buttery" to use) and just plain own really.

There is only ONE virus (excluding it's variants) that can actually damage your computer and that's the CIH virus, which corrupts a number of BIOS upon it's payload, though usually it'll only be able to overwrite the BIOS on Intel 430/440 chipsets (think Pentium Pro/Pentium II era). Personally I went without an antivirus for well over a year (though still checking manually every now and then for suspicious registry/disk/thread activity with ProcessMonitor from the excellent Sysinternals) and had absolutely NO problems. Antivirus software is a precaution, not a solution to stupidity. Unless you got infected with CIH, saying a virus ruined your computer is utterly fucking stupid, and even then, you haven't "ruined" your computer, you can quite easily hotswap BIOS chips and flash them in another computer.

Stop whining about Steam. I've been using it for a long long time with little to no problems (the only problems I have experienced have been in it's early days). Valve aren't a big scary corporation who want to steal your personal information. Stop whining, seriously.

And now back on topic, Symantec consumer products (aka Norton products) are awful in every aspect. I've heard Symantec's corporate products are very nice, but they're also very expensive and they cannot be pirated as they require a subscription as far as I know. I personally suggest NOD32, if I remember correctly it has the lowest detection failure rate of all consumer AV's, it doesn't cost much and it has VERY low CPU and RAM usage (the whole thing is written in Assembler). I'm using it and I have ZERO performance degradation, plus it's easily removed and doesn't leave any traces behind. It's also updated 10 times a day or more on average, at least from what I've observed.

in Water-cooling Post #226411
All of your components sound fine, but go for as high CFM fans as possible, silent fans are always really low CFM and thus aren't really that effecient. For a coolant use "1 drop of Spectrus (biocide) + 1 drop of Continuum (corrosion inhibitor) + 1.5oz glycerine (raises water's thermal conductivity co-efficient) to a litre of distilled water according to Hound53. If you can't get that, then Zerex at 5%" (quoted from a well known overclocking/cooling forum). You don't need any fancy expensive coolants, distilled water alone is very good but you'd do well to add a corrosion inhibitor and a biocide to prolong the life of your loop.

Make sure you use thread tape (PTFE) and good metal hoseclips too unless you want everything to end up leaking and going wrong. Once again, you DO NOT need expensive "non-conductive" coolants if you do everything right. Distilled water is THE BEST coolant around, it may not be the safest if you are totally retarded and don't leak test everything, but provided you have a smallest bit of commonsense it should be fine. Just make sure you use DEIONIZED/DISTILLED water and DO NOT use tap water under any circumstances, especially if you have hard water in your area because it WILL fuck your pump up and unless you keep it running 24/7 it WILL corrode your block and possibly your tubing.
