Uhh, the version of the processor is also known as the core name, depends what detection program you use for it. Try detecting it with CPU-Z (www.cpuid.org). Your version should be listed in CPUZ as the Core and will be the 1st column on the second row of information.

Problem: Wireless LAN is a crappy technology which should be avoided at all costs (especially if you use Unix systems).

Solution: A nice classic wired LAN connection.

If your using Unix, a 3rd party MSN client, or an old MSN client, you will have noticed that you can't sign in. Here's why. I've just gotten word that Microsoft have blocked all but the latest version of MSN Messenger from signing in. What fucking assholes. They've just eliminated all of their Unix users, and a rather large chunk of Windows users. I hope they burn even more!

Depends on motherboard. On my motherboard, unless I am running in native SATA mode, I can only use one IDE channel, while the other channel is reserved for SATA. But I use my onboard Si SATA controller, which my Linux kernel supports, so I have never needed to run in that mode. And Ant, I think you will find that Knoppix's interface is the KDE desktop running on an Xfree86 server ;) It is not unique to the distribution, most distros come with a version of KDE. And Ant, if you have any Linux Q's, just either talk to me on MSN, email me, post in these forums, post in my forums, or post on my shoutbox. MSN might be impossible at the moment since I can't sign in at all.

Err, that included no techinical at all except from the last sentence.

Pentium III = Processor.
Coppermine = An early Pentium III revision.
Tualatin = A later revision.
GhZ = Measurement of frequency and commonly CPU speed.
Overclock = Change frequency of CPU higher than specs.
Pipeline = One of many circuits in a CPU die.
Die = Semi-technical term for the core of a transistor circuit.

Get the Athlon. It's a far superior chip to the celeron. But, that thing has shit graphics and a tiny HDD, so I'd look for an XP-M based laptop since XP-M's are rather cheap, and put some decent graphics and a decent HDD into it. Although, personally I'd take a Pentium M Dothan or an AMD 64-M (Mmm, they overclock very well, just like the original XP-M!).

Well, a 3.8GhZ, ultra low pipeline CPU wouldn't work without extreme cooling. People have been overclocking Dothan Pentium M's with specially designed motherboards from DFI & a few other manafacturer though. Dothan's have the same pin count as the previous generation of P4's (S478), but the pinout is different, so it would probably damage the motherboard or chip to try it in a normal mobo. Just cos' it fits, doesn't mean it's correct!

No, just no. Unix systems are designed for more "intelligent" people who actually have knowledge, unlike yer average windows user. There is no way to really tune Win32 since it is already compiled. With Unix, you can optimize the code and recompile it to suit your computer and squeeze as much performance out of your system as possible. Windows doesnt look good at all. Its fucking tellitubby land, probably worse. With Unix systems, if you have the intelligence, you can do whatever you want to your interface. You can make yourself a 1337 little clock to a whole new interface. Of course you need intelligence for this, which Windows users seem to lack. And no, Windows does NOT perform good, compared to my highly tweaked Debian installation, which we will say is a... I know! Hot-rodded supercar with a huge engine. And Win32 is like... a rusting old Vauxhall Nova with a crap engine. Obviously the ultrafast supercar will win. Windows uses tons of RAM. Whereas, you can run a BSD installation in 4mb of RAM on a 10mb HDD.

Oh, and by the way, we don't use Linux to feel special, we use it because it's SUPERIOR. Owned.

Pentium III's are pretty good, depends on the revision though. Coppermine's aren't that good, but the Tualatin based ones are nice. Pentium M's are based on them too, and they have incredibly short pipelines. A 1.4GhZ Tualatin based PIII would easily own a 2GhZ Pentium 4 (Pre-northwood). But sadly, they overclock like shit because of their short pipelines.

Err, Pentium M's actually perform very well. Well, only ones based on the Dothan core. If Intel made a desktop chip based on the Dothan core, with a decent chipset (SATA, 800MhZ CPU bus, etc etc), that would be niiiiice.

Unix was the first real network friendly system, making the OS of the net. Most of the webhosting population is dominated by unix-like systems. With the introduction of the X windowing standard, Unix began to find it's way into desktop boxes, and since then it has expanded in both server markets (BSD-based) and desktop markets (Linux-based). Microsoft Windows has been defeated in it's own game (a desktop OS) by more noob-friendly Linux distributions that offer all the benefits and stability of Linux, but with an attractive and user-friendly X interface such as Gnome and KDE. With the right distribution, even a total noob can use Linux these days.
