I know a guy who plays through Super Mario World mods and records the entire experience with commentary about everything.

What's a few maps anyway, the reviews are entertaining and he's good at them.

Likewise. I guess I can throw my idea in the mix and get this whole thing pieced together.

If you guys like the micromap idea, we can do another of a different theme or something. ...or badger the admins about a new competition.

On those parkinglot stripes, you could try to nodraw the sides and bottoms of the brushes on all of them, then make them a little bit transparent to blend more with the surface below them. Just a thought.

Ha! You found it! Been looking for that.

Yeah doesn't look as good as I remember. But still its old and I thought it was pretty when I saw it for the first time.

Anyway, I do like the unlimited detail stuff. ZBrush fags will love it if things become more sculptural and painterly.

I've seen weirder stuff that Unlimited Detail. A German thing called Workzeug or something like that was revolutionary in procedural graphics. About 7 years ago there was a game that looked like Halo 2 and was only 65kb in size. I've seen it and was amazed.

This unlimited detail stuff has similar technology that has been in use for years in the architectural world. Even though ts all nice, I still say that animation and dynamics like physics and pixel shaders are going to suffer.

...and shit, why haven't NURBS replaced polygons yet? A NURBS is a fraction of the size of a standard normalized polygon anyway.

... NURBS mean Non-Uniform Rational Boolean Spline. Its vectors with the space in the middle filled in mathematically. It takes only 2 nurbs to make a perfect sphere.

in What version of hammer allows sprite mod Post #280758
Uhm... sprites and models show up fine in mine. I have version 3.5.

when you type "sprites/glow1.spr" it won't show up in hammer.
if you type "c:/sierra/halflife/valve/sprites/glow1.spr" it does show up but the map won't find the sprite when its run.

if you copy your models and sprites folders in your hammer folder they'll show up without having to deal with the directory issue.

so when hammer looks for "sprites/glow1.spr" it'll actually find it in the hammer folder, and the map will also run without error.

Yeah you'll have to make your own isometric graphics and new not-gay characters as well as find the scripts for the supporting movements. They do exist and are certainly available. Though you may have to join a few communities to get them.

EDIT: I've done some research and the isometry you're looking for might not be easily obtained. If you would settle for a more strict isometric view like this...
User posted image
...you won't have to waste that many tiles and the sprites/graphics would be a lot easier to make. The top down 8-way movement scripts and graphics are abundant so no worries there if you choose this style.

...and yes, that is a screenshot of Nox. Awesome game.

Oh, right. The new XP an VX Versions have game script, Ruby or something like that. Its way different than the even scripting to make NPCs talk and give you items, its actual code. The event script is still there, and with some resourcefulness, its still very powerful. I once made a hat system where a player could wear a special hat. That would then change his class for example a fire type. He would then fire strengths and weaknesses and be able to learn fire skills. When you take off the hat, you resort to what you were exactly before you wore the hat, only the skills you earned stayed. It was a dynamic way of learning new skills that involved training and stuff. It worked perfectly. :)

RPG maker has easy to implement scripts that enable 8-way movement on an isometric grid. Of course you'd likely have to come up with all of the graphics yourself.

I was bit by the RPG bug a month ago and checked out RPG Maker VX. Its a really nice piece of software and not crotchy to use at all. RPG Maker XP is really good too if you want to compare and pick one that's right for you.

All of my skies in the browser shows up as purple blocks like they don't exist. Do I need to unpack them from something?

Also, why do some prop models disappear in-game? Like a certain trash can and beer bottles?

On a lighter side, I have a rather convincing bowling alley made. Will post screenshots when I get some lighting and figure out some of these problems.

Yeah perhaps, at least it would concrete the concept of running for beer. However I think I need to figure out how to get things working differently for the return trip, or perhaps make two maps of it which would simplify quite a bit.

Also, on the google map, the large build near the storage is a bowling alley. I think I'll be using that as the "Beerfort" if I can get it built right, like make it look more like a stronghold fort with more improvised parts, a custom sign that doesn't look so tacky, and a better safe room. Will post more upon developement.
