Also. You can just create all the brushes, setup one glass entity, hit the nifty "copy" button, and just use the also nifty "Ctrl+T" hot key to tie to entities to save you more time.
Keep the Properties window open, just select something, CTRL-T, paste, Rinse and repeat.

So before and after the last compo i was working on a little proof of concept/ project just to give me something to do.

I thought to myself "Hey why don't I try to re-create the original Zelda using the vanilla resources available in HL2:EP2?!"

So I began.

Naturally, Half life doesn't feature Octoroks, Moblins, Skeletons, Slimes, Generic Arrow-shooting-enemies, three-headed fireball-spitting dragons; so I had to improvise and substitute as close as possible.

I made the spawn area, and the path onwards to the first dungeon. I have created the first dungeon (still working on the boss) and it's been an incredible learning experience.

I had to develop a system to handle keys, conditional triggering, special parenting, minimap creation... ect
All built using hammer.
I'm still working on a way to display your key count and eventually implement a money system, but those goals are for later.

Level 2-
Driving to work
Omg there must have been a massive global pandemic overnight
Everyone is a zombie and the roads are cluttered with smashed cars and corpses.
A car is has even found itself smashed up inside a substation. You should probably be a good samaratin and get power back online.

Level 3-
You arrive at work. You're late. The boss wishes to see you.
You arrive at your bosses office.
The door opens.
There stands g man conversing with a vortiguant.
Xen2 send words of an incoming armada.
You're assigned frontline duty for home defence.

Level 4-

You're teleported to area 51 and outfitted with the newest model crowbar5000 reinforced carbon steel. And of course the handy dandy gravity gun

Level 5-
While waiting for the impending alien armada, you're chatting with one of the soldiers. He explains how he was originally from south Philly. He spent most of his childhood days on the playground. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared and said "you're moving in with your auntie and uncle in bel-air"

C and D zoom. Useful for mapping on a laptop without a mouse.
Shift+drag copying = amazing
Alt+right-click for texture alignment = godlike
Ctrl+I for flipping selection vertically (in current viewport)
Ctrl+L or horizontal flipping
Everyone knows Ctrl-p right?
Ctrl-a for autosizing view ports
Shift-z for maximizing current viewport
Z locks the camera and allows for panning with the mouse.
So if your view ever goes haywire hit z and see of that solves it.
Tools>> show connections: draws gray line in 2d view connecting entities to ther targets. Just wished it worked in 3D view.

For source, pressing x in the 3d view allows for scaling and movement in the 3d window.

Im PRAYING Valve takes some notes from the UDK devs so i can mod HL3 easily when i comes out. I like the idea of Half life and really like all you guys here so i don't want to move away from it!

each level has its own path_corner named say, floor_#
each button targets a MM that does the trigger changetarget for the elevator, linking it to the floor, then after a delay, activates the elevator

I'm pretty sure hint brushes cut up geometry but i cant be certain. Its best to experiment methinks. turn on wireframe and see if you can tell the difference between having them or not.

And i do agree that the engine is coming up on 15 years old so our computers really shouldnt have any problems with the map either way.

My color correction wasn't working, the fade in/fade out didn't fade.
everything immediately snapped to a dark violet/bright white highlight when i entered the fade area, and THEN faded into the color correction.
Couldn't fix it so its staying how it is.

Also i just ran a bot test last night, and it seems the T's have the advantage 2:1. gotta tweak that.

Still some more detail work that needs to be done, as well as a final compile, getting the overlay's to work, adding in more round-start cameras, ambiance, and tweak the 3Dskybox a bit more. I've followed the FPSBanana tutorial on custom overlays to the T but my overlay is shifted off center and fiddling with the text file has no effect on it- it could be my VMF settings but I ran out of time to test everything's wanted to last night.

Anyone have any hints on custom overlays?

I SHOULD be in on time- depending on the overlays and whether or not pakrat works for me.

I need to learn how to do an overview for source..
So right now, my map COULD be complete. Skybox is done, it's leak free. the lighting is decent..
I'm at a comfortable spot where i can just fill in the finishing touches for the last couple days, run a full compile, and then post!
i've never been 'done' early before. damn this is a new feeling of relief.
