Any old map that you didn't work on will obviously seem daunting to you since you don't know anything about it and how it was made.

Anyway I recall reading on Kotaku that the developers of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed were saddened when they read a lot bad of bad reviews criticising their game. They went on about how they worked hard on it so Kotaku replied with something along the lines of it isn't how much effort you put in, they put the game out there for criticism and they got it.
SO I believe you don't have to be a good mapper to judge a mod. On Interlopers a student asked the community to test his 3rd year mod and asked us to fill in a questionnaire. I gave him all the feedback I could and it helped him a lot and yet I haven't released a single mod (yet ;).)

So there's no way around using conveyor? If there isn't a fix then you may have to choose between conveyor water and this lighting glitch. The only stupid idea I can think of is to darken the actual textures in PS.

Compiling models for Source is a little daunting if you haven't made custom textures before. You need to know about VMT's VTF's and when it comes to exporting the model, you need the actual model in .SMD format, the collision model if you want it and the animation model which you need for any model even if it isn't moving. It still needs an idle frame set to 1 that loops.
