Premise: You have 7 days to construct the most bad-ass looking Nether Portal you can make. This means fire, decorations, and anything to make it look like a true gate to hell. Submit screenshots when finished.

It can be rather addictive. I find myself playing it more than the $60 retail games I buy.

@DiscoStu: Making that in the free build version is nothing. You just have to click on a block and it's gone. It takes REAL dedication to do that in the full version, when destroying a block can take up to a couple of seconds each.

I'm working on something like that.

I'm strip mining one map straight down to the adminium w/ a series of floating islands connected by railroads.

It's a LOOOOOOOOOONG process.

I'm mainly playing a new map using the Millénaire mod, which creates villages that u can trade with and help them build up.

It's called Minecraft X-ray. You can explore your world (only that which you have rendered in game) and see what's below the surface. It can also highlight all the key blocks (coal, redstone, obsidian, diamond, etc.) to you can see where deposits are. I just used FRAPS to record it.

For those that don't know, the latest Minecraft release allows you to customize the randomly generated worlds by setting the seed that's used for the generation yourself.

On that note, I thought it might be interesting to see what comes when we use our usernames as the seeds.

I got a rather unimpressive surface but the underground is crazy.

Afaik, we don't have anything like those in Canada. Supposedly the reason for this is ironic. It's been somewhat effective in the US at reducing piracy, but it won't come to Canada, BECAUSE we have piracy. :(

I'm not sure where you're getting your parts from Unbreakable, but as a fellow Canadian, I can tell you, my build was ~$1600 last May.

Coolermaster HAF 922...............$155
Corsair 850W PSU...................$150
LG Lightscribe DVDRW................$30
Corsair DDR2-800 4GB................$60
WD Cavair 640GB.....................$85
EVGA 750I SLi FTW..................$190
XFX GTX 285........................$385
Core 2 Duo E8400...................$200
Total............................~$1255 + tax/shipping

My 24" 1080p monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers later added ~$450.

As Stu said, you do have some fancy stuff, like the gaming keyboard, BOSE speakers and two monitors. That said, the most expensive parts of the tower stem from the Core i7 CPU. You may see some performance increase over Core 2 Quad, but pay about twice the price for the CPU/motherboard/RAM collectively.

For your last components, look at NCIX. THey ship out of Richmond, BC and have excellent prices, and weekly sales on a wide selection of components. You can get a GTX 460 for as little as $160 after rebate. As you saw from my PSU, you can get that for half the price as well.

Don't feel too bad though, man. As someone who has made A LOT of bad purchasing decisions, I can tell you that you'll only do it once...usually. :P

Edit: As an added point, if you bought one at FutureShop, you wouldn't have had the satisfaction of gaming on something you put together yourself. I love that feeling. :D

While I can't compile the map to test it, I know that with Source, you usually have to float item entities above the floor (say one grid marker), which I was trying to determine in the shoutbox.

in Func_movelinear Acting Strange Post #287483
After some attempts on my side, I've decided to scrap this idea. Aside from the fact that I still can't get this to work, the effect I've seen from what I can get working, isn't what I'm after.

On the working form, they NEVER stop. I've tried setting the trigger to 'open' and setposition 1, but no matter what, they don't stop. I've tried setting an OnFullyOpen Kill on the entity, setting the distance to 32 and 1 (in a vain train of thought on the .0625 ratio of the skybox), but they will not stop. At one point, I had them moving together for one build, but after trying the spinner, (which does cause them to act strange :quizzical: ), they refused to converge again.

On the effect front, this was planned as an orbital laser that was to destroy a building at the end of a map. The problem with them inside the map, is that I can't the main beam (to be fired after the three smaller ones merge) big or fast enough. In the skybox, they don't line up with the map properly. Always appearing outside the map, and not over the exact center. I may have to shudders model the blast.

I appreciate the help though guys. I did learn one thing from this...moving func_ entities seem to HATE being in a skybox.

I'm trying to create a unique laser effect in my skybox, with 3 lasers converging into one. To do this, I've got the env_beam and info_target pairs parented to func_movelinears, meant to move them together and stop. They do neither.

They all move in the same direction, despite being set differently, and just keep going and going. I've checked the parenting, names, angles, distances, everything I can think of to try to get these running right. What am I missing? :(

It did crash on a full cordon, and in multiple games (Dystopia, Episode 2, Counter Strike: Source).

However, remaking the displacement DID work. I was originally working with a displacement made with an old version of Twister (like to keep ones I've made so I don't have to make them again...I'm incredibly lazy). Turns out that was the problem. There was something wrong with the old displacement.

Thanks, RabidMonkey.

That's another weird part.

With Example 1 and the hallway in Example 2, there's nothing behind the displacement, and, when compiled without the dome in Example 2, they work fine. The same thing with the 5 piece in Example 3, there's nothing behind it, and it works.

The dome in Example 2 is sitting on top of a solid brush as well, so there is something behind it. I've also tried compiling the dome in Example 3 encased in nodraw brushes.

Here's the compile log for Example 3. What I did was corden off the map, so just the spawn room (the nodraw blob) and the room with the perfect dome compiles, and did it as close to it as possible. As far as I can see, there are no errors outside of the skybox one, which comes with any fully enclosed compile to my knowledge.

I've got a weird problem that thus far, I've been unable to figure out on my own. My maps keep crashing and it seems to be related to displacements made with Twister.

These are the .vmf files I've included as examples; one inner dome, one outer dome, and a working one.

Example 1: Working
User posted image
This map, anteroom_test, works properly. Doesn't crash. The displacement is on the bottom of the elevator shaft.

Example 2: Outer Broken
User posted image
I was trying to see if it was displacements in general here. The hallway works fine, but when you approach the dome, it crashes.

Example 3: Inner Broken
User posted image
This was the start of my problems. The room on the right has a roof made from 5 brushes turned into displacements and subdivided. The one on the left uses a single displacement. If I cordon right, I can teleport in there in game no problem. If I cordon left, when I hit the teleporter, the game crashes.

Thus far, I've been unable to figure out a way to fix the problem myself. I can't explain why most maps crash, while the on doesn't. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
