when you open a map, go to view -> go to coordinates, enter in "0 0 0" without quotes, and press enter.

alternatively, you can use the camera tool and place a camera near your map.

Grid is fine here too, Hammer 3.4, Windows XP, at 1680x1050.

Edit: Just realised this in the Source Forums, but the grid is still fine in latest Hammer 4.1.

that's messed up. you must have set it up wrong or something :x

i don't know the command line parameter, but it supposedly fixes the non-solid displacement problem. (i've never had it, so i don't know)

for a free alternative to Visual Studio, the best option is to use Code::Blocks (nightly build) with the latest version of MinGW, (which is the GCC compiler for windows).
Unfortunately you cannot use GCC to compile the Half-Life code, so you need to either get an old copy of VS6, or just set up CB to use its compiler.

As for the discussion on the engines, Source is based on the Half-Life code, but in reality the engine is completely different. Of course, some parts are very similar, seeing as they both use BSP technology, but they have modified it a lot, and almost everything else is new. There is no way you can say they are the same engine, just because they reused an efficient function here or there.

i think that:
Instead of temporarily buffing people's health to 50% above their normal maximum, it permanently boosts them to double their standard health.
will be changed to have slow/no uber and work like the medic gun now, except with a bigger buffer, so that the medic needs to be constantly charging to get double health.

oh, and
Oh wow! A mining themed map! Haven't seen that before. Boo.
you need to get over it. the entire game is that theme.

yes but it doesn't have to appear that way. if you set the rotating entity to move very fast, and make the outside of the timer flush with the numbers, it would just look like a digital watch timer.

i dont map for HL1 (source only), but this could be done with 4 rotating entities. each entity has ten sides and has the number 0-9 texture on each side. then the "second" wheel spins once a second, the "ten second" one every ten seconds, "minute" and "ten minute" the same.
