You'll just have to teleport the monsters in from another location to use the game_counter with them. Monsters made with monstermakers are pretty limited in their functionality, I don't think you can use them to target on death.

It probably confused so many people because crouch-sneaking and shift-walking weren't exactly advertised features of the game. They didn't even bother to cover them in the hazard course, for crying out loud. And at the time, the idea of monsters being able to "hear" was probably a little far-fetched.

Just add another 8 unit high step next to the 16 unit one and it'll look fine. I try not to get too caught up on annoying details like step height though, because in the end, absolute architectural realism in Goldsource is a losing battle. Besides, 80% of the players won't even notice stuff like that, and the rest won't care enough to make a difference.

Does anyone realize how revolutionary this is? This is the kind of thing that would be a major point of interest for a large scale commercial game, and Black Mesa is over here giving this shit away for free. No game to my knowledge has done this before, and it'll surely be "borrowed" by numerous other future games.

This isn't merely the point at which a mod can equal commercial levels of quality, it's the point at which they can surpass that.

Golly gee wiz, I had some pretty coarse opinions to get out in that thread. Maybe it's just me, but whenever I re-read my old posts like that they seem of much higher quality than they have been lately, and I can't even imagine typing half the stuff I did.

I always find it funny looking back that Penguinboy was ever capable of becoming viewed as a "head moderator". Back in the day, he was literally the farthest thing I could think of from being a leader of any type. He wasn't even picked for the job from what I remember, he just landed it circumstantially from being so heavily involved in TWHL3's development. That was one of the harder transitions for me, from talking to this random smart-ass on IRC, and then suddenly that smart-ass became a mod, and then one day he wasn't a smart-ass anymore. Damn. And now I have mad respec' for him.

By the way 2muchvideogames, I'm somewhat curious as to how you inadvertently stumbled across that thread in particular. I'm not suspicious or anything, it's just a remarkable coincidence you were able to pick up on so much in such a short time, especially considering how awful our current search function is when you actually want to find something like that. The fact that you came across the entire history of Kasperg and Rowleybob is, well, amazing.

in Problem With Pool Table Prefab Post #272185
This is why you don't download prefabs. Sometimes the people who make them never even bother to compile them, or else the brushwork somehow gets screwed up in the process of saving/compressing/downloading. Make your own brushwork and I promise you'll be much happier in the end.

in In Development - A Source mod Post #272184
It looks like you have a really solid foundation there. I really like your story overview in particular because it doesn't delve into absurdly intricate detail. Multi-paragraph mod descriptions bore me to death and make me wonder how they're going to transfer their mini-novel into a playable game.

Lucky for you mappers are so incredibly easy to find. There's actually an overabundance of them IMO. If you look around, it's probably the least available team position, since most mods are begun by mappers who know how to do little else. It's fortunate that you're a coder and you've got a modeler already, because those skills are NOT easy to come across.

Batman Begins 3
Holy shit Batman, you've had to restart three times!

Also, I am looking forward to the last season of Lost, but right now I'm more interested in them releasing the rest of the season 5 episodes online. I got into the series by power-watching seasons 1-4 over the span of three days on Netflix (yes I spent the entire time doing nothing else), so I haven't exactly been following it. They uploaded the last couple shows of the season to ABC but none of the first ones? That's craziness.

in Hammer isn't detecting my modfolder Post #271875
Sentences.txt doesn't require any linking or anything of the sort, it just goes in the mod's base sound folder ("firestorm/sound" in your case) and therefore, while you are playing the mod, it overrides the sentences.txt that exists in the PAK file. The way the Goldsource engine handles mods, it looks to see if the files exist in the mod directory first, and if it can't find them there it uses the default ones in the main game folder ("gearbox" or "valve" depending on the game you're modding for.)

As far as gameplay goes, it won't make any difference if you copied all those files into your mod directory or not. That's why if they're the exact same files that came out of the PAK, they're just wasting space and can be deleted.

I think I know where your troubles might be coming from though. I noticed you're mentioning PAKs instead of GCFs. That means you're still using WON Half-Life and Opposing Force. Back then, if I'm not mistaken, Opposing Force was technically treated as a mod, and occuppied its own mod folder within the Half-Life folder. This would explain the problems you're having, because in this case you would need all those files from the Opposing Force PAK to get the mod to work (Half-Life wouldn't know where to look for the default Op4 files.) I suggest upgrading to Steam, because it handles these things much more intelligently with each expansion pack getting its own game folder. Then again, I could be totally wrong about this, since I've never used WON Opposing Force.

in Hammer isn't detecting my modfolder Post #271867
It seems you might have some large misunderstandings about the way Hammer operates.

First of all, Hammer doesn't autodetect anything, especially not mod folders, so whatever it was doing, it was what you told it to do. Second of all, Hammer never looks for sentences.txt, that's not its job. Sentences.txt exists only to store the names and file locations of audio files so they can be quickly accessed by the game engine. When a character is told to speak something, the engine references sentences.txt so it immediately knows where to look. Hammer has nothing to do with this.

I'm also not entirely sure what you're trying to do with this mod. I sort of get the impression that this is an Opposing Force mod, but if you're simply trying to get Opposing Force content to work within Half-Life as a mod, that too is possible. For that though, you will require the entire contents of Opposing Force's PAK file to be extracted into your mod folder, because regular Half-Life doesn't contain that stuff. If it's just a mod for Opposing Force though, you won't need any of the redundant content you extracted from its PAK.

Oh, and by the way, if you permanently deleted your PAK file from the Gearbox folder, you're kinda screwed. That's the entirety of the game files right there.

in Pure Pwnage TV show in 2010 Post #271782
I don't know, it was kinda funny back when I was younger, when every kid in school didn't know what 1337 5p34k was. Used to be that the ultra nerds were the only ones who understood this stuff. Now you hear people imitating it everywhere, and it just sounds fucking retarded, which it really was all along, but it was actually humorous because of how lame it was. Now it's just ruined somehow.

And of course, they won't do anything too innovative, too inside-jokey, because they're a TV show, and that might exclude the mainstream audience, even though the whole point of the series was to exclude the mainstream audiences as much as possible. I'm sure it's this director's dream though, to finally get a spot on TV and make his breakthrough, and who can blame him? The series is probably going downhill by this point anyway, so it's probably a worthy sacrifice for enhancing this guy's career. How long can you feasibly produce a show featuring a loser who does nothing except play games all day?

Don't take that the wrong way though. It's not called selling out, it's just the natural progression of things. You can't live on Ramen in a dinky little apartment and hand out free internet shows forever.

Yeah, people complain about having their privacy invaded in public areas, how do you cope with getting changed in front of video cameras? It's like a perverts dream, legally spying on families every activity. Honestly, instead of benefiting these "problem families", wouldn't they predict stress levels and paranoia to go through the roof when they're being monitored 24/7?

Oh, and by the way, is this program voluntary or what? I don't think an involuntary program of this nature could really work out, it would be way too easy for non compliant families to simply tear the surveillance equipment out.

in Entities "echoes" on the rest Post #271431
I've never experienced or heard of this problem before, but if it isn't just something you're doing wrong (really hard to pinpoint with the grammar in your post), I guess I'd have to assume it's some glitch that sprang up in Hammer, and I might suggest reinstalling it. You are using the latest version, 3.4/3.5, right?

Is it just the name of the entity you can't get to change, or is it any value in any entity? This really just sounds like a common user error more than anything, but your post doesn't give me enough detail to work with. You haven't even said if the problem is recent, or if it's always been like this. If I knew how long you had been mapping, I might also be able to rule out a simple judgment error as the cause, but right now that seems likely.
