Another thing: most rail tracks rest on broken up rock rather than just grass. I believe one of the HL2 textures has a blend texture made up of gravel and grass that you could use.

Uhh, guys:
Aside from that restriction, we're leaving it fairly open: it could be historical in a video game context, a world event context or heck, even an alternate history (provided you actually have a fantastic backstory: don't take this as an excuse to flimsily work in a map you've already done). We're definitely looking for creativity and originality here, so crack open those history books and get mapping!

Rightio, Competition 29: Map Something Historical is a go. Details are on the page. All whinging about the topic of the compo goes here where it will be promptly ignored by your friendly Admin team!

I'm posting the requirements for the compo in this thread, along with a FAQ.

Rules and Requirements
  • You may use any custom textures, sounds, and models that you wish, but absolutely no custom coding.
  • Your entries may be made for Half-Life, Half-Life: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, or Portal to be accepted. If you have a game in mind that isn't listed here, please contact the judges before entering. Please keep in mind that any exceptions to the list will only be for GoldSource and Source powered games that are directly connected to Valve's titles.
  • You must include a readme mentioning your TWHL username and what game your entry has been made for.
  • Your entry can be either single or multi-player.
  • Your entry must NOT be in mod format. If you have custom content, the content should be zipped in the appropriate folder structure.
  • Goldsource and Source entries will be judged separately.
  • All entries must be in ZIP or RAR format. Do not upload just the .BSP file.
  • For entries over 1MB, you will need to host the file externally and paste the link into the appropriate field when entering.
  • It MUST run without error: no excuses! We will not chase authors. If we do, it just slows down the already slow process of putting up results.
FAQs

Day of Defeat: yay or nay?
I will discuss this with Penguinboy, but I'm going with a tentative 'yay'.

Pb also says 'yay'.

I need to put this into a mod format!
I'm going to discuss this with the other admins and see if we might change that rule for this and future competitions. It may make things neater, particularly for anyone submitting a Source entry.

in A few questions Post #287198
1. Add in more info_player_deathmatch entities to your map.

2. You can put a trigger_hurt a unit above the water and set the damage to a negative amount, which will heal the player instead of hurting. Trigger_hurt is a brush-based entity, like func_water, so create a brush textured with null and turn it into a trigger_hurt.

3. Not off the top of my head, but there are places that do textures. You'd have to turn them into Half-Life .wad files yourself, which someone else may have to help out with because I don't remember how. Perhaps someone would like to write a tutorial on the subject?

in Skybox Crash Post #287094
Creating a box and hollowing it is the worst way to skybox a map, purely because it adds extra strain on the engine. Think of it this way: rather than just your map being compiled and rendered, the engine also renders all those gaps under and around your map because it's simply contained in a box.

Think of a skybox as putting a cap, or a roof over your entire map, rather than boxing it. As well as that, did you texture the box with the sky texture?

There is a good chance of that. Backup them up before you do. Or just try reinstalling Steam over the top of the existing installation, it shouldn't wipe out your games.

in Mapping for Half-Life: Source Post #286856
Half-Life: Source is pretty much just a mod for Source. There's nothing special about it whatsoever. More so, I don't think it's been updated since it's release, so it's still running on ancient Source.

in phpbb style editing Post #286281
Don Punch: I can't give you anything specific related to PHPBB having never developed for it myself, but I can point you in the direction of FireBug, an add-on for FireFox. It is quite possibly the best web development tool around (and as a long-time Opera user, that's a big thing for me to say!).

What you'll be able to do with FireBug is first of all see what stylesheets are in use by the page in question. As well as that, you'll be able to directly 'select' the element you want to change and FireBug will spit out what styles are affecting it. This should help you narrow down exactly what you need to change to get it working. As well as that, FireBug allows you to edit the stylesheet directly without touching the online version, so you can see your changes instantly without screwing around with the live version.

Yes, I know this seems like an ad for FireBug, but it's free and it's definitely helped me out in my job.

Luke and Crollo: This is General Discussion so the post is valid. If you aren't going to help, don't post.

in Onlive Post #286147
OnLive's initial announcement didn't really interest me. It seemed steeped in DRM: you're essentially renting the games. If OnLive goes belly-up, there's absolutely no way to claim ownership of games, since you never really had them to start with. This, combined with the system requirement of having lightspeed Internet (something that few people have access to at the moment, particularly in countries other than the US) means that you have to run the games at a crippled resolution.

Secondly, I'm sure that any pro-gamer out there would balk at the idea that they're essentially just playing a video. The lag issues involved with precision gaming would be insane.

I'll stick to Steam, GoG (even after their stupid stunt) and good old fashioned retail, thanks: I'd like to have an actual product after I've forked over cash.
