Guys, use
[simg][/simg]
for thumbnails. It removes the [Open in new window] link.

This month's Win-wallpaper goes to Luke and RotatorSplint. Luke fails on account of small resolution, though. And RotatorSplint fails on account of Windows Media Player. Thanks for playing.

No offence, but that was pretty stupid.

BUYING a spyware cleaner in the first place? And the fact that you couldn't even see it was fake? :P

For future reference, never use anything but Spybot S&D or AdAware, both free.

Not a bug, but a suggestion:
the quote bb looks horrible. The margin is too big, the border is ugly (dashed and ulgy colour), same background as background. I'd make it look more like old-TWHL quote boxes.

The difference between a regular optical mouse and a laser mouse is the light used to track movement. A regular optical mouse uses an LED light in the optical engine, while a laser mouse uses a laser to track movement. The more dots per inch (dpi) a mouse can track, the more sensitive and accurate it is. A typical optical mouse tracks between 400dpi and 800dpi, while laser mice track more than 2,000dpi.

Neither is really better; it all depends on your needs and preferences. Unless you're a gamer or a graphic artist with a need for precise movement, you'll probably find a 2,000dpi laser mouse too sensitive. Many gaming mice, however, allow you to switch sensitivity levels so that you have precision when you need it but can revert to 400dpi or 800dpi for regular mousing.

Besides their tracking speeds, laser mice work on nearly every surface, whereas optical mice may experience trouble tracking on black or shiny surfaces.
tl;dr they're basically the same only laser is expensive. :)

Optical mouses (it's not mice when it's not an animal, damn it) don't have any problems with black surfaces, btw. Majority steelpad mousepads are black, I doubt they'd go for that if that were the case. Shiny surfaces, though, they do have a problem with.

The difference between laser and optical is hardly noticeable. Different levels of DPI on a mouse are hardly noticeable either.

I have a cheap MX510 Optical with a Steelpad, best mouse I've ever had. Solid, precise, durable, cheap.

in BioShock vs. CoD4 Post #245904
But at the hardened and veteran skill levels it's just.. guh, not worth spending time on.
I did that and it really ruined it for me.

There are lots of moments where enemies will constantly attack until you push through and it gets very tiresome. The village level where you need to push your way down hill from the barn is one example, horrible experience that.
Meh. I played it through on Hardened first time round and I really loved the entire game. It's true though, that endlessly respawning enemies are tiresome at times. Still, it forces you to constantly move forward, which is what the developers intended.

I haven't played BioShock (shitty graphics card) so I can't pass judgement on it... but CoD 4 is awesome. The multiplayer is... unprecedented win.

You can't decompile Gold-Source maps in a recompilable form - they end up all fucked up and ruined (all blocks are hollow, for instance). You'd have to reconstruct the areas manually.

However, there's probably some mod that will let you modify the entities of existing maps. I know there's RipEnt which lets you modify entity stuff live in-game. Try something like that.

Flash based thumbnails, so when you click on it, a popup in flash comes up with a larger image. I can help you, the effect can be seen on some flash based website and newgrounds.com
(I can only help you, but not work for you, too busy with my own job)
Very retarded. JS would do the job better (Lightbox, anyone?). I don't think there's a single non-fully-flash site in existance that uses FLASH as an image viewer. It's very unpractical.
Besides, animated popups of any kind are annoying, that includes JS Lightbox stuff. Better suited for a photographer's portfolio, not a mapping website.

R1Co answered it promptly. It's pretty hard to tell though, since scientists at computer development centers in the military were developing small games on oscillioscopes and whatnot long before the 70's.

Besides, Pong wasn't the first electronic game, it was the first home video console. There were arcades and shit before it.

How about some 4chan functionality? I know, a lot of people are royally sick of 4chan and its memes, but some functions taken from it might be good for lulz functionality on the forum.

If not a "(USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)" caption, how about "(THREAD WAS CLOSED BECAUSE OF THIS POST" or similar? Might be useful for future posts, and as Strider has discovered, it'd have been a good tool for the "Weapon Game" thread.

Wordfilters. EVERYONE LOVES THEM.
Ok, seriously though, they provide great lulz. According to me. I leave it up to the the mods, but wordfiltering "twhl" to "vagina-hole" would be hilarious, if you ask me.

As Tetsu0 tried (and failed... > means greater than) to say low refresh rates can have weird effects on some people. Some find it unbearable. Check what refresh rate your desktop settings are at and/or what BSPViewer runs at. Max them both out.

No, but really, it has all compile errors you could possibly want for GoldSrc, I don't see why we need an additional guide.

in Anyone know a good decompiler? Post #243907
There's no perfect decompiler for GoldSrc. They'll always be full of errors and not recompilable, which is maybe for the better, because you shouldn't recompile other peoples' maps. Decompiling for instructional purposes is fine - taking a section of a map and putting it in your own is not.

BSPtwoMap is the best decompiler available, to my knowledge.

in Changing tempdecal.wad Post #243815
I remember having a custom spray in steam-CS some time ago. It's a bit of a bother though... the game has a habit of reverting to the default .wad every once in a while.

Replace tempdecal.wad with your own, start the game and try the spray. Don't touch any settings with the spray, or it'll probably be reverted.

The logo texture has to be named {LOGO, afaik, and has to be the only texture in tempdecal.wad.

in Storytelling in mods Post #243233
In most action games, the storytelling is shit, unless a lot of work has been put into it - eg. HL2. In these games, unskippable cutscenes paired with crappy voice-acting is a real mood-killer.

In other games like RPG's, I'm fine with lengthy cutscenes with zero player control. Think FFVII. I loved the story, I felt for the characters... even though the plot is cheezy as hell and most of the dialogue sounds like it's straight out of some crappy dōjin. It was still compelling.

So yeah, really depends on the type of game you're trying to sell to the player. If the entire game relies entirely on good action sequences and the developers haven't really much effort on the story, cutscenes are gonna be a bitch.
