To anybody decent at texturing, would you be interested in hosting some simple texturing challenges? Would be fun and informative for people who are stuck on the standard textures!

Maybe even a steadily more complex base map that have to make textures for, or even just single textures like a specific type of door, or scrolling or whatever. Maybe throw skies in too...

in Door with multiple closing times Post #241694
I think so, seems pretty simple if i understand what you want:

1. 1st func_door have it only open once. the button for the door triggers a multimanager that also triggers door number 2 (after 10 seconds).

2. Door number 2 will have to start in the open position, obviously, otherwise you wouldn't be able to get through during the first sequence. The only problem now is that the door #2's resting position will be open, which is no good. this is where i'm not sure what to do, but I can speculate:

-use a triggerable brush to bork the door's sequence so it in effect "resets" the resting state to closed?

-make the door a train, and use black magic to make it do your bidding??

-use another multimanager to trigger the door somehow??

-trigger_relay?? (reaching pretty hard now)

I'm sure there's a really simple way to do this, we just have to figure out how. = )

in What this error mean Post #241619
We just discussed causes and fixes for this this error, here:

http://twhl.co.za/forums.php?pgt=1&action=viewthread&id=14831&pg=1

And one more thing about "leaf saw" errors that I just encountered. Sometimes rotating groups of complicated objects that have no problems whatsoever will create loads of these. (whether you ctrl-m, shift-rotate, or just plain rotate)

If someone knows how to fix this, please let me know!

edit: Found running the -full switch eliminated all the "leaf-saw" errors caused by rotating the multiple complex objects! Tetsu0 mentioned it here or the other "leaf-saw" error thread so thanks to him!

When you search an item and it's hidden somewhere in a 100-page thread, might there be a way for the search results to let you know what page it's on, or take you to that page?

Sorry if it's been mentioned or if there is already a way to do this.

Sometimes too the brush(s) at the coordinates mentioned has nothing to do with where the problem actually is. A singe bad solid can cause other perfectly good geometry to yield various compile errors and disappearing faces.

Sometimes there is nothing wrong with the brush at all and simply deleting it, compiling, and undeleting the object will eliminate the error.

If you have a whole area of complicated stuff, try cutting the whole section out and save to clipboard/another map/prefab, compile and then paste the section back in and recompile. If you still get the error than you have to keep hunting ; )

Like Tetsu0 said, compiling with fast VIS will cause of bunch of these too, and they'll disappear when you run normal VIS.

Sorry if this is too wordy, hope it makes sense! = )

Clipping is fine in general, but I only use it for on-vertex, straight cuts. Slicing up cubes at odd angles is a great way to get invalid solids.

Another way to make complicated shapes is to use objects made only out of "triangles" (as many people say), or 4-sided geometry only. You can use 2 of these together to make a pyramid, 3 to make a wedge, and 4 to make a cube.

Objects like these can be VM'd in almost any reasonalbe direction and NEVER yield an "invalid solid" error. You can rotate, scale, pretty much do whatever with them. It only becomes tricky when ur working with lots of these at once and it's sometimes difficult to select or see the vertices you
want to move around.

Start out with a simple spike and experiment! I can post an example if u need...

Habboi (and others): compressing your pictures 50% decreases the filesize to less than a 10th of it's original size, with no discernable loss in quality. you could even go lower if you wanted without any noticeable pixelation... I'm just sayin'...

I kno you fixed your problem, but could you answer
a couple questions please?

What is this engine view you speak of? I never heard of patches
but I think I've seen them spoken of in the compile report... Is there
a nice description of what these things mean anyone?
And btw for anyone interested, some things I've noticed concerning
compile times:

-layouts/designs that allow the player to see to much stuff at once makes your VIS take for friggin' ever, not to mention give you poor r_speeds/frame rates.

-As previously stated, texture scales are a huge impact on compile times. Do a really simple test map and set the texture scales really low, and u'll see what I mean.

-If you can't avoid those previous 2 problems, try using fast VIS until your final compile time. downside is this increases your RAD times I think. I always use fast VIS until the end...

-Last one I can think of is bad brush or brushes, and errors in general. It sounds obvious but check for errors before and the compile log after to make sure some stupid error isn't screwing with your compile.

It works. All I did:

-changed mm values from 0 and 5 to .1 and 5.1--someone once told me mm don't like whole numbers fsr.

-because there were missing textures, I selected the whole map and changed the textures to one standard one, and scaled them all to 2.0--you had some textures scaled to .15 which is never good to scale them so small. I don't know if this had any relevance to the problem, but I was having trouble compiling.

That's it. Both game texts worked on que.

I had a problem with multiple trigger_cameras before, where even after the camera turned "off" the next camera wouldn't turn on until I somehow reset the previous one. I think all I did was put trigger multiples one before and after the camera, so when you ran by it would turn it on and off after you stepped on the second one. You could do it with a MM maybe. it would be easy to try.

are you able to trigger the first game_text multiple times with the mm?

My memory of MM and game_text are foggy, but try after you trigger the first game_text on, can you trigger it off before triggering the second one. I can't remember but maybe you have to use a trigger_relay to do this?

Also, a question. When I started building my level I was wondering if it would be ok if we can put doors at the stairwells.

One more. Can we add minor additional connections from one area to another, like a fire escape or duct or piles of boxes? It's not really changing the layout but it kinda is... If these have been addressed already I make sorries.

As if being a good mapper is such an amazing accomplishment anyway; I'm pretty sure 99% of the people I know don't even know what mapping is, lol.

When you try to explain it to them, they still don't understand what it is, and they always ask if you can make money at it! = )
