lol, err, well, since they were mostly stolen... no :)

Djinn: I'm going to try alternative colours... but it's not using any smart template system or anything, so changing the actual layout of the pages would be a mission. Give me colour suggestions though :)

5th July 02 was when it started. Must have gone online on the 9th, when I registered. Can hardly even remember those days... :)

But yeah, there was a previous incarnation, but it was not so much mapping as much as just a general (ugly!) fan site, but it became more and more mapping-orientated, until it needed a new home. I learnt HTML with the original, and PHP with this version :)

in Internal Server Error? (+ Suggestions) Post #1432
err... i guess you could say it's bad. doesn't seem to be anything wrong, so maybe it was a once-off. still happening for you?

suggestions... cool!
  • Editing posts: okay. I'll do that when I get round to the admin bits.
  • Avatars: I wrote that in this afternoon, but I can only upload it when I've finished the quote bbcode... tomorrow hopefully.
  • Smilies: there are 20-odd more - just got to list them somewhere... tomorrow again.
  • Posticons: yep, I'll work out the read/unread system, then find / draw some icons (for other stuff too).
  • Private messaging: cool idea... I guess TWHL's community is large enough now to make that worth-while. I'll look into it as a separate thing (i.e. not necessarily very soon).
  • Custom titles: arg, I deliberately dropped that from the design :)
Everyone else feel free to comment on this stuff and throw your own ideas in!

Ah, forgot about the trophy. Found a neat way to give it to him :) I'm might set up a 'team' system as was suggested a while ago.

Pretty good timing, I have to say. They don't do that for me, but I reckon it has something to do with the 10 second compile times (as opposed to 10 milliseconds, which would be more acceptable). Your ISP might be closing the connection after less than that.

But fear not, for I'm working hard on the new forums, which will rock, and should arrive (in at least functional form) in a couple of days.

phpBB is cool... but... do you really want to have separate accounts for the forums? And have to log-in separately? etc. Nah!

I'm not planning to use phpBB, just its style of threading (i.e. a topic, with replies all in one thread, readable on one page).

You don't mean the edge of the site, by any chance? :)

popups: You sure you don't want them, even just for making a new post (quicker to load on 56K)? I could always make it optional - that's another thing - I hope to create more member-specific options, like preferred number of posts per page etc.

images: okey-doke.

reply box: sure. what do you mean, 'properly threaded'? These are as threaded as you get! But it's not useful threading in TWHL's case, so yeah, the new ones will be phpBB-style.

use [ i ] nick [ /i ] (again, no spaces). What, I didn't know there was bbcode, I hear you say. Well, that's about all there is :)

Vassy: These are still the old forums. :) New ones are around the corner.

I'm redesigning the forums. Here's a basic list of what I hope to include with the redesign:

bbcode, much faster loading, better notification of new posts, read posts etc., non-hierarchical view, full thread displayed on one page. So basically, classic forum style.

Should I use continue to use popups for the New Post / Reply to Post forms, or make it all non-popup? Viewing posts will NOT be popup-based.

Any other ideas are very very welcome - reply!

The tut-specific forums were originally for both, but they tend to get used for questions / ideas. But comments aren't really useful, since by the time you see them, you've read the tut (unlike with the MV, for example). But people can still e-mail you with comments (maybe I should make that more obvious).

Having the forums threaded has it's disadvantages. I think maybe they outweight the advantages.

If it doesn't work, it's your browser's fault :) You could alternatively type [ quote ] the quote [ /quote ] (without the spaces).

Yep, TWHL will have HL1 tuts forever! There's an easy way to add new sections for tuts, so that's what we'll do when HL2 arrives.

Of course! Providing the game ever arrives.

In August we averaged just over 2 registrations a day (that's up from about 1 a day for a June / July, and 0.2 before then).

And we got 5 today :)

I've decided it'd be just too friggin' hard to use phpBB. Getting it to work with the same userbase would take yonks. I'm sure members don't want to have to register a separate account on the forums, login separately, etc. etc.

So instead I'm going to redesign these, dumping the threaded view, making them a lot faster and cooler.... and they'll come with bbcode and autolinking.

We did make a start on the TFC / CS entities but eventually decided it wasn't worth the effort, partly because collective.valve-erc.com had got started on its own entity guide system, which had the potential to be much better maintained (okay, so it hasn't got very far yet...).

If you go to cariad.co.za/twhl/entitycats.php?game=2, you'll see the CS entities with no info. Cool, eh?

I know how you feel...

The method I use is to save pages as MHT format (IE), because that makes everything one file, which is neat.

There's also the 'printable' link on each tutorial.

I'll see what I can do as far as making saving tuts easier and quicker.

Funny you should suggest that - it was the plan for the previous contest, but I didn't get round to it. All the contests could have their own read-only MV categories, with entries going into them automatically.

Will give this some thought and might implement it soon. Thanks for bringing it up :)

You're supposed to follow the line, and at some point it will go through the leak. But, uh, it's might be easier just to back-track through recently-added bits to find the offending join.

in Monster_generic Post #471
The monster_generic is just there for using models that don't need to do anything special.

They can't attack you or do anything exciting, because there's no special code associated with generic models.

You should be able to change the scientists by making Body be 1,2,3 or 4. -1 should make the heads random. Tell me if this works, because I can't be bothered to try it :)

in A bunch of random questions Post #474
1. As pepper says, it will work, but it's obviously not a good idea to distribute the WAD or even single textures with maps. Remeber to include the new WAD in Hammer setup.

2. You'll need to be good at programming C++ I reckon :)

3. Hmmm. Try triggering an ambient_generic and get it to say one of the WAVs from the PAK (and use it instead of a locked sound or whatever).
