Though I haven't given up on this, no matter how much time I put into it I seem to be making very little progress... meh! I guess this is what you call Mapper's block?!

It's even more discouraging, considering how fast I crapped out the first version. To prove I'm still working on it:

User posted image

Still generic textures, and the map is bare of most all props. I'm working on snow speeder textures now, but it's harder than I thought...

Try it!

I know I don't need much time to finish this, I just need something to push me to get my momentum going again. Any layout suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

(I realize the speeder in the middle is not "connected" to the elevator. The elevator will probably be scrapped in the final version anyway)

Firefox won't let me "save as webpage" this thread. It saves the files mind you, but not the .htm file.

It seems to be this thread only, because other threads work ok.

It works ok in IE.

Thoughts anyone?

I'd host mine, but I don't have near-enough hosting. We need a big, sekrit filespace to upload too, the location available only via PM :)

(It wasn't my intention to sound ungrateful about the book, I just thought it was the Heinlen one ;) )

Oes! I was thinking you meant Star Beast was 10-times better! I've read the book--Troopers--many times, and I concur ureservedly! (I know that book so well, I can read it in half a day or so!)

Thanks for the giftbook!!1 :)

edit: That book is Cell by Stephen King! (I actually just read that one recently--the hardcover was 50% off!)

@Tetsu0: I'll send you a gmail invite if you want. You get 100mb of hassle-free web hosting with a gmail account--god that sounds like a commercial! :P PM if interested.

I think it's a neat idea, and challenging, if for no other reason than water can be kinda buggy. (I'm guessing keeping your water to simple shapes helps with this?) If anyone who's had a lot of experience with the woes of water, please submit a mini guideline in mapping tips or something to help us water nubs! :P

My only complaint would be is the inordinately long time span. I people actually utilized all that time it'd be one thing, but I think most people just spend more time procrastinating with longer time allotments :

Anyway, I'm In! :)

...get Star Beast
Upon your recommendation, I will, though I don't see how it's possible for anything to be "10 times better" than Starship Troopers! :P (I've been meaning to read more Heinlein, I just never seem to get around to it)

Another option is to get the text for the book you want, and make a text-to-speech mp3. It's hard to listen to at first, but you get used to the speech engine's "voice" pretty quickly.

I'm listening to Watch On The Rhine by John Ringo right now :) (I used Ultra Hal Text-to-Speech to convert it, but there are tons of 'em out there.)

Cant wait Muzza! :)

K, compo 9 update. a is going to be submitting an entry soon--sunday I think. As soon as his entry is in I'll judge and post results. If you have an unfinished entry or whatever--CABOOSE--, SUBMIT IT SOON!!1~ :)

I have a simple prefab compo set up for #10; that is of course, unless the winner of the kitchen compo has a decent idea and wants to run the next one.

I have a couple i've converted to mp3, but I don't do it too often because It takes up too much time.

Like Orph said, there are lots of variables concerning size, namely how long the book is, and what bitrate you plan on saving the mp3s or whatever at. I just recently did Starship Troopers, and at 9 discs and at a 128k bit rate, it turned out to be about 60MB per CD, or almost 550MB.

Imo, your best friend for audio books is the public library. Whatever they don't have at their branch, they will be more than happy to search around the country at other branches 'till they find it for you.

I live in upstate NY, and my last book I requested, they borrowed it from Chicago Public Library!!1 (Apparently, of all the libraries in NYS, they didn't have the audio book I wanted, if you can believe that!?)

kk! If you plan on joining the kitchen compo, I'll extend it for a while--it's supposed to stay open 'till we get 5 entries, but it's been a while and I didn't think we'd get more! Because of that, I was planning on closing it in a day or so.

However, I'm willing to keep it open for another week if you think you can get an entry in by then! :)

in Advanced Brushwork Mini-Compos Post #210377
I've decided, yet again, to try to keep the brushwork minicompos going, with some new small changes, rather than changing to general mapping ones.

Rule changes:

-The compo will still end when at least 5 entries are recieved, but they'll too end after a predetermined amount of time--say something between 1 and 2 weeks. (I guess only one rule change lol.)

Also, I plan on making the subsequent compos even more specific and simpler, so if you wanted, you coulld generate a nice entry in a matter of a few hours--rather than a few days. The good side of this, is that it will make it easier for people with time restraints to enter. The bad news is, it will kinda reduce these mini contests to prefab/prop rather than mapping compos.

Your thoughts?

If you have an entry for the current compo--caboose--, I suggest you submit it now if you are ever going to... I'm closing this one in a day or so, and starting compo 10 ;)

Concrete has strength with weight shooting straight down on it, but not as a thin support structure like that cocked at an angle--even reinforced, it would barely hold itself up, let alone the ceiling!

I think it looks cool too, just a tad unrealistic is all.

I Pretty much always make my source files available with a map, I'm not really sure why, I just do. I notice that most people don't though, and I wonder if I shouldn't too.

Besides the obvious that if you're worried that someone will steal a trade secret in your map, or if you don't wan't people to easily clone your work, are there other reasons for not including source files with your map?

Yeah, we sure have had some great submissions :)

Ideas to get more entrants:

-Give money/Prizes lawl :)
-Create multiple spam accounts to make them look more funner--and hence get more real guys to enter. ;)
-Maybe Advert on other mapping sites--I don't go to any others than TWHL, but I've heard other mapping forums exist? :)
Btw those glass cabinets took me a good hour to troubleshoot.
I have no doubt they did, being they're seperate doors and diffent sizes! You could also make the cabinet doors one func_door_rotating, and make the glass a {texture of some sort instead--transparent. It prolly wouldn't look as good, but would be easier :)

I always have trouble figuring the optimum place to put the origin for those rotating doors too.

I want to make a kitchen now!!1 :P

in MAX_MAP_CLIPNODES Fixes? Post #209949
it doesn't tell you how many clip nodes you've actually got, it only tells you you've got too many.
Running the -chart parameter for any of the compile stages will tell you what resources you've used and what you have left, including clipnodes for the BSP stage:
User posted image
Nice to see you btw DarkPhoenix68!!!! :)

@Sandurr: I've not had a problem with clipnodes yet... thankfully :) I concurr with Captain P though, upload the map to the Problem Section.

And don't be so quick to condemn the HL1 engine. Most of us here have been using it for a long time to map, and I would say very few of us--if any--have used it to it's full potential. It has limits sure, but is still quite powerful considering how old it is.

Put it in the Problem section and linkie.

I don't think this is your problem, but I always use Distort rather than Hologram, because the latter disappears after you get 5 feet away from it, while the other one still looks like a hologram, yet is visible from far away.

in How to block buying ? Post #209910
I think Steam includes the buyzones at the player's spawns automatically somehow.

There's got to be a way around it. Maybe make a box outside the actual map and put 2 buyzones in it--maybe that will fool the game into thinking the've been properly placed, and not make one at the spawns?
This post was made on a thread that has been deleted.

I understand the way you feel, but keep in mind why we do these compos, not for the token awards but to learn and above-all have fun! :P

I have a proposition regarding this. I'm planning on starting new minicompos on general mapping. At the time of the first general-mapping minicompo, I'll judge and remit awards to any entries we get--even if yours is the only one, but hopefully Caboose will get his in soon too.

ZombieLoffe: I see no reason why we can't keep the same layout--and even the title--for the new minicompos, that's assuming you've had time to keep working on it. Any Updates?
