There's one current one I know about in the Site Comments and Suggestions Forum. There isn't any set place for minicompos.

Anybody can make a minicompo by created a thread and listing the rules and conditions of it. It's completely unofficial. ;)

I never knew you could define an area of an ambient_generic with the aaa brush... how freaking cool!

So if the AAA trigger surface area defines where you can hear the sound, I'm guessing it makes the radius/play everywhere flags irrelevant?

in Lighting Air vents "TIPS?" Post #207477
For a darker, high-contrast vent:

Use small-sized textlights made pretty bright-->500 depending on how big you make the brush. This gives you a really-dark space with small, really-bright areas.

For a brighter, low contrast one:

Bigger-brused textlights with a lower brightness value. Gives more even, yet more bland/boring light.

If you're going for realism, there wouldn't be any lighting in the vent at all, and the only "natural" light you'd get would be through grates, or damage to the duct like it was crushes by something, bullet holes, or explosions. :)

in GoldSource Mapping Tips Post #207476
If you make big, wide-open complex maps, without func_walling overly werid structures, or having your textures scaled very small over a large area, you'll run into HUGE compile times.

So basically, if you map the right way, you shouldn't really run into huge compile times imo.

Take my dm_hothworld map-.rmf is included. There are 3 ATATs outside the hangar, in a big open area. They're pretty big, but I scaled the textures x4 to try to keep the compile down. Still, I found by not turning them into func_walls--they're fairly complex for VIS-, vis time streteches from 5 minutes to so long that I had to abort the compile because I wasn't willing to wait that long!! :P

Captain P: Make the first selection normally, and then you only have to hold CTRL down while you make the second selection box. Once the second selection box is in the 2D view, you can let go of CTRL and rescale the selection box at will--without "losing" your inital selection... Try it! ;)

It's nice to see you around btw :)

First very unfinished release of dm_hothworld.

I didn't want to release it at all in it's unfinished state, but I promised a Christmas release, so here it is :) Much Much more to add, and the more work I do on it, the more things I think to add!!

Anyway, a bunch of screens:

Still, I'm going to try for some sort of release by Christmas day or so.

Still if some people want it, I'll be happy to build one. Maybe we could make it an optional "map from base" minicompo? (or maybe not :))

They're brushwork compos. You sure could use some fancy entity setups to make you detailed brushwork look nice though :)

And yes I know the site is bad. What do you think if I use bigger text/different colors? I notice certain colors look better than others, like white text on a blue background looks great, whilst white on green looks quite horrid for some reason.

When ZL finishes the layout, I'm sure me editing the content will ease me into learning HTML, and then, no more imagemaps!!1 :)

K. So this is what i've been spending all my recent free time on, and why no recent Clarity updates:

If you like Star Wars, you're going to love this map, If you don't then less so. :) It's called DM_Hothworld btw. It features all the main areas found in the Hoth battle during Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Why I'm excited about this map:
?I protoyped the thing in only a few days
?It's turning out exactly the way I wanted to--which is rare :P
?The performance is WAY better than I thought it would be--without any crazy optimization.
?I finally--hopefully--have a place to use my Battlefront Turret!!

The map is mostly complete, all that's left is retexturing, fine detailing, some lighting tweaks, and a couple more big props to finish. Expect more screens and download soon.

The Results:

Let me preface by saying that imo all the entries were extraordinarily good. Any of the submissions would've made a worthy gold, but unfortunately--like "The Highlander"--, there can be only one! :(

Consequently, personal preference played a much larger role in this compo as otherwise would've. In their own right, all the maps are fine examples of excellent work. I was quite surprised how most of the maps were almost all identical in terms of general size and theme--most resembling or portraying a reinforced vault of some kind.

Some entries did not include the .rmf file as required by the rules. I did not deduct points for it this time, but let me make myself very clear:

Any entries not including the .rmf in the future will be automatically disqualified, period. I will not chase authors for the required content.
User posted image
The Vault - By Srry

The most realistic, intricate, and nicely detailed entry in my opinion. One of the few entries also to use a rotating structure, which I thought sure more people would have taken advantage of. The "host" map for the door a was also very nicely detailed.
User posted image
5-Stage Door - By Tetsu0

When I first played this entry, I was blown away by how nicely it was done, and dreaded the judging if all the entries would be so nice--and they were :P. Although admittedly unrealistic/campy, each door was well done in it's own right. Very nicely constructed, detaijled and a flawless sequence--backward and forward--, a well-deserving Second Place.
User posted image
Transit Tunnel Door - By Daubster

Arguably the most intricately setup map in terms of timing, effects, and entity setups. The map itself is also excellent, and if this compo weren't focusing on detailed brushwork, this map as a whole could've easily taken first place. Unfortunately, I thought the door itself in the map was a bit lackluster, and could have used something more.

Honourable Mention:
User posted image
"Door" - By Kinrah

One of the most unique entries in how the door itself works. The door disappears into a hole in the floor, and a nice little walkway covers the hole. The rest of the door is very nice as well, but had some flaws like under-detailed mechanisms and some brushwork errors that I simply could not ignore. Check it out!
User posted image
"You Failed" - By ZombieLoffe

The final entry, and I must say a very nice one at that. This entry is very similar to Daub's imo, making use of excellent sprite and beam effects, some intricate timing/setup, and probably also the best utilzer of sounds. Also one of the few entries to use a rotating mechanism, which was largely ignored as part of the toolset for this minicompo. This map also has a nice little ending that is sure to please.

So, that's it for Minicompo 8. In the future, please don't make you're entries so good, so it's easier for me to judge :P

New compo details very soon!!1 :)

(if you don't like how I scaled the awards for your profile page, Here are Rimrook's Originals Actually too, if someone wants to scale them professionally for a standard size we all could use--something similar in scale to the official TWHL ones--, pleas feel free :) )

Minicmopo 8 - Advanced Door is now CLOSED.

The entries Recieved:

?5-Stage Door - By Tetsu0
?"Door" - By Kinrah
?The Vault - BySrry
?Transit Tunnel Door - By Daubster
?"You Failed" - By ZombieLoffe

I'll redownload/play all the entries, and post up the results tonight.

For the next compo I have an idea ready, unless the winner of this one has a strong idea, and wants to run it.

Good work all of you! :)

I agree. ZL is making a new site as we speak. The image mapping is just a fun way that someone with absolutely no HTML knowledge can quickly prototype a page, imo.

It would look a little better if I used uncompressed jpegs and bigger text, but ultimately, it will still look like shit no matter what :P

Now go fuck off unless you have some useful cricticism!!1 :P

@Tetsu0: If we can't even get 5 people--five was a very low cap to put on it, or at least I thought so!--to enter the contest, then this minicompo really isn't worth my time, and I'd be content to let it die. :(

There's more than enough active memebers around to participate, although many of them don't seem to really map; or at least put stuff in the vault anyway.

So no end 'till we get one more entry--sorry--,and NO, you can't submit a second door, but I sincerly do appreciate your enthusiasm :P

Custom texturing=making the map, is a myth.
I suppose, but no maps blow me away like the ones with custom textures.

I suppose too it has to do with your lighting too. You can take a mono-textured map, and make it look cool with shadows--make the map really dark, with small, bright text lighting. In a map like that, the texturing becomes less important in a way.

Anyway, I'm not saying the HL textures are total crap--I use them ALL the time--, I'm just saying no matter how well there used, nothing captures you like crispy new ones! :)

Espen/FresheD: I respectfully disagree. If we never get a fith entry, it will never be judged... it's that simple. Besides, it's only been 12 days!!1

If you-all'd like to expedite the process, why not just submit an entry? :P

If you don't want to, or have some weak excuse why you can't, then I suggest you keep your Ps and Qs to your little selves! (OMG I'm joking with you don't spite PLZ!!1 )

Well, it's not a gigantic concept imo. Usaually I'm mapping something I'm famialiar with--something I know personally, or from a movie.

Whatever I'm "brushworking", I have a really good idea what I want it to look like, I just have no textures for it.

So, I pick something out of the Half-Life wad that looks close to what I want--or at least the color of what I want--, and presto: placeholder texture.

I will fully admit though that my texturing requires some serious improvement; it's probably my weakest mapping skill. I also recognize that maps with custom textures look thousands of times better than the beat-up 'ol HL ones... I'm just irrationally averse to making my own for the time being--hopefully not too much longer ;)

Well, I'm just going to reinstall WON and update the dlls for a backup--for HL1 anyway. I suppose after-all it's not the biggest deal, but it still pisses me off.

I'm also going to try Dave/Habboi's method sometime, so when I eventually install Source again, I'll have a backup.

Yeah I'm not doing any new texture work 'till the end. Here's the plan:

Stage 1:
Complete the architecture of the map and add weapons. Send to Muzz's to playtest.

Stage 2:Amend architecture/layout/bugs as necessary per feedback.

Stage 3: Dive into the world of custom textures and try going to town. If I can't texture it good enough myself, I'll hire someone or use existing textures from some other source.

Regarding NS Textures: I never thought they looked that great, but maybe I just played the wrong maps. If somone has a paticular map/texture set to recommend, I'll certainly check it out for inspiration. :)

This all said, I'm briefly--a week--putting a hold on this map's progress to work on my current Christmas map. There will be no teaser screens or hints for this map. I hope to fininsh it before Christ's birthday--it's about 30% done right now.
